Dunno there is something quite appealing about having a strike center that can finish off almost any chance within the 10m.These days, most clubs don't seem to need gun centres. With all these freak Fijian wingers, you just need someone who can pass them the ball and defend well, and you're all set.
I remember when we had Israel in the centers and they would literally just throw a crash ball inside the 10m and he'd score.
You need some sort of strike power on your edges that can manufacture tries from very little... nowadays it can be your second rower, center or winger.
The bonus of it being your center is if they have an ability to setup their inside or outside man as well as finish themselves.
I'd say it's also easier to get the ball to your center in space rather than your winger (who is pretty much entirely reliant on the inside men giving them the ball).
Centers have gone out of vogue somewhat because the media think they are the lowest paid position on the field... but a great center becomes a defensive anchor on your edge whilst being able to finish off attacking threats inside the 20m and feeding the support players around them.
They're worth their weight in gold when you have a good one that the team then use correctly
