The Ninth Immortal

They should just release the other 8.

Proven, Coote, Messenger, Irvine, Meninga, Lockyer, Smith, Thurston.

Agree 100%. It's a disgrace the way the NRL has let the hall of fame slip into ruin. I'd much rather them amp up the Hall of Fame and quietly put the Immortals concept to bed.

I don't think the concept should be put to bed necessarily, just used more sparingly. In the coming years we're going to have Thurston, Smith, Lockyer and who knows who else inducted. For me, to reach "immortal" status it should take longer than 7yrs to be eligible.

Not a bad idea but Smith and Thurston should have to wait the 5 years like everyone else.

I think we're all forgetting the top contender.

Palmer Waupau.

I think Meninga. Bevan played in England but was he English? I think the current criteria is only Australian Test players are eligible.

He was inducted in the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame so it's likely he will be eligible.

However, he only played 8 games in Australia and all of his achievements were overseas so I can't see him being considered.

It was a joke when Johns was allowed to jump the queue. Any relevance it had was gone. Not saying he didn't deserve it but there were guys mentioned here who have been retired for decades who should have received it first.

Here's a good article from Mascord explaining some flaws with the whole concept: http://www.theroar.com.au/2015/10/16/mascord-everyone-care-much-immortals/

Would it surprise you to learn the Immortals began life as a RLW promotion to sell wine? Only in Rugby League could something like that become so revered and venerated.

omg that article says Shaun Johnson isn't eligible. What a farce.

Agreed. But then I think Thurston and Smith should have to do a lot of things like everybody else. Like not rorting the salary cap (sorry, I mean playing in games exempt from the cap), not being belligerent to refs.

Basic stuff.

Hehe.

I think the point he's getting at is that no NZ player is eligible - no matter how good they are.

Has there been a NZ player in the history of the game that could stand in their company?

The influx of Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand players would only increase (you'd think). Maybe the criteria should be modernised. Maybe that's what the NRL is planning.

The Immortals should be a 13 man team of the absolute best. If someone is better they replace them and they move back into a Rugby League Hall of Fame

Strongly disagree, Daniel Vidot has to be next in line.
His Samoan lineage might give him a better shot at the WWE hall of fame. Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure he will be arriving at NXT Developmental soon

Norm Provan is not as marketable as some of the other options.

I doubt he will be the next Immortal. The NRL will likely want to go with someone younger, someone that most people today would actually know.

Like...JT.

I reckon the whole Team of the Century should be made Immortals, as a start, then go from there.
