The Roosters have an interesting playing style. They're often criticised for not putting in "an 80 minute performance" but I think it's deliberate. They have big forwards who thrive on their power game, but it's impossible to maintain that for 80 minutes with only 8 interchanges. So, just like we concede metres in defence in order to conserve energy, the Roosters concede momentum for the same reason. And while they'd prefer to just give away penalties in order to keep their line intact, ultimately they'll happily let in a soft try or two so long as there's enough time on the clock to hit back. Because when they do flick the switch on again, and they are able to get back on the front foot with tunnel-balls and flat passes from marker, they have some of the most potent outside backs to take advantage of the possession and field position.
What also helps is that this game plan is tailor-made to the current climate of refereeing. They don't have to whine and bitch like Thurston and Smith, they play the refs their own way - by knowing that any momentum and penalties they deliberately concede will be returned to them later when the refs check the balance sheet.
The trick is to not fall for it. A lot of teams get sucked in by the Roosters' dip in intensity, and go all out during that period to score as many points as possible. The danger is that it often leaves them not only lulled in to a false sense of security, but they've expended all their energy. So when the Roosters turn it back on, they don't have much left to hold them back. You almost need to go tit for tat with them, or better yet, play them at their own game. Our defensive plan is actually really good against this sort of attack - it means that while they're busting their guts trying to power through us, we let them. They can do all the running, we'll just jog back, take the next runner, and jog back again. It does mean we need to be error-free, which has been our downfall recently, but if we can keep holding them out and wait for one of their talented yet dumb-as-dog-shit stars to have a brain-fart, we'll get more than enough chances to score points.
