2018 will be Sam Thaiday's last season. He is retiring at the end of the year.

Thaiday dons old man outfit to announce retirement

SAM Thaiday has today confirmed 2018 will be his last season in the NRL – and he has done it in his own individual way.
Thaiday today did a community visit to a Wesley Mission Queensland retirement village, Wheller On The Park, in the Brisbane suburb of Chermside.
While there he took the opportunity to formally announce his retirement from the game, effective at the end of this season.
And always one to make light of himself, the Broncos' forward dressed up as Sam Thaiday in 40 years' time.

In a wig and make up, Thaiday came out to front the press and confirm his glittering rugby league career was coming to a close.

Afterwards he spent time with the village residents, who are keen rugby league fans who have a footy tipping competition with over 200 members.

After nearly 300 NRL games, 29 Origin matches and 32 Tests for the Kangaroos, the next chapter of Thaiday's professional life beckons.

As does more time with his family - wife Rachel and daughters Gracie and Ellsie.
"I've always been a bit different in everything I've done - but I've always been true to myself and done things my way," said Thaiday.

"So this is my way of being remembered.

"Because if you don't remember my incredible rugby league resume, how are you going to forget that footy player that announced his retirement dressed up as himself as an old man?

"I've been lucky enough to be a Bronco for 16 seasons, and played for my State and my country.

"I've seen the game change – from 12 to eight interchanges, from one to two referees, to the bunker, live streaming, and the effect of social media.

"I'm definitely one of the lucky ones who has turned a fun game I played as a kid into a job I love as an adult.

"But my time has come.

"Thank you all for the support throughout my career thus far, and of course for the rest of the season."

Has been a legend for Broncs, Qld and Australia. He deserves all the plaudits he'll get. There was a stretch there where he was easily the best second-rower in the world, we've been privileged to watch him his whole career at the Broncs.

Did anyone see the Broncos stream on instagram where he shaved his head into a Mr Burns cut, great sense of humour.

For me his definitely a character of the club and that will be the Sammy I will miss, on the field not so much.

BTW although we knew he was pretty much retiring, I'm glad his made it official and not dragged it on, it will help with organising and retaining our forward pack for the future.

Yeah look, he has gone on two or three season too long but nevertheless, don't forget how good he was from about 25 - 31. To do what he did while being hampered a large part of his career by osteitis pubis says a lot about his character and willingness to not only play through the pain barrier but succeed. Will rightfully go down as a legend of the club and one of the last true characters of sport.

I look at Sam's presence in the past couple of seasons as being there as a morale boost for the squad the type of player who keeps the spirits up, but performance wise on the field his a shadow of his former self, granted his suffered from Osteitis pubis but he probably should have called it quits after 2015-2016 IMO, I'm glad though his put to bed any thoughts of playing on he just doesn't have it in him anymore.

I actually think he's been pretty decent form wise this year, certainly not a liability IMO. It's good that he has played his whole career here, and I will certainly be sad when he plays his last game.
