The Wayne Bennett Super thread!

Could it be a height thing? Lockyer was a bit taller, so probably better to get advice of a shorty like Walters instead?

Milford is the same height as Lockyer though? And Slater.

I dunno. I was asking to try and find a reason why someone would turn down advice from someone such as Locky.

What makes Wayne Bennett great - NRL.com

The title of 'coach' is seemingly a throwaway; honorific, rarely given a second thought, used to label those who give instruction to a playing group.

Seldom do we think about what being a 'coach' fully entails. They teach a group skill and tactics but what can be easily overlooked is that, principally, they are teaching human beings.

There is an art to dealing with people and no coach understands that more than Broncos mentor Wayne Bennett.

Bennett's return to Brisbane, with some tinkering of the roster, has transformed a side with sporadic form that was lucky to have made the finals last year into the benchmark of consistency and one of the competition's genuine chances in 2015.

This comes as no surprise to recently retired Cowboy Brent Tate, who entered the NRL in 2001 under Bennett's tutelage.

The pair have been close ever since and Tate says it is that "comfort" between a player and his coach which is likely the reason for the rejuvenation at Red Hill.

"The boys are probably comfortable, I would imagine," Tate told NRL.com.

"Wayne's got that wonderful ability to give you that level of comfort in yourself, that's his greatest attribute.

"The boys probably aren't looking over their shoulders, worried about their spot in the team. They're all really comfortable with their positions in the team. They know that if they play well they will be in the team and if they don't they won't be. He makes you work hard.

"I've been coached by some great coaches but Wayne is definitely the best man manager out of all of them, hands down. I think it's what Wayne's been blessed with and I think that's a big part of why he's so good – he's always got an answer for everything, whether it's life, money, relationships.

Whatever it is Wayne manages to have an answer. He's been blessed with wisdom, Wayne, and he knows what to say at the right time."

On top of Bennett's reputation – built over almost 30 years in the coaching game – devotees like fullback Darius Boyd are a living, breathing testimony to his managerial acumen.

If a player with the status of Boyd holds Bennett in such high regard, his teammates are likely to follow suit.

Bennett's positive effect on Boyd has been well chronicled recently and stems from Bennett's ability to relate to players.

Following his appointment at Brisbane, the NRL's oldest coach was labelled too old and out of touch.

At 65, Bennett is almost 20 years older than the league average for coaches (46), but with that comes unrivalled experience in both the game and life.

"He's had a pretty full life himself, obviously with kids and his upbringing. He's just a wise man who has been around a long time. He's just a wonderful, wonderful person. I love talking to him and spending time with him. It's probably why he's able to help players like Darius," Tate said.

"He's taught me some life lessons and principles back when I was a kid that I still carry with myself and often use even today. He probably makes you a better person than a better footballer and not too many people are able to do that, that's for sure. And more often than not, when you become a better person you become a better footballer."

No game illustrated Bennett's influence more than last Sunday afternoon's shutdown of Melbourne where hooker Andrew McCullough equalled a club record with 64 tackles as they fended off 11 goal-line dropouts and kept the Storm scoreless in the second half.

After ranking seventh in defence last season, the Broncos are now top four defensively and have set up their run home well enough to implement a rest rotation for veterans during Origin, with Sam Thaiday this week sitting out after Corey Parker earned a break last week.

The Broncos are back at home on Friday night when they face the Newcastle Knights.

Sir Bennett, we salute you. No coach will come close to him for at least 30 years.

Please, can AP come back ?.......it was so entertaining and frustrating reading his dribble ! He was always able to find the negative even if it didn't exist. I can't help wondering how he would have responded to articles like the one on the previous page or what failure of WBs 2015 he could dream up. Really though, I just wanted to say, suck shit AP...you are wrong and you were wrong about him coming home to the Broncos

Mate TBH, I'm surprised i didn't cop an "i told ya so"

I was also wrong and very vocal about the decision to bring him back.

The former.

As enjoyable as this season has been, it will count for little if the Broncos get knocked out in consecutive matches in the finals.

I also think it's a poor reflection to bad mouth somebody who has been silenced. I get it, AP was a big part of the community but it's time to move on.

For me whether we win a premiership isn't the biggest indicator of Bennets success during his return stint. So much had to fall in place to win one, all you can hope for is to play consistently enough that you have chance to be the lucky team.

In my opinion, Bennets legacy will have more to do with decisions he makes with player retention. We have such a large pool of potential at the club. So many young players here are looking like they could be anything and with positions being limited he has a huge job in front of him. I can't remember us ever having as many selection headaches at the Broncos, we are spoilt for choice at the moment.

Oates, Joe O, Kahu, Copley, Parcell, Taylor, the Nikorimas, Anderson, Hunt, Milford, etc etc. all these players look to have huge potential and what Bennet decides to do during his time here will greatly effect the future of our club.

We can't keep them all. I can't imagine how hard it will be to predict who'll be the better long term players and who we can let go due to lack of opportunity. Do you chose Kahu, Copley, or Reed and who do you let go? Will Hunt and Milf kick on or will they platou while Taylor becomes a superstar? How do you fit the Niko boys, Parcell, and Macca into one team?

It'll be very interesting to look back on this crop of players in 5 years to see whether Wayne made the right choices or if we'll have some regrets. We couldn't ask for a better man to have during this time though.

Re: Wayne Bennet's 2015 Team Line Up

I hope I'm wrong, but I think that a lot of the WB enthusiasts may be in for a bit of a shocker next season...

However, I still hope that the Bennett we get, is still the master coach with all the smarts and ability to use the best players we have at their best.

There is no way in the history of... ever, that Boyd should get a spot in our 17, unless Hoffman throws another tantrum when he's put where he belongs ---> Wing.

If our backline is not something very close to the following, I will throw B4L off Suncorp's tier 5 stand. :thefinger:

1. Milford
2. Hoffman / Kahu
3. Copley
4. Hodges
5. Vidot
6. Barba
7. Hunt

This is wrong enough to make preparations to toss this pelican off the roof, when would you like to dot P, next week against the Storm or halftime of our first semi?

At least on the way down B4L will know he was 100% correct in his WB support.

Now you ruined it. I wasn't going to tell him until he was on his way down...

Bloody oath I was right.

And how am I the pelican?

This thread is filled with retroactively hilarious posts.

Just came across my 'James Tedesco > Ben Barba ' post.

Never again.

AP 277 posts and hasn't been sighted in 155 days.

Gotta laugh at the "Bennett should only be coaching director" hive mind we all subscribed to in any thread discussing Bennett.

A lot of us thought we had a team that wasn't playing to their potential and that all we lacked was a new coach, a few outside signings and an x-factor player.

To get it all working in year one is so satisfying.
