One of those "frustrating wins" this one.

We might need to be worried that we're simply getting outcoached. That is two times now our opposition have come out with the intent to rattle our cage. The Cows got the playbook from Canberra and did it for a lot of that game, but luckily for us they were shit enough to gift us opportunities.

Opposition defences have the Walsh sweep play well and truly found out. They are up in his face real early and not giving him any room to breathe, and he is error prone enough that it will work for them most of the time. He needs to start going looking for offloads up the middle more often.

Shibasaki had his best game in first grade so he can see Staggs coming up in the rear view mirror. Second rowers still unimpressive but Piaks to his credit was running with a bit of starch. Thank god Haas is a natural freak because he is far and away our best right now.

3. Haas
2. Reynolds
1. Shibasaki
This is why we need back rowers who can run aggressively at the line.
Hitting the crash runner a few times keeps them guessing but we are so bad in that area.

Positive I take from that apart from the obvious win is that we wouldn't have won it last year.

Our fitness is right up there. It as allowed us to stay in the game last week and this week it got us over the line.

I think the easy win in round one probably wasn't what we needed. A tough lesson last week and a bit of a tough win this week gives you something to build on.

Madge is now getting an idea. It's hard to get if you flog a team. I have faith we will get better. There has been changes around the park and apart from game one they are just not in sink yet with each other.

Walsh is struggling but he has some solid leaders around him that can help. He will get it back because unlike Milf he appears to have some work ethic. He made the first tackle on Tomololo and then another good one few seconds after to start the game.

Onto something really positive, boy does Madge know how to get the best of Payne.

I believe he has the potential as well but like you said he’s not there yet. So why is he being paid a million bucks so soon and being picked first for origin?
100% on both counts. He is not a million dollar player yet and I would pick both ponga and the hammer over him for origin.
He will however be a million dollar player one day and will eclipse Ponga in time.
He is a kid learning his trade and he is also in a patch of bad form/low confidence, but writing him off is insane.

1 thing I thought was funny was when Haas had his individual brilliant lone try, his Dad kevie said dint forget about his son passing him the ball.
that was a good joke kman. His dad is Kevin walters, 5 time premiership winner for the Broncos. He's not the coach anymore, its all good to love him again.

Here we go:

1. Walsh - Rocks and diamonds but thankfully not as bad as last week. He clearly has issues but the commitment in defense was clear tonight. There were signs some things might be starting to click but other signs he needs a break to freshen up mentally. He unfortunately kept getting in the way in attack but that 40/20 was amazing - 3
2. Cobbo - Struggled early and looked to perhaps pick up an injury because he didn’t look to be moving that freely but then went to fullback on kick returns and was Inglis-like. I hope Maguire persists with this in game change from time to time because Cobbo with space to run is destruction itself - 7
3. Mariner - He is so silky and is getting better and better. When he has space, he is tough to stop. I noticed him and Cobbo swapped quite a bit in attack and defense and I liked it, keeps the opposition guessing. Not as destructive as last week but still good and I have no idea how he didn’t drop that Walsh hospital pass - 6
4. Shibasaki - I’m loving this second coming of the bloke. He is so calm under pressure and does not shirk the tough run out of yardage. How he got that ball back out of the in goal I’ll never know but what a run. He’s making it very hard for Maguire to drop him in favour of Mariner and Staggs, really impressive - 9
5. Arthars - Not quite as silky as the first two rounds but still very good. He did technically drop the ball for the Cows first try but there really harsh. He is just generally so solid and has some very good wheels to get between defenders. Very underrated outside the club - 7
6. Hunt - He seems to be struggling a bit adapting to being sometimes second or third fiddle but the class is obvious and he never gives up on any play. Round 1 showed how it will be when the spine clicks, we just need to be patient - 6
7. Reynolds - Very kick happy tonight but mostly, rightly so and if not for a couple of weird ball bounces, could have had more try assists. He really took ownership tonight, very good game - 8
8. Carrigan - What a treat to have our front row. 198m and 28 tackles without a miss. Our middle really stood up tonight. The Cows were not going through there this evening and that was the most pleasing thing on the goal line. Carrigan is amazing and while Haas will understandably get the plaudits, Carrigan more than holds his own in comparison - 9
9. Paix - Not sure exactly what’s happened the last two weeks but he’s been pretty invisible in attack. 2 runs for 6m is not enormous this but his defensive issues are a bit of a myth. 41 tackles with 0 misses and this is a trend through the first three rounds. I’m hoping his attacking runs will come but it isn’t really his go. He’s doing enough to hold his spot until Mozer or Mam are right but is turning into a bit of a McCullough 2.0 - 6
10. Haas - Where do you start? The guy has levelled up. He runs with so much venom, pops up everywhere, even to side on a loose ball in goal and man, that try. A front rower should not be able to run like that fresh, let alone under fatigue. Just read this: 210m, 9 tackle breaks, 5 offloads, 2 line breaks, 1 line break assist, 1 try, 36 tackles! Unreal - 10
11. Gosiewski - scored a nice try which was a bit Gillett like but missed 3 tackles out of 15 and seemed to get hooked for Piakura. Not sure he’s doing enough to warrant being a starter - 4
12. Riki - There were signs his running game might be coming to life for the first time in like 3 years. They weren’t head turning but they were undoubtedly there, good to see. 43 tackles and only 2 misses, will take that any day - 7
13. Hetherington - He was really good in his second stint but what we need with him starting is to cut down guys in the middle with his hits and the last two weeks he just hasn’t done it and it’s allowed both the Raiders and Cows to roll down field too easily. He needs to sort that out because his first and second stints are like chalk and cheese unfortunately - 6

