OFFICIAL Te Maire Martin Signs Three Year Deal with the Warriors

If he gets the brain issue back, is he allowed to be medically retired if it happens again?

"Player had no similar injury or medical condition to that area of the body that either has or could reasonably be predicted medically to lead to a degenerative condition of that area of the body prior to signing his last NRL contract"

I would say no, it's pre existing before he signs the contract.

That goes against the concussion and head injury protocol though. The current concussion rules allow him to medically retire if need be - irrelevant of existing or pre existing.

both off contract end of 2023;

here is our current movements for the end of this year

One bloke there i defonitely would be re-signing would be palasia. A good young prop with plenty of further develoment left.
Id love oates and farnsworth to stay but from what i gather they might already have one foot out the door.
I think only one of walters and turpin is necessary and i lean to walters for his versatility.
Walters, kennedy, palasia and martin would be my keeps.

Sounds to me like something they'd definitely use as a clause if Papenhausen was to retire due to concussion, but it would be denied if a Broncos player ever had to do it.

If both Herbie and Oates leave, which combination do you go with?

1. Cobbo
2. Pereira
3. Staggs
4. Mariner
5. ??

1. TMM
2. Pereira
3. Staggs
4. Cobbo
5. ??

So either way, who takes Oates' spot?

Good luck passing the pub test if the NRL refuse to allow medical retirement on the basis of a head injury.

To me TMM has recovered from his previous injury and been given clearance by the doctor to return... I would suggest his slate has been wiped clean and therefore a reoccurrence should be treated as a new injury.

That may not be how their wording allows it to happen, but if they refused it there would be significant negative backlash from the community (not just league, but outside the sport itself)... it would likely cause significant reputational damage.

It would be like a guy retiring due to cancer, making a return after it's gone into remission from treatment, but the NRL refusing to allow medical retirement if it comes back... the shit storm rained down on NSWRL HQ would be massive.

If we lose both we likely need to go to market.

1. TMM
2. Mariner
4. Opacic (?)
3. Staggs
5. Cobbo

Or if Cobbo is ready for fullback

1. Cobbo
2. Periera
4. Opacic (?)
3. Staggs
5. Mariner

It is important to be realistic given the injury history. @BooKhaki asked a legit good question. This is also a reason I would be using club options for maybe the second year but definitely the third.
Yeah I think and hope this is something the Broncos look into before offering a long term deal, it might seem heartless but as a business it needs to be done. Obviously it's worst case scenario, but the club should take that into consideration. It would be interesting to hear from a specialist in the field regarding the likelihood of it happening again.

It has no implications for him, if he was denied a medical retirement he can still retire he still gets his money it's just on the cap- it really only hurts the Broncos.

The payout of salary to player is negotiated between club and insurance company, is completely separate from the NRL and their decision. If NRL approves medical retirement insurance company can still deny; means club has to payout salary but exempt from cap.

On the flip side to that argument though we could give him a decent 2 or 3 year deal and his form could fall off a cliff. Then people will be complaining about that. I think we give out contracts too easily and thats why our cap is a mess. If he isnt prepared to wait after we have given him this lifeline then so be it. I wouldnt even be looking at it for another 5 or 6 games minimum.
Yeah I totally get that too, it's just not an easy situation. Your post that I reacted to said 'near the end of the year' and I do think that's too long, but agree that it's too soon to pull the trigger on a new contract this week too. Not opposed to 4 games and then assesing.

Me too man, me too. I want him to be a one club player but this is hypothetical and possibly likely as the club does not seem in any great rush to re-sign him.
I think the case with Oates would be he 100% wants to stay and the club knows this so if they want to resign him they don't need to rush it.
I honestly could not see him playing in different jersey for another club.

After the last few years I doubt anyone is lining up to throw big dollars at a winger who gets run down by a lock forward.

I like Oatsey - he's in the best form of the last 3-4 years - which coincides with contract time funnily enough. He'd need to stay for unders.

I'd actually prefer to throw Oates money at Herbie to stay and shift him to the wing. If he can't pass left, make it so it doesn't need to. He's got a MUCH higher ceiling and a lot longer left in the game.

Does he want to play wing though? He’d be great outside Staggs.
