I've been trying to think today, has there ever been a time where a Broncos player was sent off? I can't remember one time where it's happened. I've seen many 10 minute sin bins, but can't remember an actual send off.

Does anyone have any recollection of a Bronco being sent off?

Ben Walker Round 1 1999 is the only one that comes to mind.

Lewis in Round 2, 1989. Forearm to the neck on Glenn Ryan.

I know there have been more.. Can't quite think of any others apart from the one BP pointed out.

But there haven't been many. We've had quite a few sin bins.. But not many send offs.

Gordon Tallis SOO

He was actually sent off for the Broncos as well in Round 6 1998.

It was a for a high tackle against Manly after he had already been binned. It was a miserable evening for the Broncos, but if memory serves there was a feeling of 'get square' from the officials. The two had squared off in the season opener, which the Broncos won 22-6, but the only thing the media was interested in talking about was the 17-6 penalty count to Brisbane. Among those penalties included the dismissals of John Hopoate and Geoff Toovey who were sent off for dissent in the last minute of the contest. It was the first Manly game Bill Harrigan had refereed in 3 years, and his credibility was called into question. Hence, 'Bronco Bill' which he was known as for years.

In the follow up game, Steve Clarke was in charge and the Sea Eagles won the count 13-4.

As you can see, the NRL was an absolute mess in the beginning.

Kerrod Walters was sent off against Western Suburbs in 1991 for punching Graeme Wynn.

Good to see nothing has changed in the years since.

And I maybe wrong but I think that was a game we really need to win to make the finals in 1991 and it came to bite us in the ass, in fact we were a win or draw away from making the finals and we lost by a point.

Then there were clearly multiple other scenarios and/or games that cost us. If you're not in the top 4 you're pretending

Oh definitely, The Broncos were so up and down that year that it truly was disappointing that a competition point kept us out after an impressive 1990 season. Just to give you an idea a win would have had us in 4th position and a draw in 5th it was that tight from 2-7 that making the final 5 was much harder then the top 8 has even been. You could actually argue the loss against the Dragons in round 17 was the more costly given we went on to win our remain 5 games, including a 44-6 belting of 3rd place North Sydney. Being in 5th spot in the current 8 teams system is different to the current one IMO, you didn't have half the teams in the competition those top 5 teams really deserved to be. Anyway I was just giving a bit of backstory to the match, it was one of a number that season that really came back to haunt us.

there were a handful of games that cost the broncos a shot that season, including the 17-16 loss to Wests when Kerrod Walters was sent off .. They finished that season with five straight wins most of which were by pretty big margins.. They beat all of the teams that made the top 5 that year, including premiers Penrith and grand finalists Canberra - twice. They also hammered Norths (who finished the reg season 2nd or 3rd) by around 40 points in that late season run ... I think Wayne Bennett was quoted as saying that season was a real missed opportunity and he felt that team could've gone places if it had made the finals.

Anyway, they certainly made amends the following season ..... and the one after that !

IIRC back then only 5 teams made the finals .

And the Broncos won the premiership from 5th spot in 1993. Something no side had ever done prior to.

Yeah that pretty much sums up my reply post mate, the side had the potential to win it that year, as proven in the next two following years but in reflection you can argue they came out of 1991 a better season from that experience as fustrating as it was. I remember Bennett saying in 1992 that he was convinced they would win a premiership that year in a match against the Panthers in Penrith. The Panthers needed to win to remain in the running for the finals, it was raining, we were well positioned and could afford to lose, but we won in a tight finish. The sort of game the Broncos were famous for losing.

Ah true. Didn't realize the format was so different back then! My bad

I'm pretty sure that Wendell got sent off for fighting in a game down in Wooloongong against the steelers, so must have been mid 90s. I'm thinking maybe 96? Also have a feeling Alan Cann and Gene Miles might have been sent off at some stage.

The Tallis & Walker send offs:

Good call.