14. Walters - I thought that we looked a lot better in attack when he came on because he is a running threat. Unfortunately, he seemed to kind of step himself out of a try which now is pretty funny but at the time was frustrating. He is though a lot better than he gets credit for - 7
15. Jensen - I really wanted to see him step up after two pretty disappointing first games and he definitely did. He tucker the ball under the arm and ran straight. No stupid offloads, just hard runs and solid defense. He was really good and the challenge will be to make this kind of performance the norm - 8
16. Willison - I really liked that he seemed willing to do the hard graft tonight. No flashy plays and no huge stats but no errors or penalties. Just a good, solid no frills game and I liked it - 7
17. Piakura - I thought he really bought some energy and outplayed Gosiewski pretty comfortably. He bought a bit of starch to the defense and punch to his runs. Nothing overly impressive stats wise but I liked the improvement I saw - 7

The problem I have with Reece, is that it’s the same issue every season. I just don’t know when he’ll learn.
I don’t think it’s the same. His role has been minimised to nothing. He just isn’t suiting what’s being given to him. He isn’t the bloke that’s gonna run the ball 25 times and get 250 metres. Put him on an edge running shape. Use the **** as a decoy for all I care he isn’t being used right and a lot of it is the clear lack of cohesion coming from Reynolds and Hunt. It just hasn’t worked the last 2 weeks. I think Ezra’s stocks are rising by the week because if anything has been obvious the past couple years he unlocks Walsh very well.

Feel like we missed the jump again, particularly in the second half. Patty doesn’t work at prop, especially with haas running wider & looking for offloads. We need someone running no nonsense & hard up the guts. Madge has to tap someone on the shoulder and designate him the enforcer, someone that can set the temperament of the side and give us some energy & aggression up front.

Walsh is playing with the pressure of thinking he has to come up with something whenever we are behind or feeling threatened on the scoreboard and he inevitably overplays his hand and comes up with errors. He did the same thing last year, just maybe not to the same extent. He needs to focus just on his game, even strip it right back and just be a ball runner & leave the playmaking to Hunt & Reyno for now.

I hope staggs return gives us a lift in energy because we are well off the pace of what Penrith & Melbourne showed last night.

On a positive note I thought Hunt’s defence was much improved, he didn’t always stick to his tackles but he at least put his body forward & stopped them long enough for others to finish the job.

Let's not forget we don't just have a new head coach, we have 2 new assistants as well.

I'm not pretending it was a good watch, but we won, it's early, whole new coaching team, new gameplan, new halves pairing, new starting 9.

We have time on our side and have banked 2 wins from 3.

Would love to see Cobbo sometimes playing as a second fullback in attack.
Both Cobbo and Walsh sitting out the back of shape on a left hand sweep. Which one would you put the numbers in defence on..
Would take so much pressure off Walsh and clear path to the line for Arthars on most occasions

Spot on.
I rewatched every try from 2023 the other day and the amount of tries that went from Reyno to Ezra to Reece was huge.
Ez and Reece have that connection that Hunt and Reece don’t seem to yet.

I know Walshy had a lot of errors, but the kid never drops his head or gives up.
He still had the confidence late in the second half to attempt a kick chase through a bunch of defenders and still jumped high for every ball kicked his way.

The ref also needs to be stood down i reckon.
Ive been trying to go easy on the refs this season but this guy was missing the most basic infringements all night.

There was a moment where the ref was standing on the goal line with the defenders calling for the ptb and there was 3 cowboys either side of him, all a full meter in front of the defensive line.

How do you miss that shit? Unacceptable.
