OFFICIAL Staggs extends

These days, most clubs don't seem to need gun centres. With all these freak Fijian wingers, you just need someone who can pass them the ball and defend well, and you're all set.
Dunno there is something quite appealing about having a strike center that can finish off almost any chance within the 10m.

I remember when we had Israel in the centers and they would literally just throw a crash ball inside the 10m and he'd score.

You need some sort of strike power on your edges that can manufacture tries from very little... nowadays it can be your second rower, center or winger.

The bonus of it being your center is if they have an ability to setup their inside or outside man as well as finish themselves.

I'd say it's also easier to get the ball to your center in space rather than your winger (who is pretty much entirely reliant on the inside men giving them the ball).

Centers have gone out of vogue somewhat because the media think they are the lowest paid position on the field... but a great center becomes a defensive anchor on your edge whilst being able to finish off attacking threats inside the 20m and feeding the support players around them.

They're worth their weight in gold when you have a good one that the team then use correctly

Try telling Jack Bird that centre is the lowest paid position.

Surprisingly, the best centre pairing in the comp over the last 2 years combined salaries was probably just a shade over what we paid Bird (Latrell & Manu $400k each to Birds $700-$750k)

This is where the Roosters find themselves in the predicament that they have to pretty much double Latrell’s value to keep him and they have had to pay Manu a decent upgrade. Shows you had good they had it value wise with their centres.

With the lack of interest in Bird because of
his current salary, there is a possibility we might be able to resign him for less next time around. But we all know the year he comes off contract will be the one year he stays injury free and kills it raising his value and interest again.

Melbourne Storm would respectably disagree; their wingers literally do nothing but stretch the defence....its the centres and edge forwards who score all their tries.

Im happy with the extension; makes little sense to have both him and Bird come off contract at the same time, cant assume they both want to stay, they both may leave...so this extension puts a stop to that, although its a low percentage outcome but still..

Not sure that Melbourne were actually the best example to make your point there.

Their Centres have been good/great at times (Chambers) and bog average at other times (Cheyse Blair, ahem) but they've consistently had at least two pretty exceptional Wingers for several seasons now (Korobiete, Vunivalu and Addo-Carr)
