The NRL has no money

They are too greedy to just pull the plug temporarily.

I'm sorry maybe I'm missing the obvious but why can't they just suspend the fucking competition for 6 weeks or something, what exactly is stopping them? The players can't play in summer? boohoo, play all night games for the last 6 weeks to make up for the bit of extra heat.

What would be hilarious though is if they do extend it and the season runs past November 1st and a player who is signed for somewhere else next year signs (Like Addo-carr inevitably) has to play the grand final with his new team since all NRL contracts run Nov 1st->Nov 1st.

Money.

The NRL don't have any. They don't have any assets, nothing. They are relying on government handouts.

As if they couldn't negotiate a 4-6 week pause with broadcasters. It makes no sense. I'm not proposing removing 6 weeks of the comp, just postponing.

To be honest, things will probably get worse in 6 weeks time anyway.

Yeah **** I don't know, it's a fucking mess, I've never seen anything like it in my life. This is going to make the GFC look like a walk in the park if it continues to escalate.

That's what I'd say if I was the NRL too. Try to get fans spending money out of sympathy and\or scaremongering that NRL could be over forever if they don't support the game financially even though there's no matches being played.

It's actually one of the smartest moves they've ever pulled, bordering on genius. I can't imagine who in the organisation came up with it.

I'm not sure saying you're broke is a smart business decision.

It might get a few diehard fans forking out more money but the people they are trying to attract, the ones with real money, well they would likely run in the other direction as fast as they can.

I think the idea the talking heads had on 360 regarding the ANZ Stadium redevelopment money is probably the best way forward. The NSW State government can't do without Rugby League, they will agree to terms to downgrade the stadium design then return some cash into the NRL's veins. It's essentially Socialism for the rich which makes my blood boil, but the health of the code is at stake.

This gives the added justice of rewarding Sydney's shit crowds with an appropriately basic concrete bowl of a Stadium.

That's the thing, there's nowhere to run to. Every other Sport is at a standstill too remember,
The tactic has been employed under extraordinary circumstances. What exactly is a smart business decision considering the possibilities of no product for an uncertain period of time?

Yes, where are ours? Or is it such a failing product they don’t want a bar of it?

Well we don't have a population of 360 million to support the code and turn them into billionaires

JOEY JOHNS WANTS NRL TO LET WEAKER CLUBS DIE

Andrew Johns has called for the NRL to let weaker clubs die in coronavirus crisis.

The pandemic has put an immense ammount of pressure on clubs financially and there’s fears some may not survive it.

The eighth Immortal has said before that the competition would work better with just twelve teams.

Speaking on Wide World of Sports’ Freddy & The Eighth, Johns said the current situation could end up achieveing that result.

“The worrying thing for me, I was thinking last night in bed, was this year I could see a bigger difference between the elite and the poor club, the clubs that were struggling,” he said.

“And when we come back (from the suspension) the gap is only going to be bigger and bigger and bigger between the wealthy clubs, the strong clubs, the clubs with the best players, and the teams that are down here.

“The stronger will get stronger and the weak will get weaker. I’ve been saying for a while that I think the best number is 12 teams for the competition, I think if you look this year especially, I think the stronger teams, the teams up the top, look far superior to the teams down the bottom.

“How we do that? I’ve been saying for a while, only the strong survive, maybe this forces the hand.

“If you have a look at the juniors, there’s less kids playing, for whatever reason, whatever you want to toss up. Not only rugby league but sport in general.

“So we’ll always have the elite kids coming through but there’s less numbers. So I think 12 is the best number, how it happens I don’t know.”

I bet he wasn’t including Newcastle as one of the teams that don’t survive.

I assume by ‘thinking last night in bed’ he meant stumbling home high as a kite this morning.

haven't agreed with Johns for a while ... but i like this. it would also allow a proper home/away draw ... with each team playing each other twice.

possible 12 teams

1. Cowboys
2. Broncos
3. Titans
4. ??
5. Eels
6. Roosters
7. Rabbitohs
8. Panthers
9. Knights
10. Warriors
11. Raiders
12. Storm

Paul Kent has been on his soap box about this money thing ... talking about mismanagement of funds etc by the NRL ... but what he has failed to mention in every one of his rambling ranting articles is that the NRL immediately need to spend more than 50% of the 1.9 billion TV rights deal on club grants (mainly thanks to having to prop up the poorly run Sydney clubs)

And? It doesn't make him wrong. They had **** all in the bank due to decades of horrible, horrible mismanagement. They're useless *****, and the sooner fans stop making crappy excuses for this shit **** administration, the better.
