Round 24 - Panthers vs. Broncos - Pre Match Discussion

It's a big test. To say a Round 23 game against the Panthers is a big test is also an indictment on our real finals prospects.

Our first real test without Hodges.

I'd love a Copley return will be hard to beat them with two second rowers in the backs.

We'll need to start seeing massive improvements in our defence or we are no chance of beating the Dogs or the Knights...possibly not even the Panthers.

remember in juniors when all the coach ever said was move up in defence? and all you did at training was move up in a line back and forth? well the broncos don't move up in defence, it's a bad influence on the children

It must rocket science at red hill

Is Copley back playing Q Cup? If so, how's he been going?

Panthers will be pretty confident after travelling to NZ and getting the points, hopefully the short turn around will work in our favour.

Only change I'd like to see would be Granville/Baptiste on for Wallace but that's unlikely to happen. Surely we can't be the only ones that notice how bad we go once Wallace comes in off the bench. My only thought is that Hook is concerned about Hunt's fitness and wants Wallace as a backup half.

Any news on Glenn? We could definitely do with him coming off the bench.

Baptiste dislocated his shoulder again on Sunday.
Copley isn't back playing yet.

This is a serious pressure game. Do we want to subject Granville to that?

Irrespective of what we think of Wallace, he has big match experience, and for mine, he didn't do too badly last week.

Who else is there anyway?

I also think Wal had a better game last week. I think Macca showed he has some great vision but he has to work on his passing. The slow service from dummy half from both Wal and Macca is still killing our attack. Anyone who has played halfback has had it drilled into them how many metres are lost for each error after the play the ball. A slow pass, poor accuracy, the receiving player having to slow their run, or put in extra effort to catch it due to it not landing right in their hands at the right time.

All these things eat away at the time we have to pull off an attacking play. Thats why DCE/Cronk look like they have 10 minutes to do as they please, while we are forced into doing one out hit ups.

Unless kahu and stagg practiced their defensive combinations a lot I don't see us winning. Their outside backs are class and our makeshift backline won't be able to stop them. Our forwards will need to dominate to get a win. I cant see us defending repeat sets.

And from memory that is the side Mansour is on and he is hard to contain at the best of times

Truly this is the defining game of our season. If the mettle is there then a win is possible. If we win ugly and have little continuity then we will only be celebrating another week alive. The time is now for a polished and professional performance, now is when we should be looking like premiership material otherwise it is just a false dawn in a season of mediocrity.
