POST GAME Round 9 - Broncos vs Bulldogs

So lets say Lodge, Turps, Fifita, Coates, Farnworth, Joffa, Staggs, Glenn and whoever I have forgotten are all out:

1. Niu
2. Kennar
3. Walsh
4. Boyd
5. Isaako
6. Milford
7. Croft
8. Haas
9. Luke
10. TPJ
11. Oates
12. Teo
13. Carrigan (c)

14. Paix
15. Flegler
16. Kennedy
17. Hoppa

That has to be almost as bad as round 3 and 4. The talent is there for sure but so green/raw it isn't funny.
That's still a reasonable team but your point that a couple are pretty green is spot on. Mind you there's really only 4 relatively green players in the 1,2 and 3 with Paix on the bench. The rest of the team is not too bad.

But they will have almost no combinations (they didn't before seemingly). Even if they are decent, it is hard to trust your inside defender if you barely recognise him and he is different each week.

Well we just have to adapt like Melbourne do. Hopefully most of our lads are in a position they normally play. Many years ago I left my small pond and joined the big fish in the open water and the competition was stiff. It dragged me up to levels I didn't know I could achieve.

Everyone was a shark and everyone had a strong game. It really was sink or swim. Pressure makes diamonds and our lads, although green have the potential to kick on. It's not like we have substandard material with which to work. This season may not even finish and it really will be an asterisk season regardless. 2020 will be our proving ground and we'll be so much better for it. Optimistic for our future.

And Mr Fourex laughed at me because I didn't know what qualified as a 'try assist' ! Well, I still don't 🤔 He probably doesn't know either come to think of it.
Speaking very generally, the official NRL stats for a Try Assist tend to favour the kicker in a kicking play, or the player with the last touch in a passing or running play and are somewhat more consistent with this approach, whereas say Fox tend to try and analyse who had the greatest impact on the try creation which does require some subjective interpretation.

I should preface that by saying Fox in particular chop and change their interpretations seemingly every week, and in particular they seem to have a fondness for awarding subjective stats to players who are more prominent from a media perspective, which has seen the likes of Tedesco, Smith, Latrell etc benefit considerably in their numbers.

Well I for one don't feel as stupid as I felt when I confessed to not knowing how try assists worked. Like that fabulous try Coyne scored in SOO , everyone gets a try assist in my books. I think the absolute best way is to award every set of hands a try assist in a scoring move because indeed, that's what they've done.

Mate you think your stupid. I've been following League for 30 odd years and still can't work out why they call a block play a block play.

As long as he is wearing a Broncos jersey, that's enough

Maybe because the Full Block is in the line?

Dean Pay has quit the Bulldogs and bid farewell to Belmore.

I guess losing to us in 2020 was the final straw lol
Can't say I blame him, having to deal with the infighting within the club and as far as coaching goes he simply didn't have the cattle to work with unlike Seibold.

C'mon....don't take it so hard. T'was just a little bit of harmless ribbing.

The Broncos are so obsessed with the middle, the decision to shift one of the more skillful players in Pangai Jr made a ton of sense. The Broncos have really struggled to generate momentum in the middle with too many lumbering runs, Pangai's explosive running made a big difference.

I also thought the bench was better. Paix, Te'o and Hopoate all made positive contributions and brought a lot of energy onto the field which they've been missing. Flegler showed what he's capable of when he came on, but he was also very loose which is something he needs to fix up.

A few moments that stood out to me...

- Croft going second man to Niu, Niu realising the Bulldogs had the numbers and throwing a great pass back in the middle and giving Milford a chance to earn a repeat set in broken play. It's these type of combinations the Broncos have been lacking and it's nice to see some semblence of progress.

- Darius Boyd's try saver after Isaako let the ball bounce. Good situational awareness from Darbs, but I also think this is the frame of reference a lot of fans are using in regards to Niu's speed. Based on what I've seen of him at the Magpies, he's got good speed off the mark and gets on the outside of his players easily, but I've never seen him put on the after-burners like Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow. I don't know if this was a fair reference since he was tripped early and was hearded into Marshall-King by Wakeham but for fans who were a bit blindsided by Dex, there you go.

- The lead up to the Isaako try. The Broncos had fallen into a bit of a hole and they were lucky Montoya didn't take the ball cleanly or get a clean bat back for To'omaga. Instead, it appeared to come forward off Montoya, To'omaga missed the ball and Niu found the ball into some space. A couple of plays later, one of Milford's play three kicks finally comes off and Isaako showed some speed I didn't think he had. Crichton is no slouch either. The try was just what the Broncos needed and they coasted from there. However, there were still some anxious moments that a better team would have capitilised on.

A fair assessment. I would have also mentioned Flegler's try saving tackle when he held someone from the doggies up when they looked certain to score. he needs to get those loose carries out of his game though.

I pointed out that tackle last week but most seemed to think Flegler, Isaako and Croft were terrible when that wasn't the case. Mind you if we took out the handling errors of Isaako and Flegler their( Broncos overall) performance would have been pretty damn good. I rewatched the game two times and there was a lot to like. We aren't far off competing with the best.
