POST GAME [Round 27, 2023] Broncos vs Storm

Madden has a long kick and good hang time .
Lots of wanna be halves don`t .
I think that once he starts backing himself more, becomes dominant and is given a bit of leeway for other plays he can definitely step up. From memory he has been denied a few tries, one against Cows that Walshy caught off and score from a Drinkwater hand most recently.
If he starts scoring tries, starts getting those plays right, like the short ball to Arthars, not the intercept long pass to Pereira, it will compliment his kicking game. So far he has been better with his kicking than Croft was, and if he can back himself for a few scything runs like Hunt, he will be a good half for us.
Sometimes these things take time. Ezra's a ball-runner, less a kicker, so we need a Madden type to compliment that.

Agreed. I was really impressed with most of Madden's few games in first grade this year. He wasn't perfect by any mean but there was a lot to like, especially his kicking. He was landing them on the spot more often than not, the rest can come with time. We are very lucky to have Reynolds for now but once he goes, if he can keep the core of this side together, all we really need is a halfback with a strong kicking game to compliment Walsh and Mam.

resting the majority of our side didn't just protect the team from injury, suspension of HIA stand-down ... but it also protected their confidence from taking a hit.

playing the Storm with both teams at full strength, only to lose then have to back up against them the following week ... would possibly dent our confidence. having our reserve grade teams go at it, wouldn't affect our confidence
Spot on. I'd almost call it a genius move from Kevvie, except there was no genius required, it was a deadset obvious move.

Im so 50/50 on this man.
Half of me agrees with you.
The other half thinks if we beat them, it would have a great impact on confidence going into the finals.
I think the Storm was the only team we didn't beat in the regular season.

I suppose we will have to wait and see if it was the right call or not from Kev.

I doubt you'd get confidence from beating up on a reserve grade side, knowing most of them wouldn't be there the following week anyway.

but there is also the other way to look at it as Kev protecting his star players from one of the grubbiest teams in the comp with literally nothing for them to lose. I wouldn't have put it past the Storm to use one of their reserve grade players to take out one of our key players (even if it costs them a couple of weeks on the side lines)

Im worried about this week for the same reason.
NAS on special assignment to destroy Reyno's knee.

I also think beating the Storm would bring confidence regardless of the side they fielded.
Just beating them after 8 years of losses would have an effect, as well as reclaiming Suncorp from them.

But the more i think on it, the more i think Kev did the right thing in terms of avoiding injuries, HIA's and suspensions.

Has it been announced anywhere about what X man's injury is?

Ankle, allegedly. Nothing official, just this:

It’s something I believe will be decided in retrospect by the fans. We win everything then it’s genius. We bow out early and the fans will want his blood.
I agree, the fans will decide in retrospect, but that doesn't make the fans right

It kind of does though.
If we win, the guys who said Kev was right to rest the team will be vindicated and the fans who said that were right.
The same applies if we lose.

Only time will tell.

Not really. We will never know (if players had not been rested) if anyone would have been injured and/or we would have still lost week 1 of the finals.

How we finish this year (and play against Melbourne), will be based on the thousands of decisions made throughout the year, not on the decision to rest players in round 27.

Except it doesn't. You can do everything right as a pro athlete/team and still not win.
Simply not winning a particular game or the premiership doesn't mean a particular decision was wrong.

That post is the best gift Santa has ever given anyone, ever.

It doesn't matter. Certain people will still point to specific grievances they have and blame specific losses on them.

Don't win this week? Kevvie shouldn't have rested so many players.

Win this week, but lose in a fortnight? Not enough recent gametime for the rested players, they were underdone.

Lose the grand final? It's Billy Walters' fault.
