Positive I take from that apart from the obvious win is that we wouldn't have won it last year.

Our fitness is right up there. It as allowed us to stay in the game last week and this week it got us over the line.

I think the easy win in round one probably wasn't what we needed. A tough lesson last week and a bit of a tough win this week gives you something to build on.

Madge is now getting an idea. It's hard to get if you flog a team. I have faith we will get better. There has been changes around the park and apart from game one they are just not in sink yet with each other.

Walsh is struggling but he has some solid leaders around him that can help. He will get it back because unlike Milf he appears to have some work ethic. He made the first tackle on Tomololo and then another good one few seconds after to start the game.

Onto something really positive, boy does Madge know how to get the best of Payne.
i thought Madge used the bench well tonight. Like you say he is learning...i like that he seems to adapt on the run to an extent

I don’t think it’s the same. His role has been minimised to nothing. He just isn’t suiting what’s being given to him. He isn’t the bloke that’s gonna run the ball 25 times and get 250 metres. Put him on an edge running shape. Use the **** as a decoy for all I care he isn’t being used right and a lot of it is the clear lack of cohesion coming from Reynolds and Hunt. It just hasn’t worked the last 2 weeks. I think Ezra’s stocks are rising by the week because if anything has been obvious the past couple years he unlocks Walsh very well.
They feed off each other. Hence they both had poor years last year. But when they are on they are on.

We just have to give the new combos time. Personally I think Walsh hasn't found his new thing yet. He was great running outside shape, but once the Panthers showed crunching in on him last year broke his game down, everyone started doing it.

He copped a head to the face and a knockout with this tactic. This has effected him and makes him second think his motion into contact. It doesn't surprise me as I bet a lovely nurse or Dr told him he was lucky he wasn't killed after Origin. It's a tough thing to find out your mortal as a young bloke with children, playing a high speed contact game. One inch and he could have been like Ackerman.

Like I said I think he just hasn't found the thing that will break games open for him. I think like others are saying he needs to be sniffing around Hass and Patrick for offloads. He should have been there for Shibs.

He is still adding enough quality to know he is trying and that's good enough for me right now.

Winning ugly is a big part of any season.
We will improve when Ezra is back and Hunt goes to 9.
Plus our draw couldn't be much better.
Lots to look forward to

Spot on.
I rewatched every try from 2023 the other day and the amount of tries that went from Reyno to Ezra to Reece was huge.
Ez and Reece have that connection that Hunt and Reece don’t seem to yet.
Its not just the connection with Hunt.
On that side he's got Shiba and Jetski which he's got to build the connection with as well.
A different hooker as previous years can also throw off the timing of everything.

I thought Gehamat was good tonight and whilst I won’t be mad if he gets picked over Deine, I think it is worth mentioning that Deine was definitely hampered by an injury of sorts this evening, at the game off the ball the entire game his body language was strugglestreet.

This is bang on i reckon.

Also its round three.

We have the players, the coach and the talent to make the finals.
We still have Maam and Staggs to come back. Immense talent across the park from Payne and Patty to Hunt, Reyno, Maam and Reece.

I dont see how a side this stacked can fail once they click.
Top 4 without a doubt.

Brandy is the shittest caller and is the reason for the heat on Walsh tonight. Twice Arthars dropped the ball and he called that it was Walsh. Laughable. I agree, Walsh was rocks and diamonds but i actually think he was the reason we won. The 40/20 was elite and the cut out pass was pure class.
Agreed, we scored 26 points tonight and Walsh was responsible for 12 of them. That 40/20 completely turned momentum. It was such a big swing that it could be argued he contributed to 18 of our 26.

The fact he also fucked up about 5 times should detract from this. 2 of those 5 were from his teammates contributing as well.

Ps, I’m guessing the fuckup numbers.

I do have to say that Hunt and Reynolds just aren’t working together. Thankfully hasn’t detracted necessarily there individual abilities (a little bit Hunt but definitely not Reyno) but they just aren’t unlocking the players outside them the same way Reyno and Mam combination did.

