Chelsea have signed Russian international Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow for a reported £18m fee.

The 25-year-old left-back, who has played 28 times for Russia, came to prominence during Euro 2008 when the national side reached the semi-finals.

Zhirkov, who can also play in midfield, has joined on a four-year deal.

The Russian utility player is Chelsea's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Ross Turnbull and striker Daniel Sturridge.

During his time with CSKA Moscow, Zhirkov helped the Russian club win the Uefa Cup, scoring the second goal in the 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Zhirkov flew to London on Sunday and underwent a medical before completing his transfer.

TBH, it's probably a good move for him. He'll be something like fourth choice and play in the easier games where he'll probably bang in a few goals.

Just disappoints me to see one of our former players who had such an influence when he was at the club, playing for them.

Owen is a selfish prick. I won't forget what he gave Liverpool as a player but to be honest he fits nicely in the United jersey, scum.

Growing up, he was probably my favourite player, so i don't feel as strongly about it as some others. Anyway, here's the general idea:

- When Owen left in 2004, it was after countless promises to the fans that he was going to sign a new contract and he wanted to stay. He said something along the lines of 'these things take time' whilst also continually stating his desire to stay. Rafa came in and he didn't even give him a chance and left for an extremely cheap fee because he had run his contract down.

- Then towards the transfer deadline back in August 2005, it was between us and Newcastle to sign him seeing as things hadn't worked out at Real Madrid. Rafa was willing to take him back but we couldn't match Newcastle's offer so we asked him to request that he will only join Liverpool OR wait till January 2006 when we would have the funds to sign him. Being a World Cup year, he wasn't willing to do either and took the move to Newcastle.

- Now he has joined our most hated rivals. He was considered one of our finest strikers and to join the Mancs leaves a very sour taste. Dalglish, Rush, Fowler, Gerrard - none of them would ever consider joining Manchester United. In fact in his interview the other day after signing he said 'deep down he had always hoped he would get a chance to play at Manchester United'.

If he's not crocked by the time the scum come to play at Anfield, he is really going to cop it.

^^ What nnn said, and no thanks. I'd prefer him not to come to Liverpool. We need to move forward, personally I think Owen is past it and think it would be a massive step backwards.

If he's not crocked by the time the scum come to play at Anfield, he is really going to cop it.

If Tevez coundn't get any premier league game time, owen has no chance. I'd say he'd be behind Wellbeck and Macheda in the pecking order.

Agreed ronny. Also, I fail to see the logic behind the blind hatred towards Owen from the liverpool fans. His days with pool are long gone. He's had a really shitty time since his knee gave way and he probably didn't expect to end up at a big club next season after all the injuries and lack of form. In his situation, to get an offer from manchester united would be surreal. I'm not the least bit surprised he signed with them.

That strikes me as a horrible deal. Eto'o and Ibra are pretty similar in terms of their worth. Ibra worth 40m more than Eto'o? I certainly wouldn't have said so.

Yeah but Eto'o would have left for free next year and he wastes so many chances, I think Ibra would score and create a tonne of goals at the head of Barca's front line. He has had to do plenty of work himself to score his goals for Inter and Sweden but for Barca they will be handed to him alot of the time and for that reason I think he will carve, plus he is younger and desperate to win the Champions League.

He's only like 6 months younger, so don't really see that as being too significant. I also thought Zlatan was off contract at the same time too, so you could basically have got him for free when Eto'o left for free (Thus saving 40m)

Nope Ibra is signed til 2012 and that is basically the reason for the giant fee aswell as the player swap. In the end Barca will be better with him than than they were with Eto'o so I am more than happy for them to have shelled out this large sum.

Wow, as much as i rate Ibra, i think Inter will be extremely happy with this deal.

I think Inter will regret it, they have no truly creative players and Ibra creates many of his own chances. Eto'o doesn't create his own chances and with no one to feed him like he had at Barca I think he will be a bit of a flop for Inter unless they sign someone that can put him in front of goal like Messi, Iniesta, Henry, Alves and Xavi have done so often. Ibra is the target man Barca needed and he has the ability to pass and create, I think he will make Messi, Bojan and Henry even better players because he is the type of guy who gets others involved and makes other players play and look better.

Penny come on! Eto'o pisses away some many chances! I love the guy to but if we had have had a more clinical finisher this season like Ibra, Villa or Forlan they would have scored far more goals than him. I love the way he works hard defending and plays the Barca system well but he isn't as good as Ibrahimovic and doesn't have the big frame or creativity he will bring to the front line. I predict he will score more and create more chances that Eto'o did by a long way. The club probably paid too much but at the end of the day I see it vastly improving the side.
