POST GAME Round 3 - Panthers vs Broncos

That was one way to ruin a Saturday night.

Disappointing effort, the Broncos were loose all game and the Panthers took advantage with their power game. Credit where it's due, I thought they were strong tonight Penrith. Peachey and Cartwright were a real handful and they slayed the Broncos down both edges.

I don't particularly understand Bennett's decision to keep Nikorima out on the field as long as he did. I'm a fan of the guy but it was evident the Panthers were targetting him (like they did Garvey) and more often than not the Broncos were caught short in defence. I guess it's all about the learning experience, giving Kodi a chance to step up but unfortunately on this evening it didn't pan out.

On the positive side, I thought McGuire was outstanding tonight. The way he was able to get himself involved was remarkable and one of the most disappointing aspects of the loss is that his performance will be glossed over. That play with 5 to go where Hunt raced out to prevent the field goal and McGuire was there in support actually made me really happy. It's why the loose pass from Kodi really hurt.

I think it's a case of the Broncos being off, the Panthers being a team we typically struggle against, a couple of lucky bounces and that's all she wrote.

Absolutely agree re Nikorima. We need to decide what kind of player we want him to be. Is he an impact player or back up dummy half? If he is an impact player he either needs less minutes to be fresh or have him defending on the wing or something so he's not doing as much in defence. His tiredness at the end of the game from dummy half was a big contributor to our loss in my opinion.

I understand the need to give him more minutes in some games. We are one injury to Hunt or Milf away from him needing to be an 80 minute player. It's better that he is not too underdone if and when that time comes.

Shit, that's right. He has lost against Bennett.. Forgot about the Round 25, 2013 game.

Still.. Bennett has a real knack for losing these games.

Don't forgot the draw against the Knights also, when we were desperate for points to make the 8.

I thought Wallace was outstanding.
Totally agree and yet I don't expect people on this forum to support your view. He was much maligned here but our poor showings were seldom if ever, down to him.

I agree that Parker is not captain material. Doesn't lead and Marshall the troops in any way. His record as captain previously was terrible.

Am i right in thinking Parker has quite a poor win rate as captain?

I just never saw that coming we just completely turned of after halftime and just invited them back into the game. I was stressing out over some college stuff in the second half so I didn't really see what caused the collapse but it looked like sloppy execution and unforced errors that just let Penrith back into it. Milford and Gillett were our best players again Gillett has been our best across the 3 games.

From the Penrith side I really liked the performances of Mansour, Cartwright and RCG. If I was a NSW selector Mansour would be the first winger I would pick to replace B.Morris, such a strong runner of the ball.

I have a feeling the team switched off and started looking ahead to next week at half time and once you switch off, it's so very difficult to switch back on. Oates is a massive loss and that was felt tonight. The Cows switched off last week and look at how they responded. We may lose again next week but I'm extremely confident the quality of play and coaching will be a HUGE step up again.

If I was reading this thread without knowing the score, I'd think we were beaten by 30 and got totally outplayed.

They took the lead in the last few minutes and only by a lot of mistakes from us. If we turned up with a better attitude, we win easy.

Questioning Parker's captaincy is ridiculous IMO. Making the point by using his win rate record is also ridiculous. He needs to give up goal kicking though, he's not a goal kicker's asshole.

He can kick a long way tho... Too fucking long

A couple of notes from the game.

> We missed Oates big time. We need him for his power game when starting return sets. I think this played a part in our team looking tired. Our forwards were being asked to do just that bit more to get us moving.
> Our defense was very poor in the second half, the second faze play made our line look very shabby.
> Hunt is playing fine, the issue is Milf is standing up more at the moment and we are just not seeing Hunt be the main man as we have for the last two years, so this is confusing people. This is not to say Hunt is at his best, he is not but all he needs is one game to bring it together.
> They need to find a way to use Roberts, forcing the ball his way is not going to cut it.

This is spot on IMO

On him, off-contract at the end of the year. Make it happen Wayne. Dude's a beast.

(I realise how big of a long-shot it is, but still)

We got put 17-0 on us in just over 40 minutes, and yeah we were totally outplayed in the second half. It was inexcusable and they need to be confronted with it, instead of burying our head in the sand and pretending it was just a fluke from the opposition!

I don't care about his win record as a captain, but the biggest responsible for the team's attitude on the field, is the captain. That is one of his main tasks, he failed, and he also did not lead by example. This is not the first, second of third time it happened under his captaincy!

P.S. It really pissed me off to see Griffin do something at the Panthers he would never do with us. Take a gamble on a youngster and play the right players in the right positions. Bringing Te Maire in, allowing Peachey and Cartwright to go back to second row, while putting Wallace at hooker was half the win. The ranga was brilliant in the way he constantly fed his forwards and halves properly, getting them over the advantage line and us back peddling continuously.

Bringing Roberts into the game in a meaningful way relies on Hunt's running game. If Hunt makes a break into open space, I expect Roberts will be supporting all the way to the tryline.