Hunt just can’t be used as a 6 in this team. He is using way to much ball playing craft, with under balls rather than just pinning the ears back, straightening up and taking time away from the defenders. Makes Reece quite flat footed and also takes time away from him. In fairness he has really unlocked Arthars in a way I don’t think Mam is capable of but currently Mam is the more complimentary option to the team and Hunt would be the best 9 by a country mile.

Here we go:

1. Walsh - Rocks and diamonds but thankfully not as bad as last week. He clearly has issues but the commitment in defense was clear tonight. There were signs some things might be starting to click but other signs he needs a break to freshen up mentally. He unfortunately kept getting in the way in attack but that 40/20 was amazing - 3
2. Cobbo - Struggled early and looked to perhaps pick up an injury because he didn’t look to be moving that freely but then went to fullback on kick returns and was Inglis-like. I hope Maguire persists with this in game change from time to time because Cobbo with space to run is destruction itself - 7
3. Mariner - He is so silky and is getting better and better. When he has space, he is tough to stop. I noticed him and Cobbo swapped quite a bit in attack and defense and I liked it, keeps the opposition guessing. Not as destructive as last week but still good and I have no idea how he didn’t drop that Walsh hospital pass - 6
4. Shibasaki - I’m loving this second coming of the bloke. He is so calm under pressure and does not shirk the tough run out of yardage. How he got that ball back out of the in goal I’ll never know but what a run. He’s making it very hard for Maguire to drop him in favour of Mariner and Staggs, really impressive - 9
5. Arthars - Not quite as silky as the first two rounds but still very good. He did technically drop the ball for the Cows first try but there really harsh. He is just generally so solid and has some very good wheels to get between defenders. Very underrated outside the club - 7
6. Hunt - He seems to be struggling a bit adapting to being sometimes second or third fiddle but the class is obvious and he never gives up on any play. Round 1 showed how it will be when the spine clicks, we just need to be patient - 6
7. Reynolds - Very kick happy tonight but mostly, rightly so and if not for a couple of weird ball bounces, could have had more try assists. He really took ownership tonight, very good game - 8
8. Carrigan - What a treat to have our front row. 198m and 28 tackles without a miss. Our middle really stood up tonight. The Cows were not going through there this evening and that was the most pleasing thing on the goal line. Carrigan is amazing and while Haas will understandably get the plaudits, Carrigan more than holds his own in comparison - 9
9. Paix - Not sure exactly what’s happened the last two weeks but he’s been pretty invisible in attack. 2 runs for 6m is not enormous this but his defensive issues are a bit of a myth. 41 tackles with 0 misses and this is a trend through the first three rounds. I’m hoping his attacking runs will come but it isn’t really his go. He’s doing enough to hold his spot until Mozer or Mam are right but is turning into a bit of a McCullough 2.0 - 6
10. Haas - Where do you start? The guy has levelled up. He runs with so much venom, pops up everywhere, even to side on a loose ball in goal and man, that try. A front rower should not be able to run like that fresh, let alone under fatigue. Just read this: 210m, 9 tackle breaks, 5 offloads, 2 line breaks, 1 line break assist, 1 try, 36 tackles! Unreal - 10
11. Gosiewski - scored a nice try which was a bit Gillett like but missed 3 tackles out of 15 and seemed to get hooked for Piakura. Not sure he’s doing enough to warrant being a starter - 4
12. Riki - There were signs his running game might be coming to life for the first time in like 3 years. They weren’t head turning but they were undoubtedly there, good to see. 43 tackles and only 2 misses, will take that any day - 7
13. Hetherington - He was really good in his second stint but what we need with him starting is to cut down guys in the middle with his hits and the last two weeks he just hasn’t done it and it’s allowed both the Raiders and Cows to roll down field too easily. He needs to sort that out because his first and second stints are like chalk and cheese unfortunately - 6

