Round 9 - Penrith Panthers - Pre Game discussion

Boydy won't be back, I'm certain about that judging by all reports. I'd would rather have Maranta at fullback and Oates in the centres ! I know most would disagree but he is still mobile enough, certainly quick enough and quite possibly the quickest in the team. He has terrific front on defence, steady hands and fierce determination. Hopefully Garbo gets another shot and I thought he may have been injured in his last couple of games.

But he's doing really well on the wing and we have good players in the centres? I don't see why it's necessary.

True, totally true. It's just that I have an idea that Oates would be a revelation in the centres. More involved and I could just imagine him, one on one and fending away, trampling over his opponents. I guess I'm a fan of big rangy centres and see him in the Meninga/ Miles mould prior to them thickening up and going into the pack. He is still so young and I just think he has more skills, around the corner passes, good fend, tough as teak. I could also be totally wrong but I just don't think I am.

I definitely think he could play centre well, remember I'm the one who said he could play fullback earlier in the year. I just don't think we should weaken the wing spot when it's already our weakest position.

One part of me is thrilled with the Boyd early return, the other worries he will be rushed back into the Origin side.

Is an achillies injury something you are significantly more likely to reinjure if you've done it once?

Is there secondary issues with pulling hammies and calves because your muscles have deteriorated?
Achilles is one of the "good injuries" to have, in the sense that once it's cured, it's literally like new, and there is no added risk of injuring it again.

Any long term injury causes a degree of atrophy in the soft tissues, which is why recovery needs to be carefully built-up and seldom rushed, as it can indeed result in injuries, especially to sensitive thinks like hamstrings.

Boyd seems to have a good metabolism, which resulted in his achilles healing quick, which in turn allowed him to start recovery earlier. He doesn't have a frequent injury history, so hopefully this will be it for a while.

Looks good not too sure about the number 17 though, thought Dodds was injured and garbutts time in the first grade team has been strange.

we are lacking that one more seasoned prop. I don't think it would happen, but would you put oates in the 11 and have Sam come off the bench again? Would feel more balanced that way i think.

Yep. Dodds is out for the season. ACL.

As Huge said Garbutt is out injured last round too. Didn't play for South-Logan on the tele.
Not sure if he'll be back but he hasn't been horrible apart from 1 dropped ball. His NRL game time has been limited.

Honestly really liked what I saw of Reed on the wing and would like him at this stage to be our fourth choice winger
1. boyd
2. kahu
3. oates
4. reed
5. maranta
6. vidot

depending on our other needs eg oates to the pack and boyd/kahu to fullback/centre I think he should feature more often then not for us on the wing.

I'd kinda like to see this:

1. Kahu
2. Oates
3. Copley
4. Hodges
5. Maranta

14. Boyd
15. Kodi

Bring Boyd on for the 2nd half with Oates moving to the pack and Kahu to wing. Or just have Boyd ease himself into the pace of things on the wing.

Don't want to lose Kodi's impact but there's more value in having Boyd on the bench than having 7mins of Francis Molo.

Please no.

Why not b4l?

Are you a big fan of 7 minutes of Molo?

I can't forget Thaiday's terrific performance as prop in the Roosters game.

Assuming everyone is fit and available:

Kahu
Boyd (alternating with Kahu)
Copley
Hodges
Oates
Milford
Hunt
Thaiday
Macca
Blair
McGuire (Strong, fast and a good step)
Gillett
Parker

Kodi
Wallace
Garbutt
Another prop

Surely you're not assuming Boyd will play against the Panthers....?

Why not ... He has been cleared to return.

Panthers game is another week away.

Sure...return to full training...return to full body contact.......return straight into the NRL even with the week up our sleeve, I'm not so sure?

Achilles injury.....tricky.

I'm assuming that Boyd will return when medical advice says he is ready, and Boyd and Bennett agree. I will be happy when that is the case, whenever it is. If it's for the Panthers game, great!

My only caveat is that he spends most of his 1st and maybe 2nd games with good stints on the wing, and maybe spending a little time at FB, alternating with Kahu.

With Hodges due back, the wing selections will be interesting. i am keen to see what Bennett does with Reed, Oates and Maranta.

If Boyd and Kahu return, I'll be happy to see Reed and Maranta dropped unless Bennett has back row plans for Oates. Having said that, it seems Bennett still "likes" Reed and Maranta which will make the wing selections most interesting.

As for Copley, my thoughts are he shown enough class in the centres to be given a good number of games there to show if he succeeds, or fails. For mine, with confidence, experience and stability as a centre, he will prove to be a 1st class centre.

it has been reported that he has been running for about 4-6 weeks and in full contact for about 2. that gives him at least 3 weeks of full contact training before the Panthers game... and club medical staff have reportedly cleared him to return
