The Wayne Bennett Super thread!

Don't get me wrong either, I was as happy with the win as anyone but those type of comments really do nothing but add to the silly Bennett back and forth that germinates a lot of threads.

Moving right along, did anyone read the latest round of news on the Courier Mail website?

Apparently Wayne has told Hodges to trust his team-mates more and limit his involvement.

I agree with the change. One of my biggest complaints with Hodges is that he'll try and do too much and ultimately he'll limit our options since he'll take himself out of play on a key tackle. This gets the most out of everyone.

I think we should be fair to an extent, it was a pretty entertaining style of football we played, it's hard not to get caught up in that, it exaggerated the result but it's what we want to see more of. Big Pete there are two things I did take away from it that are positive.

1. The involvement of the spine, it was great to see Hunt absolutely killing it last season, but that was a problem in itself of sorts, we were too reliant on Ben Hunt to get us home, Hoffman and Barba were ineffective too frequently too often in attack, I don't blame Hoffman so much, playing him at 5/8th was a dumb idea and I felt and still do that Barba has issues that run deeper then just carrying weight. Kahu, Milford, Hunt, McCullough and Nikorima all featured in our attack making it harder to shut down our attacking options, that is what we need to see more of.

2. Bench rotation and general balance of the players on it, never felt right under Griffin I have to say, I like the bench we got at present and the rotation we are currently going with for the most part. Nothing annoyed me more then seeing players on the bench who were brought into the game too late, too short or not at all.

The second half was a bit concerning in terms of conceding points, but less in an attacking sense then I felt it was like last season, while we didn't score as many points as we would have liked in the second half, I still felt the side were still looking for them and not in the cruise lets just wind down the clock mode we usually would fall into. An area that needs to improve but I think we can.

What Bennett has done to the side is yet to be determined, but that goes both ways, we shouldn't rush too quickly to make an outright assessment just yet.

I definitely agree with the second point and highlighted the bench rotation as one of the positives of the performance against Souths. Admittedly Bennett got it wrong on the night, he admitted as such but the intent was there and I definitely think it's something he should be commended for.

I was just thinking this morning how the Captaincy has made Hodges think a bit more of the team. It's not like he's previously been thinking selfishly, he's just been backing his instincts in order to nab the win, and to be fair, I don't have enough fingers & toes to count the number of times he's won us games single-handedly in the dying minutes. I guess since this is the Bennett thread I can suggest it, so maybe Hodges trusts Bennett's coaching and the game plans that have been implemented more than he's trusted previous coaches & plans?

Do people seriously think that we didn't play like that ever in the last 6 years, or that that was the best we've played since Bennett left?

I know, I know, you don't want to hear that the opposition made us look better than we were, but come on........the cowboys were atrocious. Absolutely deplorable. Schoolgirl defence, rookie mistakes. The fact that they still put 22 points on us says more than the fact that we put 44 on them. Souths or the roosters wouldve put 90 on them.

We also didn't carry on with it in the second half. It was like 32-6 at half time, and we only got to 44. They out scored us in the second half! Yet ive seen people carrying on saying we are "back" and it was a powerhouse 80 minute performance lol.

Last years game against the knights was much better than this game in terms of performance.

Oh and I've seen everyone talking milfords performance right up, putting him up near motm lol. He got a single line break assist in a game where his team scored 44 points!! That pass was good and all but it was a simple draw and pass, not some super magical example of why he is a five eighth. He wouldve decimated the cowboys had he been returning kicks against that pathetic defence.

Maranta, well what is there to say lol. Absolute nuffy. Pin the ears back and run boy! That break was an absolute joke to watch, he did everything but try and score. The second he was through the line he was looking around trying to pass it to someone. Kids gotta go. Then on the other side he got shown up for pace by Ethan Lowe. He blitzed away from him.

Oh and I saw someone mention 2011 in here - 2011 was statistically our best year ever. Better than any Bennett coached season. Sure we may not have put 6 tries on in one half very often, but we were a force to be reckoned with and got the wins on the board.

