Salary Cap

I think in addition to all that, the "independent commission whatever it shall be named" should put together a marquee list of 50 players, the players they consider the best of the best, the ones that do, are, and will continue to be the ones that feature in Origin and Test football.

They should get a reward for that that is exclusive of the salary cap.
I totally agree.

The "Independent Commission" should do something similar to what cricket does. They should select the top 30 or even 35 players who are paid entirely by the "I.C." and are exempt from any salary cap. The players then get to choose what club they play for. Contracts could be only one year or maybe two years.

For example, lets say Lockyer, Falou, Hodges & Thaiday are all part of the elite list, they could get anywhere from $1m or $750G each. That would then allow 25 other players to form part of the salary cap that Brisbane pay for out of their own pocket.

Clubs are then not disadvantaged by having a bulk of their salary cap away for games during representative fixtures and the elite players are paid what they are worth.

Of course this is not a perfect system and does have flaws, but it allows for more depth, and rewards our great players. It could be argued that a club could have up to 5 or 6 players on that list that want to play with one club, so you could limit it to 2 or 3 players at one club or something else, it is a part of my plan I haven't really thought through. Perhaps something like a 'marquee' non representative player is allowed at clubs that do not have anyone on the elite contract list.

All the Salary cap does is let the NRL keep all the nuffie Sydney teams in the comp. We need to get rid of 4 Sydney Teams and create more money through our TV deal so we can actually pay players more. Also Rep payments should be higher and 3rd party deals should be easier to obtain.

If you get rid of 4 Sydney teams you won't get a higher TV deal.

That doesn't stop disadvantage though. Say the Broncos have player A in the elite squad, and the Sharks want to poach him.

There is absolutely no enticement to move to another club.

Than the Broncos will just get the best 3 players in the game every year.

How though. Why would the Broncos get them. They get paid the same across the board. Why would the best players move from their club, and play for a losing Broncos side, that seems to have lost it's pride, and a questionable coach?

John McCoy on his sports show said he had mail from someone he believes that the Storm will be joint wooden spooners this year.

I got told that today too by someone who knows someone else.

I see that as a positive though, it means that players are more likely to stay and show some loyalty to the club/ fans

Also, the top 25 marquee squad could be funded (in part) by specific advertising deals, direct funding from ARL/ SOO games or even a "tax" on all the NRL clubs

Only 3-4 clubs could afford to pay up to $3 mil for just 3 players.
Bulldogs, Broncos, Roosters and Souths, most other clubs would struggle to find an extra $3mill a year.

Yes, but we're talking about the IC paying these players to keep it fair for the shit clubs.

then allow each club to only keep say 30players on its books for first grade.

Well that's about $48 million, gotta come from somewhere NRL is struggling to increase the club grant to match the salary cap atm so I doubt they could afford another $3 mill to each club.

The next TV rights deal should be about a Billion if that happens Increase the club grant to $7 million and the Salary cap to $8 million. Struggling clubs wouldn't be any worse off but with a $8 million salary cap we could finally afford to pay players what they're worth and wouldn't see such an exodus perhaps the opposite with players coming from overseas to the NRL as the norm.

That's for 2012 for the next 2 years not much can change and for the TV deal to be big Storm have to be in the competition and be going strong.

I still say just get rid of it. Fair or not, teams will have to fend for themselves. If they go under, well the NRL doesn't need them.

But, why do we want to move players around clubs? Aren't we saying that the loyalty is lost because players are taking money over club loyalty?

I'd bet Gallen would be on the marquee player list so he would be exempt from the club which would allow them to perhaps go after Matt King or Shaun Berrigan or a host of other names that are playing in the English super league.

If we were to get 30-25 quality players from England wouldn't that improve the competition?

But really there's at least 6 possibly more teams that wouldn't survive without a salary cap.
Can we run a competition and get a good TV deal if we only have 8-10 teams, I don't think so.

What I would love however is at least two Sydney teams to either re-locate or die and be replaced with teams in other suburbs such as central coast and some other location with a strong interest in league.
