Speed of the ruck this year. Is it too fast? Your thoughts

exactly.

the best way to slow down the ruck is to hold the ball carrier up/work them over while standing for the maximum amount the refs will allow minus a second, then push them over and do the same on the ground. no hand on ball needed, no coming up with the leg.

Which is why I want referees to call held earlier. If they call held and then the defender throws them on the ground, penalty.

The holding up concept is very apt and if you limit the time in which refs call held you limit the time you have to make an offensive offload. Doesn't really affect the Broncos, they have no real offload game. I am all for a shorter held time but how do you judge when to call?

They could try using the written laws - as soon as forward momentum is stopped. So if the player isn't moving forward, or is being pushed backwards, call held.

I haven't seen that in so long I figured they changed that.

It means a faster, more open attack oriented game so I'm happy with it. Shows how the game has progressed from the 80's and to some extent the 90's where it was very defence orientated. For anyone who watched the Australian Super League season was the tackle count 0 to 6 other than 1 to 6?. I've got the Super League grand final and noticed something like that, i also noticed the scoring team restarting play and the american numbers.

Yep, 0 tackle and it was great. Defusing a bomb and getting tackled the second you hit the ground shouldn't count as a tackle IMO.

This is so true! It would move the game further up the field and increase excitement in the game. Stupid NSWRL.

and then you'll have a spate of penalties for passing the ball after being called held.

I don't mind the ruck being slowed down a touch. To me sometimes it looks so messy when you have either the ball being played off the mark or players trying play the ball even before the tackle is complete. Half the time the ball isn't even being played properly.....

The penalties will decrease once the players know the limits.

Same as stripping......anyone caught with a hand on the ball is an idiot..

It's a low percentage play where the benefits are by far outweighed by the disadvantages.

No because they changed that a couple of years ago so that if you pass as the referee calls held they just call it back to play the ball.

Won't this slow the play down anyway?

Well yes, but that'll be initiated by the attacking team anyway so it's their own fault.

Regardless though of who's fault it is ......as mentioned, it will still slow down the play.

Kinda defeats the purpose .

Yeah, but how often does that happen? It's not like it'll happen every tackle.

ive seen it happen maybe half a dozen times since it was introduced at the start of 2012 (i think it was then?). its not a regular occurrence.

not regular yet. if they shorten the held time it may be happening more frequently for a short adjustment period I suppose

Storm V Bulldogs tonight. Heaps of late off loads....by both teams.

If the refs were calling held earlier we would have seen a lot of stoppages....

Fourex is right there. And how about that game? Doggies V Storm. I thought both teams, particularly the Storm slowed the ruck down a lot! The number of times players were locking up the ruck and slowing that ball down was ridiculous. It seems the best tactic is to squirm but not have the equivalent of grand mal seisures in the ruck.
