POST GAME Round 3 - Panthers vs Broncos

A couple of notes from the game.

> We missed Oates big time. We need him for his power game when starting return sets. I think this played a part in our team looking tired. Our forwards were being asked to do just that bit more to get us moving.
> Our defense was very poor in the second half, the second faze play made our line look very shabby.
> Hunt is playing fine, the issue is Milf is standing up more at the moment and we are just not seeing Hunt be the main man as we have for the last two years, so this is confusing people. This is not to say Hunt is at his best, he is not but all he needs is one game to bring it together.
> They need to find a way to use Roberts, forcing the ball his way is not going to cut it.

I still think this squad needs a 'cannon ball' forward or two ..

If I was reading this thread without knowing the score, I'd think we were beaten by 30 and got totally outplayed.

They took the lead in the last few minutes and only by a lot of mistakes from us. If we turned up with a better attitude, we win easy.

Questioning Parker's captaincy is ridiculous IMO. Making the point by using his win rate record is also ridiculous. He needs to give up goal kicking though, he's not a goal kicker's asshole.

Then neither is Cam Smith who Parker has the same career kicking percentage as.

Does anyone have a view as to why Nik played so many minutes, and relatively poor ones at that (while I for one thought Macca played pretty well), and why Offa got no minutes - especially when I thought he played quite well last week?

I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out Bennett's thinking here when it seemed to me (1) we were doing rather well with Macca on the park, and (2) we could have used Offa as a fresh forward when we were really under pressure?

I understand the need to give him more minutes in some games. We are one injury to Hunt or Milf away from him needing to be an 80 minute player. It's better that he is not too underdone if and when that time comes.

^^This was my theory^^

I was expecting those questions to be asked in the presser, but neither was... weird.

Cam Smith improved a heck of a lot last year, no way Parker is in his league as a goal kicker any more. He's been inconsistent for years now, and it's cost us games and/or put us under pressure. We can do better than him for a goal kicker.

Maybe the increased Knik minutes is karma coming back to bite the Macca haters. Be careful what you wish for.

We got put 17-0 on us in just over 40 minutes, and yeah we were totally outplayed in the second half. It was inexcusable and they need to be confronted with it, instead of burying our head in the sand and pretending it was just a fluke from the opposition!

I don't care about his win record as a captain, but the biggest responsible for the team's attitude on the field, is the captain. That is one of his main tasks, he failed, and he also did not lead by example. This is not the first, second of third time it happened under his captaincy!

P.S. It really pissed me off to see Griffin do something at the Panthers he would never do with us. Take a gamble on a youngster and play the right players in the right positions. Bringing Te Maire in, allowing Peachey and Cartwright to go back to second row, while putting Wallace at hooker was half the win. The ranga was brilliant in the way he constantly fed his forwards and halves properly, getting them over the advantage line and us back peddling continuously.
By that logic, we put 22 on them in just under 40 minutes. They were totally outplayed in the first half. I'm not excusing it, but we lost by a single point, and in the previous two games, we've had one try per game scored against us. It's not the end of the world, we fell out of it for a game, they were exhausted, and couldn't get the two points in the end.

So every time we come out with a great attitude, are people going to be posting and crediting Parker for getting the team in the right mindset? Every team in the competition has off weeks, that's not the captains fault. There's nothing to suggest he's been a problem so far. It's far too early to make calls like that.

And I think we can both agree on the Griffin part but at least it looks like he might've learned from past mistakes. Shame he couldn't do that here. I wish him all the best, he's a good man by all accounts.

I suppose the glass can be half full or half empty to some people.

I saw Wallace's shift to dummy half as Griffin already conceding that he has better halves options and is now "stuck" with ole Pete again and is trying to figure out what to do with him.

Second faze play ha ha !

I think Bennett is just experimenting..

Kodi played longer minutes last week, as well.

Or maybe Macca did something behind the scenes and this is Bennett punishing him.

Who knows what's going on?

Maybe I'm being unfair, but I didn't think the Broncos played well at any point last night.

Yes, a few individuals started the game well and some of them even kept the Broncos in the game but there was no consistensy in the Broncos performance. They went away from what was working for them, kicking it to corners and backing their natural talents, mobility and fitness to see them through. Penrith were gifted far too much territory, did little to work for it and were under little pressure in the second half. Eventually it tolled on us, to the point where even the skipper came up with a colossal blunder.

What we saw was unacceptable and embarrassing. I can accept the fatigue, the inexperience and the mistakes at the death. What I can't accept is the chip and chase, the bat-ons, Milford playing tiggy with Latu or Gillett trying to scoop the ball when he's racing flat-out and the forced offloads.

I expect a much better effort on Friday.

Of course we put 22 on them, we were playing a young Panthers team missing several of their most important players. That wasn't a shame on them, but what happened after that, was definitely a shame on us!
The best way to ensure it happens again, is to brush it off like that.

The captain's biggest responsibility is not how a team comes out onto the field (although it also matters), but rally them and pull them out of anything they fall into, exactly like Saturday night. I've seen Locky do that many times, but Corey doesn't seem to be able to, much like Thaiday wasn't.

Let's agree to disagree. IMO I don't see a bad performance as shameful or a negative, in elite sports it happens often. Honestly I don't care about the performance at all, my only concern is how they respond and play against the Cowboys. Having an off game is okay, good even if it serves as a lesson for future games.

The way I see it, yes we played bad, but I've seen enough so far to suggest that once we click and cut out the silly parts, we're going to be a super strong team. I'm not at all concerned, but I will be if we don't turn up next week.

After losing by 1 point after the hooter in a grand final, it's hard to really take a loss like this to heart.
