Round 9 Discussion

So....elbows to the head are fine?

billy slater looks like he's playing on very sore knees...

Was a sweet kick from Cronk for the last try.

Not surprised to see Titans brought back to earth. Very hard for them to impose their trench warfare style of play against a physical team like Souths.

Another rough day at the office for the Raiders. A bit like last year when the Warriors trounced us. Rarely happens, but every now and then they have a game where all the arsey ad lib stuff sticks.

Can't see Milford sticking around there next year. Admittedly we're fair from dominant, but they're looking like a rabble. What about all that hype? Ricky has them fitter than ever, happy and playing for each other? Club legend to turn it around?

Nice game of Rugby League too.

Melbourne and Manly cannot stand each other and will fight each other to the bitter end. Love it, one of the best rivalries in the game.

What a moment for young Queensland utility, Kurt Mann. He had some nervous moments tonight, but with every fibre of his being, he ran onto that pin-point kick like a rocket and boy I bet he's a popular member of that Storm side right at this second.

I thought Manly were very brave. As Billy would say (at least 10 times, but hey I can't hold a limit vernacular against him) they're a tough unit and they're always going to make you earn your victories. I thought they were the better team for the bulk of the contest, but Melbourne just came up with the right play at the crucial moments.

It's going to be interesting to see how Melbourne handle the Origin period. It's going to be a tough ask for them but if tonight is any indication, I believe they can still have a say come September. Meanwhile, Manly should be there barring an unforseen calamity. They're a great side and deserve all the superlatives.

Manly did pretty well considering they were missing Glewart, Lyon and Foran. Granted, they still have Watmough, DCE, Brewart, Ballin. But the Storm were full strength minus a winger or two.

I wanted Melbourne to lose, but I enjoyed Manly losing due to goal kicking.

I bet Benny Barba wishes he was still in Bellmore these days.

I had $10 on the Storm 1-12 so I'm happy. Besides which, I'm always happy when Manly lose. They're the only team I can't bring myself to barrack for.

I think it is kind of amazing how well the Dogs are doing with what is frankly one of the weaker spines in the comp. They lose Barba and replace with quite possibly the most underwhelming fullback in the competition and still sit atop the ladder. I don't think they have the personnel to win the thing but it is a credit to how good a coach Hasler is.

Hasler is a brilliant coach and Greenberg was a great CEO for them if for nothing else but securing Hasler, who IMO is the best coach in the game.

It shows why Barba went so well for them. They are the most forward-oriented team in the game, offloading and passing at will. Barba is most dangerous during broken and second-phase play. If we are to play to his strengths, we need to work on a similar game plan.

Hiku scores a controversial try.

Looked like Williams knocked it into Tonumaipea in the aerial contest. Bellamy looks like he's going to go punch some guys.

Yeah, that was funny shite, Bellamy losing it in the box then looks for someone on the sideline turns and grabs his coat to head on down looking like he was going to destroy someone, then thinks better of it and comes back.

As much as I would love Greg Bird to be rubbed out of Origin 1, there was nothing in that tackle and it didn't even warrant a penalty.

Under the current interpretation, it did and for good reason.

For mine, it's not a dangerous position. Their own definition of "above the horizontal" is when the head goes below the hips. Because he's on his back, with his head tilted up, this doesn't happen. Just because the flat area of his back is tilted downwards slightly, that doesn't matter. His head is above his hips, no foul.

Head below the hips at around 2:00.

Not the worst you'll see, but the fact that Bird has lifted him between the legs is a big no-no in the modern interpretation of the rule. It may not result in a suspension but it certainly warranted a penalty. Some might say it's a bit soft or unlucky in Bird's situation but in the aftermath of the McKinnon situation, I think the NRL need to be strict on these sorts of tackles to try and rub them out of the game.
