Tom Dearden Discussion

so a player playing rep footy is how we determine if a player is decent or not ... interesting.

Well going by your logic the Andrew McCullough must be better than solid as well ... after all, he has played for QLD

Yep. Macca was regarded as better than solid. He has excellent stats. But he failed to impress at the state level and the team improved the less he played. Kodi shone at the international level, and has established himself to the point the Warriors sought to buy him.

I think kodi has been good as an individual but has a major flaw in his game: kicking. Because of that, he has been forced to play second fiddle to Milford who can exploit a hole in defence, but not make one. We need a genuine play maker in the side, and with time hopefully that will be Dearden.
I think even the most optimist of us struggle to see the broncos knocking off the major teams of the NRL from this point on (barring a game of diabolical standards by them), and to be honest from here on in that shouldn't be our goal. We need to look at team selections and training to a build up to a 2020 season shot at the title. For the first time in our clubs history we will find ourselves no chance of competing for a title shot before origin. That should be a sobering thought to everyone who watched the events of last year.
Some of you wanted the team to sacrifice a season to increase the chances of a title shot. This is how it is. Those rosey numbers for crowds will start to drop off and we might lose a couple of sponsors, but if we win next year they will come back. If we limp into the 8 next year though, there will be some major problems, not just with siebold or the team, but the club with it.
It will be interesting what happens from here on in, and I think the team needs some asbestos pajamas, and the fans a lot of patience to get through it.

Yep, Kodi's kicking game is woefully underpar for his station and so is Milford's for that matter. Dearden seems like he has the skillset you would expect from a halfback, but we haven't yet seen whether he has that extra magic that set players like Langer, Johns, Thurston, etc apart from the ordinary.

Tanah Boyd looks like he has a decent kicking game. I hope he gets a run somewhere in the team before the season is out.

Milford's kicking game "woefully underpar (sic)" ?

Are you serious, vision impaired or simply delirious? His kicking game is, and has been excellent.

I'm sorry, absolutely cannot agree that we can't knock off anyone on the day, we most certainly can. Any team that takes the Broncos lightly will get kicked, no doubt in my mind. We aren't far off, I know I've said it before but if we don't have the evil bounce go against us and get an even shot we can beat anyone anywhere. Up until that fucked up bounce for the Souths first try I thought we were more than matching them and was thrilled we came to fight but those quick tries fucked us. That won't happen every week and we can start winning soon. I haven't lost hope of sneaking into the eight but if we lose the next two even this optimist will concede.

Problem is when those quick tries happen we drop our heads and concede the game. Not good enough.

Can't agree with that at all. His kicks rarely amount to anything. How often does he get repeat sets and 40/20's? How often does he chip and regather? How often does he grubber and regather? Maybe you're young and don't remember Ricky Stuart:

Yep, he's just lost the last remaining shred of credibility he had after that comment.

We saw his kicking game against Souths. It amounted to kicking to the left hand corner and hoping they'd drop it. It never worked once.

That for mine is one of Seibold's main challenges now: to instill self belief and mental toughness in the team. As the saying goes, when the going gets tough the tough get going. We don't ... anymore. Needs to change ASAP, and will be a measure of exactly how good a coach Seibold turns out.

What I did like about Dearden was his chase on Reynolds in that intercept try - kid showed heart, determination and wouldn't give up. Exactly what we need.

I'm 66 and remember everything, including Milf's generally quality kicking game.

Obviously a coach's gameplan thing. His long and shortkicking improved greatly last year. Remember Hunt was taking most of our kicks when he was here.

Then how could you think Milford has a great kicking game? I mean, he's definitely improved to the point where he's passable, but his kicks rarely trouble anyone or amount to anything. Everyone in my house was yelling don't bomb to the fucking corner again, and sure enough he kept doing it.

F.ck me you do realise the bombs to the corner are a tactical kick for territory to trap the opposition into a corner and use up 2-3 tackles to get a roll on

Every team does it and we have been doing it since Bennett's first reign here with Lockyer

I'm not averse to blaming the coach for belligerent tactics but I still think Milford's kicking game is relatively weak. I bang on about Ricky Stuart because he was genuinely threatening. His long kicking game was substantially better than Alfie's, while Alfie's short game was the best we've ever seen. They were two great, but very different kickers who bothered everyone.

Hard to say who I'd rate higher. Stuart would wear you down and make all those yards you gained from one-up running look like a waste of energy and lack of creativity. Langer would bust the line open and score.

Milford just looks like he's getting rid of the ball because that's what you do on the fifth tackle.

Kicking to the corners is a gameplan that almost all teams do.

Field position paramount, hoping for a mistake from the attacking team.

Milford is carrying out the coaches orders.

Yep, and we saw how effective it was against Souths.

Fire the coach.
