time for 2025 Teams List

If Shibasaki is in does that mean Mariner to wing and Arthurs out or vice versa - Arthurs is more consistent but Mariner has that extra something??
Mariner may be another one of those that has been promoted to NRL too early.

He's only played 22 games of Qcup and that was spread across two seasons, so last year was his first full year of football week in week out and he was playing a new position on the wing.

I think he would've benefited playing in Qcup last year, but the FOMO and decision to bring him straight into NRL means it will be seen as a demotion if he's sent back there now.

Wynumm uploaded a "high intensity" game against the Broncos to their instagram...

Broncos seemed at full strength. Didn't see much of the middles in the photos but the edges gave some insight.

Looked like shibasaki and gojewski were in the team, with mozer and reynolds playing with red bibs (so mozer likely rested while carrying a niggle for at least this trial).

I might be in the minority but I don't hate the above. Both are solid defenders. I don't give a shit if mariner and piakura score a try each a game if they let in 3. I just hope Shiba has improved his hands. We need a couple solid players and walsh, cobbo, staggs, mam, hunt, or reynolds, even haas or carrigan or mozer, can break the game open. We don't need game breakers anymore. Mariner can be 18th man for a bit until he take some tough carrier out of our end and focuses for 80 mins in defence, and piakura can provide the same 3 or 4 great line runs from the bench until he learns to focus for 80 mins in defence as well. Earn it.....

Noticed Ashley Klein was reffing that opposed session too

OK ,,, so who is the best defender ?
That would be the point of difference . I believe Smoothy is the most skillful but doesn`t show it .
When he started in 1st grade he did an amazing offload around behind the tackler to set up a try . Never seeen that move again . Why ?

And unless Mozer ups his tackling game he isn`t even on the bench .
He got exploited twice by Uncle Wayne and the Flippers for tries in the middle of the park . Didn`t look like the next Cam Smith in that game .
Dunno. I'd say probably not Paix but then I've hardly seen him play since he was out of the team. The only thing that separates the 3 is that Smoothy has the best pass imo.

Who is the guy middle of pic at the rear ?
Marty Taupau is there Jensen too . Aaand Billy . Willison away at All Stars .

Even though he isn't currently under contract, I suspect we'll see Shibasaki at left centre sooner rather than later.

Cobbo wing
Hunt five eighth
Carrigan prop
Paix hooker
Gosiewski second row
Hetherington lock
Piakura off the bench

The other changes from last year.

How do you see this playing out? They'd have to put him on a development deal as that is all they have left.

Firstly, he has to get through the trial. If those pictures are accurate, then Shibasaki will line up on the left-side which makes Gehamat's assignment slightly less difficult since the Gold Coast tend to target the other side.

If he can get through both trials, I expect we'll see Shibasaki's name in the 24 man squad for Round 1.

When people start asking questions, his name will pop up on the development list and that will be that.

I'm not sold on Shibasaki being on a development list, I know Rogers and Smoothy got a gig that way, but I didn't love that either.

To me Shibasaki is a classic trian and trial insurance, he's with Wynnum stay there and we might need you after R11.

It all comes down to where Madge rates Delouise Hoeter. I get the impression that he's below Shibasaki on the pecking order and I'm not convinced that Madge views Mariner, Karapani or Arthars as viable options at this stage.

If things go according to plan, I'd expect an announcement on the Broncos website that Shibasaki has been signed till the end of 2026. 2025 would be the dev deal, 2026 is where he earns NRL money.

although his hands let him down last time, he is a known defender and "talker" which is what is needed

even though we lose some speed, combinations will be better which means the one off individual tries will not be the main ingredient, better team cohesion will be

If Shiba gets a run it's a bit of an indictment on the roster that none of the centres on the books can beat out a guy whose career looked just about done.

When was the last time he even played NRL?

his biggest strength is his defence - multiple others have noted this on this very forum and other forums.

They have ALSO noted he is a butter fingers, but hopefully this if fixed and is balanced out with "team defence" which comes from working with those around him - this has been lacking in Mariner so far