14. Walters - I thought that we looked a lot better in attack when he came on because he is a running threat. Unfortunately, he seemed to kind of step himself out of a try which now is pretty funny but at the time was frustrating. He is though a lot better than he gets credit for - 7
15. Jensen - I really wanted to see him step up after two pretty disappointing first games and he definitely did. He tucker the ball under the arm and ran straight. No stupid offloads, just hard runs and solid defense. He was really good and the challenge will be to make this kind of performance the norm - 8
16. Willison - I really liked that he seemed willing to do the hard graft tonight. No flashy plays and no huge stats but no errors or penalties. Just a good, solid no frills game and I liked it - 7
17. Piakura - I thought he really bought some energy and outplayed Gosiewski pretty comfortably. He bought a bit of starch to the defense and punch to his runs. Nothing overly impressive stats wise but I liked the improvement I saw - 7
I would drop mariner for stages. Yes he caught one hospital pass (flute) but then drop a sitter that lead to a try for cowboys. So mariner to q cup to continue improving on defence as he was beaten few times

I'm starting to get concerned that what's going on with Walsh is more the fear of getting absolutely drilled again like he did a few times last year. He drops the ball more often than not when he's making contact with the line when he's really moving, particularly sideways, yet he's pretty good when charging out from our end because the defense is looking to hold him up upright, not looking to iron him out suaalli style.

If I'm Madge, I'm getting Walsh to be the support runner off Patty and Haas for the next few weeks through the middle, he's got the pace to beat the forwards and if they do get him, it will normally be a ball and all or a legs tackle. We need to use him differently than we are now until he get's his mojo back. Most of his errors are where he has the ball in front of him ready to (or pushing) a pass that isn't on. Make him the recipient for a while and just tuck it under the wing and light the jets. If you get tackled, so be it.

I’ve got a great idea let’s run a bloke shit scared of the pressure from edge defenders through the middle at the big boppers.

Walsh is not that style of fullback. He is a small guy whose skills come to light in space. Stick him in the middle for the off chance an opportunity might come, where if it doesn’t he is predominantly ineffective with this positioning or put him on an edge where he should be. Look the edge admittedly is not working for him but it’s cause he isn’t having space created for him, there is a real lack of shape or intent for him to be at the back of fast and direct shape and he is shit scared of being hit. Can’t imagine he is gonna love roaming and running up the guts.

Nearly every error is the exact same… Walsh playing second receiver in a sweep play off a slow play the ball, defence rushing right up and getting in his face and Walsh (in the microsecond he has) frantically trying to shift the ball laterally and either forcing a bad pass, not catching it cleanly or knocking it on as he tries to pass in contact.

He needs to be in space and looking to run, stop putting him (or letting him put himself) in the same circumstance over and over again and being surprised when we get the same results.
Agree 100% with this.

There was the one pass that Reynolds did to Walsh where he double pumped and went into the line before sending it out the back to Walsh.

It was great play to draw defenders and what not, but by the time it got to Walsh the winger was right up in his face and Walsh dropped it.

It just didn't end up giving Walsh any space and cows were just waiting for the ball to get to him.

Similar happened with Bhunt when we were very tight and Walsh gets it and tries to force a pass to Shiba who I think got tackled without the ball.

I was kind of like just run Walsh, but there was no space between him, Bhunt and Shiba, so the whole defence was just condensed waiting for him to get it.

The play looks nice from the halves, but it's not really giving Walsh space... what it is doing is making the defence make a decision early.

On both of the above plays the winger is standing there completely open... the ball hasn't left the halves hands and the defence has committed... both Reyno and Bhunt should be able to see that and just throw the cut out ball.

The issue tonight was the complete refusal to just throw a cut out... cows were committing and coming up and in all night.

It ended up being Walsh that threw the cut out ball to Arthars, but it just wasn't great from Reynolds and Bhunt tonight... it's like going through the motions again... it worked in training so let's go with that, instead of reading and reacting to the defence and taking what they were giving them.
