NEWS The Third Coming of Wayne Bennett

New CEO Duncan Donuts isn't ruling out the third coming of Wayne Bennett possibly as coaching director or culture boss. And the players are right behind him. Not only that but the Voice of Brisbane claims it can name more than 10 players who've told their managers they'd switch to Brisbane‘s second team if Bennett is coach. For now, it's keeping those names a big secret, but let's hear what these Broncos have to say:

Corey Oates

“If Wayne was to come back it’d be awesome. Everyone would think the same thing. Wayne’s name speaks for itself. I know it was tough when he left in 2018, but that’s not on us, it was with everyone upstairs. Personally, as a player, I get along well with him. I really enjoyed having him here and everything I learned from him.

“It’s just his experience, knowledge and history he has with the club. That’s what the Broncos have been missing. With ‘Kevvie’ the passion has come back. They’d be a great combination together.”

Still has it

Matt Lodge:

“He is still one of the best mentors in the game. He made me feel like I would run through a brick wall for him so he clearly does something right. I don’t know it would work with two people running the show, but I’ve always respected Wayne and he did a lot for me. The older I get, the more I appreciate what he did for me letting me come back to the game at the Broncos. I definitely felt the love when he was here, he stuck up for me a lot, whether that was media criticism or the off-field stuff I was going through."

“We definitely have that connection where I played for him and played hard for him. He would be a great person for some of the young guys we have here. I don’t know who runs the show or does what, but if Wayne came back to help Walters, I guess the Broncos have to put that business plan together.”

Tevita Pangai Jnr :

“I’m really close to Wayne. We still keep in contact, he has always been a great mentor for me. Kevvie is doing a great job here and he reminds me a lot of Wayne in the way he treats people. Kevvie is getting the best out of me. Even though some results haven‘t gone our way, he is holding me accountable.”

Payne Haas:

“Wayne brought me to the Broncos and he has been a massive influence on my career. My dad actually wanted me to go to Melbourne, I was about to sign on the dotted line, but I got a call from Wayne at the last minute and he brought me to the Broncos and I haven’t looked back since. If he came back, it would be pretty cool, I know several of the boys would love to have Wayne back around, but we‘ll see what happens.”

Tom Flegler:

“His resume speaks for itself. I haven’t heard a single thing about Bennett returning, I find out most things through the media (such as the articles penned by award winning senior sports writer Peter Badel), but it would be great to have him back. Look at what he has done. He is a great coach and I’d love to play under him.”

Yeah that was the debatable part - but he clearly got more out of us than pies could.

No doubt you’re right but that’s an epic example of damning by faint praise. I’m not sure that any coach could limbo under that bar. I’d pay plenty to see Wayne’s reaction to being categorised as being better than Seibold :-)

If Wayne's job was to develop teams for other coaches to succeed with you'd probably be right to say he's fucked up.

But that's never ever been his job. His job is to get his team to perform to their maximum ability. Whether he's done that is debatable sure, but he's definitely gone close everywhere he's been.

Teams falling away after he leaves just proves how fucking good he is....

Souths next year is going to be the only one he's actually had a say in the succession plan, and we all know souths are going to decline. They're losing their fucking captain and half back whom WB told souths to keep. but yeah sure they finish 6th next year and it'll be Waynes fault for salting the earth.
This was a reasonable argument until you started making excuses for Souths next year, well before 2021 is even over.

Let’s just see what happens next year without planting the seed 6 months before the season starts as to why it’s not Wayne’s fault if / when his succession plan starts to unravel.

The massive flaw in any argument against keeping Bennett was that there was no one better available unfortunately. Bellamy was never coming and management should have known that, he’s played them how many times before?

I get chasing Seibold as a consolation prize but he was a rookie coach who looked good, that’s it. Pushing out a father figure and club pillar for an upstart in hindsight was always going to end in tragedy. Offering a six year deal was too stupid to believe.

I was very much for moving on from Bennett but absolutely not in the way the club did, it was disgraceful. They should have at least seen out his contract, absolutely abysmal the way they went about it all.
That's the thing though, you sure as **** didn't need hindsight, at the time Sproj to know it was a poor decision.
This isn't a told you so moment for me because that's pointless but I remember at the time asking what was the primary reason for change.

The obvious answer was improvement. So making the finals was the standard, the bar. WB was achieving that with the squad he had, at the rates they had and with contract lengths known and established. Seeplod HAD to match at least WBs performance level in order for it to be 'a draw' on whether it was wise to replace him.

Quite a few of us knew replacing WB was a terrible decision but we also felt we didn't know everything and we were hoping to be wrong with our pessimistic outlooks.

Exactly. Should have kept Bennett. Or at least tried his secession plan. Oh well. Looks like walters isnt too bad. Hoping he brings us back.
I would like all the posters who said WB finishing his contract was 'untenable' to explain exactly why. I sure as **** couldn't find one at the time!

