Milford is leading the comp in kick metres by a fair way (as he did last year), equal fifth in the league for forced dropouts, well down the list for kicks dead and set up a number of tries from kicks this year. Not going too bad.

I'm sorry, absolutely cannot agree that we can't knock off anyone on the day, we most certainly can. Any team that takes the Broncos lightly will get kicked, no doubt in my mind. We aren't far off, I know I've said it before but if we don't have the evil bounce go against us and get an even shot we can beat anyone anywhere. Up until that fucked up bounce for the Souths first try I thought we were more than matching them and was thrilled we came to fight but those quick tries fucked us. That won't happen every week and we can start winning soon. I haven't lost hope of sneaking into the eight but if we lose the next two even this optimist will concede.

I hope you're right and I'm wrong but that game was against team against forwards who underperformed and should have been put to the sword but instead thrashed us, as we let them gain field position from our mistakes.
It is not that I think we are not capable of making the eight but that we are persuing tactics that seem to have been made for a very different team to ours.
Big forwards should not be expected to run a smaller pack into the ground, without majority possession. Change that and you may be right. If not, I fear the worst.

Are you serious, vision impaired or simply delirious? His kicking game is, and has been excellent.

Milford has been bombing way too much this season. His spiral bombs have been shanked quite often too. Last season he looked to kick to the corners

Problem is when those quick tries happen we drop our heads and concede the game. Not good enough.

This is very true, but it is a function of the youth of the time and a lack of leadership that causes this to happen.

Completely agree with this. Also, the 2019 broncos now are a victim of their own hype in many ways. Not only did it inflate their unwarranted egos, it has also caused teams to turn up against us - revved up by the hype the young pack gets, or on their toes because they were getting talked up in preseason. Put this together with a few bad bounces, a young team with their head hanging low in confidence, and the toughest start to a season draw out of every team in the nrl and ffs its turned into a disaster. This does not, however, excuse a lack of effort at times. That is inexcusable and pisses me off, I don't give a **** about the difficulty of being in the position they are in

To be honest, I haven't seen the lack of effort that so many others can 'see'. The only really poor effort I've seen was Roberts effort to stop the 4th try the other night. That was terrible although some of Milford's efforts certainly qualify as a lack of effort. It was just that Robert's stood out, I don't know why but at other times he tried hard. Perhaps I'm being unnecessarily harsh on him. Like everyone else I'm disappointed but I just can't bring myself to boiling over with anger status when talking about individuals or the coach. I truly feel that the guys in the team feel gutted too and I don't believe the money makes any difference, I think they are hurting too.

The boys will get there and hopefully with effort like Deardens they’ll accelerate the repairs needed

I am glad he stayed but wow, giving up an opportunity to work under Andrew johns (even though we all agree Alf is better) and Cooper cronk? I mean look how it has improved keary's game. Hopefully Alf, locky and Scotty Prince can mentor him to help him and the other young halves excel.

I have a feeling he won't need much help. I see several have said how coachable (is that really a word?) he is and I'm sure he'll listen but I bet he's a video analyst and probably already has plans to play Origin etc.

I am a little baffled.

We have been calling for one of young halves to be blooded for the last 2 years and that kid was Dearden. We let Niko go on the basis that Dearden was going to fill that hole, He only played 5 games this year and we knocked off the premiership favourites, Manly in top flight and also the warriors.

Now all of a sudden we want a new halfback. Surely he is our man and we invest in an experienced 5/8 to mentor him for a year or 2.

Or do we shift Milford back to 5/8 and use our money to buy a premier fullback like Papenhuyzen, Ponga, etc.

Milford has one of the best pressure bombs in the comp (if not the best) and can run rings around players when he isn't expected to do the organising.

I think we would be better of utilising out funds on a fullback and retaining Fifita and Oates.

What am I missing?

I think finding an adequate fullback and putting Milford back at 6 will be easier than the other way around. I was happy with how Dearden went in his few games. At worst he was more than solid in defence on a side that has leaked points all year.

Still not sold on Milford at 1. Granted no pre-season and he had no halves, but he’s played 5 seasons at 6 and now has to get used to fullback again when he should be moving to the next level as a half when you factor his age

I agree completely with this, in fact I'd have Dearden as my #7 next year, but I suspect it's a matter of his mentoring. The best halves learn from older, more experienced heads. Milford isn't that, again possibly because he himself didn't have a mentor as such, which would have helped his development. So it's likely the plan is to bring in a more experienced half for a year or two, give Dearden and Milford a better opportunity to grow, and leave them in better stead for the future.

The obvious candidate would be Cronk. But he's effectively zero chance. Maloney would have been good for a year or two, but reportedly wanted 3, which would be too long for the others to want to play second fiddle for. The reason that Pearce was rejected by Bennett, despite seemingly fitting the criteria, is because he's known to be a bit loose and this wouldn't sit well with using him as a behavioral yardstick. As much as I think Chad Townsend is overrated, and certainly not worth the $1 million he thinks he should be paid, he fits the bill. And yes, Keary would also suit as he is versatile enough to play #6 and #7 and is incredibly disciplined.

I definitely agree there. Milford as a running 5/8 with the big bomb and the occasional short kick behind the line + supporting our forwards in attack is now than enough for me. If Bird goes, I would be going after Chambers as a cheaper replacement and trying to hunt down a fullback. I would hate to see Dearden go elsewhere for an opportunity.

Lockyer offered to help Milford out a couple of seasons ago and Milford knocked him back
