BRISBANE coach Wayne Bennett has enlisted the help of Australia’s top sports psychologist known as “Dr Phil” in a bid to kickstart the Broncos’ premiership campaign.

The Sunday Mail can reveal Queensland-based sports shrink Phil Jauncey was the secret weapon in Brisbane’s 32-8 thumping of the Roosters at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night.

With Brisbane searching for answers after a patchy start to the season, Bennett summoned Jauncey, who is regarded as Australia’s leading sports performance psychologist.

The Broncos coach has a long association with Jauncey, having used him intermittently during Brisbane’s golden age when they won six premierships in 14 years.

Jauncey has an unrivalled portfolio in Australian sport, previously working with AFL’s Brisbane Lions, the Queensland and Australian cricket teams and Australia’s Davis Cup tennis side.

The mental-skills expert was also a psychological consultant to the Queensland Academy of Sport, the Australian Institute of Sport and various Olympic sporting outfits.

Now Jauncey is back to help the Broncos, meeting with the squad to work on their self-belief and performance levels in the lead-up to the Roosters clash.

The tactic paid instant dividends, with Bennett admitting his players stopped “second-guessing themselves” as they attacked with renewed confidence to post their biggest win of the season.

“Phil Jauncey came in to see the guys and he had a good chat with the players,” Broncos assistant coach Jason Demetriou said.

“He recognised some of the guys’ personality traits and what works best for them.

“It was a good session for the players to think about each other and what makes them tick.

“I thought we played a bit tight against the Bulldogs (in their 10-7 loss the week before).

“We didn’t play any football at all and we were disappointed in that.

“We just wanted the guys to play with confidence, play what they see, and I’m really pleased we did that (against the Roosters).”

Bennett sees the benefits of sports psychology.

Last year, during Brisbane’s Origin slump, he summoned little-known Joe Wehbe, a performance coach with the New Zealand Rugby League.

Wehbe ran alongside Broncos players at training shouting pearls of wisdom such as “Trust the ball”.

He still works with several Sydney NRL stars, including Tigers trio James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Aaron Woods.

Former Broncos skipper Darren Lockyer worked with Jauncey at Red Hill and believes he will have a positive impact on the squad.

“Phil helps you with your approach to games and the way you process things,” Lockyer said.

“For me, Phil would say focus on the process, not the outcome.”

i for one am estátic to her this. Getting a players head right for the is arguably more more important than his body. You could see a few players at the club were struggling, particularly Hunt and milford, but probably quite a few more. Hunts game seems to be on the up and milford looked alot better on the weekend. A coach can only do so much with these things a bennet does more than most.

What happened to Joe Wehbe?....And who was he? I thought he was our secret weapon.

Gems such as 'trust the ball' didn't appear to be working...

The amount of secret weapons we have, makes me think WB could have a cameo in the next bond film, as Q.

Apparently he worked with Parramatta a fair few years back, I'm guessing maybe during Kearney's tenure as head coach. Maybe he's the one who introduced him to Bennett.

Jauncey is great, he specialises in personalities and how people react. He is great for the Bulls and Australian cricket because he breaks people into groups- mozies, thinkers, analysers etc.

For example for a Mozie like Hussey who likes things fast and happening- the Bulls would slow everything down and take as long as possible to do everything while he batted. Hussey had his worst record against Qld.

Waugh was an analyser so Phil would tell the Bulls to put a random fielder anywhere- just have him thinking why?

Very interesting guy.

call me a sceptic or a non believer, but fairdinkum!!
these lads are professional's, if they need someone in their ear oustide of the coach, staff or family to play their best then they should take a pay cut.
next we will have a dream catcher and voodoo doctor in the sheds speading fairy dust and telling our boys to run hard and tackle hard.

Well if the coach wasn't getting through, can you really blame the players...

Sorry but that's ridiculous. A coach that claims to not need any help is in big trouble. Bennett has always got outside help. Jauncey, Gibson, Bax, Monie and Massey have all been involved when he has needed them at Souths or the Broncos.

Sports psychologist is hardly a witch doctor. Alf would speak to Phil all the time and Bennett would get Phil to pop into training to chat with him if he knew Alf needed it.

why is it ridiculous??
i didnt claim he didnt need help, can you tell me how many staff wayne has around him now excluding this guy?
why did alf need it?
if the players have mental issues i have no dramas them seeing a psych professionally.
next off the rank will be the hari krishners in the sheds at half time giving a rousing speech