How is he wrong in what he has argued? Develop the counter argument that St George, Newcastle and the Broncos have gone on to sustained success after WB left the club?
St George had decades of mediocre results before WB and had the same after he left. That means they weren't worse off after him. If you set a fake standard, his time actually in the job then yes, they weren't as good after but that's not reasonable.

To judge if WB left the club better or worse you MUST compare their before WB and after WB.

Before WB they didn't have a GF win, after WB they did. The club was light years ahead after WB especially if you assess it based on rep players, financial success, memberships and sponsorships.

That’s a good point, but you sort of ruined it with your previous post, quoted above.

It’s a fantasy to think you can replace (at least statistically AND over a long period) the second best coach of all time (Bennett) with the best coach of all time (Bellamy).

But if we did, what happens when Bellamy retires? Do we get Robinson? Then what?

I think it sort of goes without saying that whoever replaces Bennett won’t have the same credentials. Realistically, it’s pretty much impossible.
Agree with the overall point, but you have the bolded bit the wrong way around

lmao. I love this. Hear that @Huge? You’re stupid because you’re old.
Hear what? I have no idea what you're talking about. Remember, I cannot see at least 20 odd posters comments so like an unsighted person I cannot see how ugly a thing is.

Unfortunately I don’t.

Only including coaches that have more than a few years experience; statistically, Bellamy sits at close to 70% win rate, Bennett sits at around 62%.

I was wrong though, as Robinson is second best with a 65% win rate.

Although, Robinson has the best premiership strike rate, with 3 premierships in 9 years (33%). Bennett has 7 in 33 years (21%), which could increase to 8 in 34 years (24%) if he wins this weekend. Bellamy has 3 in 19 years (16%).

Obviously, Bellamy’s win rate does include all the games during the * years. But his premierships are not included.

Someone with more time, skill and resources could probably put the figures together excluding those years, but that ain’t me 😂😂

If you take out the cheating years (06 to 09), Bellamy is at 68%. The Knights dragged Bennett's stats down lol. Although looking at just clubs by themselves he's at 69% with souths (better then his 2 stints with us).

And then there is origin, Australia, etc.

Edit: and maybe premierships with 3 different clubs coming up..

Yeh, I chose not to focus on clubs specifically, as that widens the net a bit more and would then include Cleary, who is quite a bit above 70% with Penrith (mkII) from memory. I don’t think it is particularly fair to compare blokes with 9-33 years experience against a bloke who is less than 2 years into what is an unusually super successful tenure with Penrith (and also a statistical outlier).

That said; you’re preaching to the converted, as I do think Bennett is a better coach than Bellamy, but only when you consider the breadth of his achievements against the very specific conditions under which Bellamy has tasted success (I posted on this recently with respect to Bellamy having no success across 3 consecutive years with NSW).

And that is why I made my original statement “statistically AND over a long period” (as well as the fact we were only discussing coaching the Broncos, so it was inferred that extra curricular coaching duties were omitted), because then opinions can be removed from the equation.

In that context; Bellamy and Robinson are better than Bennett.

But anyway, this is a massive tangent and wasn’t really my original point. I was more so commenting that, unless we could poach Bellamy (or Robinson), we were never going to get a coach that had anywhere near the credentials of Bennett, so at some point it was highly likely we would have to bite the bullet and take a risk.

We did, it failed spectacularly and we are still paying for it.

Today's Bennett vs Broncos article by Badel is about the letter sent to him by Karl Morris informing Bennett that management wanted him to remain at the club as part of an "elegant transition" into another role at the club.

it is this correspondence that Badel said started the civil war and was the driving force in the Bennett's quest to win a premiership with South Sydney on Sunday night.

now, i'm not a fan of Karl Morris, but in this instance he was right. not to mention that something like this isn't new to Wayne Bennett ... how many players has Wayne tapped on the shoulder over the years, telling them their time is up, starting with the King

Morris should have got out of his own way and done what Wayne wanted. We’d probably be gearing up to play on Sunday.

unlikely ... we would've been on the end of a week 1 thrashing as had become the norm

I think the Broncos intention was the right one, we had to transition from Bennett and in many ways we haven't achieved that yet. They got it wrong by the ham fisted way they went about it. Sending a letter for a start instead of a face to face meeting was just ridiculous.

Bennett to be fair to him has always said he wanted to be a head coach and trying to shoehorn him into a role he more than likely had no interest in was never going to work.

I dont see souths doing as well next year but i dont think it will be Waynes doing if they flop. He wanted to keep players they have let go, especially Reynolds but Souths as an organisation seem to be sticking to this policy of 1 year deals for older players. Be interesting to see what they do with Walker if they dont do so well.

Wayne seems to have a lot of faith in JD, and his record in the game as a head coach or coach is pretty good so its now or never for him really. I think if they can finish top 6 that will be a pretty good year for them in all honesty.
