Something Special

Locky's 34 now. Let's take no chances in getting him to the end of the season.

and he is lifting that Trophy icon_thumbs_u

Well definitely rest him for Cowboys then, he always seems to get injured in that game up there.

I don't agree with this, and if this is the attitude he keeps using, especially if we have a few loses, all it's going to do is make moral in the group worse, not better.
I agree with it. He is making the young players accountable for the loss. Sure they are inexperienced, but he is actually trying to make them believe that they should be good enough to win these games without the big guns, which they obviously are because they came so close. If he said that he expected to lose and that he was happy with the competitive loss then that would reinforce to the players that they aren't on level pegging with teams like Melbourne. By demanding they step up to the plate and not settle for second best, it is making them rise to the next level and become confident in the fact that they can compete with the best. I'd be surprised if Griffin wasn't privately very happy with how the team played against Melbourne, but he is just letting it be known that we shouldn't get caught up in the great performance because in reality they still lost. I agree if we have a few losses and the players lose confidence his attitude could have an effect, but I really think he is letting the players know that they are definately good enough to win these games without their stars

It all depends in which way he brings it.
It's not about making them think they're not good enough, but actually make them believe they are, if they work hard enough and fix a few errors here and there.
What I can't see the advantage of, is telling them... Oh well, you tried hard, nearly got there, but it's okay, nobody thought you could win it anyway.

I know which one would make me go that extra 1% in the next game!

Totally agree Porth.

This kind of performance may of been acceptable in 2009 and 2010 but this is 2011, most of this squad has been playing first grade for at least two seasons now and we can't continue to make excuses for them. It's time to treat them with the respect they deserve and criticise them as if they're regulars. Mistakes were made on Saturday, it was disappointing and Griffin had every right to bring them to the fore-front.

it's the culture and spirit in this team that is special..

You called it, Beads. I even think they're winning over the Sydney crowd because they're a happy group of young kids who are fun to watch. Well...maybe not "winning over", but there is certainly a lot less hate than usual.

there isnt the 'ego' that the people down south used to try hold over us. the young blokes are just out there playing footy for each other and loving it. you can see it how excited they get to see their mates score a try/etc.

What a difference one year makes. We were a rabble last year, both on and off the field. In-fighting among the coaching staff, clearly an unhappy side.

I would have to say it was a ballsy decision to sack the coach three weeks out from the start of the premiership, but it was one of the best calls the club has made. Paul White appears to be doing a fantastic job and best of all, unlike his predecessor, you barely hear from him in the press, unless it is warranted.

Yep, White is the right man for the job.

Gus reckons we are certainties to win the comp next year. Hopefully he's right.

I am on that wagon also. I think once Lockyer goes the kids we have will realize how good they really can be.

i must say, for some time now i've been really looking forward to what happens when locky is gone. dont get me wrong i love locky and i think he's retiring at the right time. exciting stuff to finish this year and exciting stuff next year too.

Yeah. When Alfie went, I was worried. When Kevie retired, I was worried. We didn't seem to have what it took to replace those guys.

While we don't have a player to replace Locky, the team as a unit is so strong and united that I don't think we NEED someone especially brilliant to replace him. Hunt (preferably) or Norman should be able to slot right in and we won't miss too much.

But, let's enjoy the next 3 weeks (hopefully). I have a feeling we're in for a thrill ride.
