NEWS Sam Walker signs with Roosters

Keary? Your joking? He was a Souths junior and had already won a premiership when he went there. Should we give them credit for Cronk’s development too?

You could react like that or you could take the time to consider my previous points and agree or disagree.

Just to clarify further, I’m not talking about who these guys were juniors for, I’ve already said that.

I also said I’d argue very poorly about Keary but here are the reasons:

Keary was basically on the scrap heap thanks to the Crowe stupidity. He wasn’t playing well when Souths let him go and since going to the Roosters, he has actually won the GF as best player on ground (I’m not sure if he won the CC) and has gone on to play for his country and would have played for NSW if not for concussion this year.

He has well and truly been outplaying Cronk almost every week too.

Again, a poor argument but not one just being thrown out there to troll with no thought behind it.

I completely agree with B4L here. Keary had been hyped up since before his first grade debut, displaced John Sutton from #6 (which sounds easy to do but he had a mortgage on that jumper), and was going extremely well for Souths. He was already in talks for future Origin contention, in fact, the "Queenslander that has to play for NSW" thing was already well and truly being talked about while he was still at Souths.

The Roosters saw him as a ready-made replacement for Maloney, not someone that needed to be developed.

Isn’t that the Roosters M.O.?

Buy the team you need for the now, discard them when something else better comes along.

I didn't accuse you of trolling so I am not sure why you are even mentioning that. He wasn't thrown on the scrap heap, Crowe fucked up and there would have been multiple clubs that would have signed him if the Roosters didn't get there first with their unlimited cap. He has continued his gradual development at the Roosters like basically any decent player will, but to claim that the Roosters have 'developed' him is ludicrous.

Pearce seems to have gone up a level after moving to Newcastle, but it could be because they pretty much built the team around him. He's probably the only half in the NRL that isn't tied down to one side of the field. He's always everywhere, and has Ponga as his left side 2nd receiver and whoever else is playing as the "5/8th" on the right. The whole split halves thing has been killing genuine halfbacks, but Pearce has been allowed to play as one.
Anyway, you don't see teams built around one player as much now - it's probably only him and Cam Smith that it applies to, but in the past it probably used to be more common. Broncos built everything around Lockyer, Cowboys/Thurston, Knights/Johns etc.

Pearce changed his game in 2017. After their shocking 2016, Robinson changed the structure at the Roosters and had Pearce and Keary play like a traditional 7 & 6. That's why the Roosters were maligned in the opening half of 2018 because Cooper Cronk was essentially being shoe-horned into the Pearce role without being allowed to play his natural game. They changed things up and brought in Victor Radley to help take the burden off of Cronk.

What Pearce has shown is that independant of the star-studded Roosters, he's still a quality talent in his own right. I don't think that's ever been disputed, the problem with Mitchell is that he gets the yips on the big stage and usually needs somebody else (eg. Maloney) to get it done. This purple patch of form is hardly new, he pulled off similar efforts in the back half of 2013 and 2014. It's just a matter of whether he can perform in the finals when it matters.

Something tells me he'll never go missing against the Roosters, no matter how big the stage is.He's holding a grudge.

It didn't go so well for him in their first encounter. He did well last time, but then again he was up against Brock Lamb.

I think we can safetly say that Brock Lamb isn't holding any grudge what so ever against Newcastle.