Everything I have read has Bennett making the right noises, choices etc, and when he does get it wrong ( round 1 bench ) he puts his hand up. We have Milford being told to play deep, run the ball, attack and play both sides of the field, Hunt and McCullough being told to make the calls, Hodges and the experienced players being told to trust in the very young spine we have and not over rule them, Thaiday being told to shape up or ship out, Glenn getting a rocket pre season and playing great, Blair getting a rocket when he needed it, long term stability in our halves, Nikorima getting told to up the tempo of the game when he is one and run the ball and take advantage of the tired forwards, our defense is a lot better...... I am enjoying this, the club is heading in the right direction, it's great, even Maranta has lifted

Biting my lip. You're arguing against things that no one said. Making up stuff so you can fake outrage. Leave it alone, most people are happy that we've shown improvement over the 3 games, nothing more.

Yeah the first and last bits were for somewhere else, I took them out it was more of a brain fart than anything else, on here has been refreshing and I'm finding myself here more than other places.

Cowboys were terrible and are so deflated of confidence it's not funny. JT is JT, but he's one man. The rest of the Cowboys backline is just shit. Which makes them predictable.

We didn't smash the Cowboys into submission by any stretch.

When Taomololo crashed over early, you could see there was a pressure release valve from the Cowboys and a feeling of dread among the Broncos group and the fans. Here we go again.

No try, next set piggy back penalty, then Hunt beats 3 defenders with a dummy. 12 point play.

No problem, Cowboys replied quickly with the Moga bomb. Marginal call, no try.

Next set, or thereabouts, McGuire walks through Tamou. 2 close calls vs 12 points on the scoreboard.

Broncos then have Kahu dropped ball off first tackle inside 10m and then Maranta dropped bomb resulting in 90m linebreak and try. Next 8 minutes was a pure capitulation by the Cowboys - some individual brilliance (the Milford pass was unreal in any context) and some just down and out shit play from the likes of O'Neill and co.

We got the bounce of the ball against a very out of sorts Cowboys. The game could have gone the otherway so easily. The positive is that we actually managed to score 2 tries in the second half and bounced back from a bad start to the second half.

Grapes are a little sour in AP's world.

Ps your comment about 2011 is bunkem.

2011 - 24 games, 18 wins, 6 losses

cf

1992 - 22 games, 18 wins

1996 - 21 games, 17 wins

1997 - 17 games, 14 wins

1998 - 24 games, 18 wins plus a draw

This game was never going to be won by the Cowboys regardless. Broncos exploited the defence of Thurston and Morgan beautifully.
Thurston was terrible and a significant part of our win. You must have been watching a different game to me if you did not see Thurston missing so much in defence.
I do agree in that they have a dud backline

We are potentially 5 days away from finding out if another of the pro-Bennett crowds predictions is proved wrong.

FTR, the prediction I'm talking about is that Lowrie had played his last game for the club, because he wouldn't be selected by Bennett.

Well, Bennett has named him 18th man meaning he could potentially play this week.

Who made said prediction and where?

Why does it matter if Bennett plays him?

I feel this is very relevant.

Who made said prediction and where?

It is somewhere in the 122 pages of this thread. (or one of the many other threads dedicated to the subject

I remember it as it was in response to ne saying something along the lines of get used to seeing either Lowrie or Stagg in our lineup because Bennett loves those types of players

Who were you expecting to come in if we have an injury?.
Oates is on the wing, Gavet is injured, Blair is playing prop, Garbutt is a prop, so is Wallace and Joffa is already on the bench.

It was the Anti Bennett crowd that were saying Lowrie/Stagg are Bennett type players, yet not one of them has played a game yet Wallace, Joffa, Gavet, Nikorima, and Whitchurch have all been played ahead of those 2.

So because his named on an extended bench because of a potential injury concern after 3 games where neither players featured, suddenly that means we are going to have to get used to him being there on a week to week basis when full strength basis so far has suggested otherwise?
