Round 4 - Rabbitohs vs Broncos - Post Match Discussion

With all the **** that happened in the first half to come back like that was amazing to watch, the Leagues Club went off!

It's difficult to put into words the pride I feel for what this team has shown tonight. We've come a long, long way from that team that lost 56-0 in Canberra, very much thanks to Anthony Griffin, as well as Andrew Gee and of course Paul White, who took that courageous step to do what needed to be done!

What I feared most in the years post Lockyer, was how the team would react to adversity. Well, it doesn't come worse than tonight; from dreadful referee decisions to the incredibly unlucky Jharal Yow Yeh injury, they withstood, overcame and vanquished everything thrown at them last night!

Starting with Jharal, I've seen several of those injuries in my time as a soccer player and supporter, and while some players never recovered enough, others came back at the same level. I just hope that the latter will be the case for Yow Yeh, but it will depend much more on the damage to ligaments and tendons than the break itself, no matter how awful it looks!

As for the game... Those first 20 minutes were diabolical, just wow! Soft first try with Reed and Norman opening the gates for Inglis, while Beale came in again when he shouldn't have, making way for a too easy 2 on 1, with Inglis drawing Hoffman and putting Everingham through with a simple pass.
Besides that moment, we were only in trouble when Souths accelerated the play the ball, and Luke made those darts to put them on the front leg. Our ruck defense still needs to tighten up more, it's our main weakness imo.

Credit to the boys though, for the amazing scramble defense every time our line was broken (Hannant and Gillett catching their halfback was inspirational), and the way they accounted for Inglis, Taylor and Burgess relatively easily after those ill-fated first 25 minutes, which in turn allowed Wallace in particular, to start organising our attack and putting us on the front foot with an excellent kicking game. A lot of credit should go to Norman as well for his foresight in Beale's first try, identifying the gap and calling for the ball quickly to put us ahead on the score board.

In a game where every Bronco stood up to be counted, Wallace, Gillett, Hoffman (my POTS), Thaiday, Hannant, Te'o, Hunt and Beale led the charge.

Damm, I love this team!

Hopefully Beale will stay on the right wing (where he actually appears more comfortable) and Gagai will make the left his own.

Beales first try was a beauty. Good thinking from Wallace and how good was Hunt to get to the ball first.. Hunt is ready to break out I tell ya.

Very, very proud of that effort last night. Can't think of too many times in recent years where we've put on such a gutsy and convincing come back after having that much go against us in the first half hour or so. And all without Locky giving his guidance in such situations, which should be a big confidence boost for the players and supporters alike.

As others have already pointed out, hopefully the nature of Jharal's injury is such that he'll avoid the more major complications associated with those kinds of breaks. I still feel sick thinking about it. Best of luck to him.

Yes.

I see Hoffman having as much talent as Slater. He just needs to keep coming up and getting more involved as does Slater. And the way he so easily stepped Inglis to score was so sweet.

Still very pumped after last night's great effort but I'm still desperately ad for Yow-Yeh. It's a shocker of an injury and you'd have to wonder if he'll be able to do the same things when he comes back. Can you imagine what will go through his head when he next jumps to contest a bomb amongst a throng of players? I hope we're scouring for the best surgeons in the country but it seems the real work will come with the rehab.

On the game itself - as I mentioned last night it's our most couragous win in years and will give them an enormous amount of confidence.

So who comes into the team? You'd think Copley but with Gagai being 18th man he's also well in contention.

Well, I don't seem to have read much about Copley recently, it's mostly Gagai this and Gagai that. Which is fair enough. I also think I read somewhere here that people think Gagai is likely to be groomed as Hodges eventual replacement. If that's the case, it would seem sensible for Gagai to be given this (tragic) opportunity to play. Otherwise, if Copley is selected, then maybe Gagai is not thought of as highly as he seems to be.

Injury report on the official website:

JHARAL Yow Yeh's injury has been diagnosed in Perth today after he was taken to hospital during last night's NRL match against South Sydney.
The Australian Test winger has a compound fractured and dislocated right ankle after landing awkwardly attempting to catch a bomb in the first half of the game.
This morning he underwent a temporary procedure at the Perth hospital to have the wound cleaned and closed where the bone had broken the skin.
There will be further surgery once Yow Yeh has been seen by a specialist.
No comment will be able to be made on the amount of time he will be out of the game until that consultation with the surgeon and the second procedure has taken place.
The injury is not deemed career threatening.
Team management and the team doctor stayed with Yow Yeh in Perth when the team flew back overnight.
Yow Yeh's mother will join him in Perth today.

Poor fella :frown:

"The injury is not deemed career threatening."

Despite the injury, this is a huge positive I think. I was kind of worried about that prospect.

Gagai for sure.

I'd be happy with either. This is a great opportunity for one of them to cement themselves at the club. There's a wing spot available next season with Beale going (I'm not going to entertain the thought of Yow Yeh not coming back fit next year).

Wouldn't surprise me if Yow Yeh has next year off to be honest. It's a terrible situation for the young bloke, but I think he's gotta remember that he is a young bloke, only 22 years old, with plenty of years left in him. Patience is the key to his recovery. It's gonna be a long long road.

Why would he need 2 years off? Bad break but it's not as bad as an Achilles tendon rupture. Broken bones are one thing, they can heal. Ruptured tendons and ligaments are another and there's more chance of reinjury for tendons and ligaments than it is for broken bones.

Fair chance of ligament damage I would think.

They said he dislocated his ankle as well. So ligament damage for sure. I think he will play next year but we won't be rushing him. It is only March

What is wrong with people - sensationalism much? With a diligent rehabilitation (hopefully he doesn't fluff it like D. Mitchell did) he'll be close to his best by round 1 next year. Nothing to see here folks.
