Tom Dearden Discussion

McHunt what are you on about? Tom played way above expectations tonight. It was a very solid hit out. And his dummy is awesome. He over exaggerates it which reminds me of someone else...have you seen JT play?

"Solid" was the exact word I used. Unfortunately, we need "superstar." He's replaced Kodi Nikorima, who was better than just solid, but still not good enough. It's a big ask for a kid.

He was great. He should be given control of the team like Cleary was when he came in and showed promise, it looks like he can handle it.

Maybe he could but he shouldn't have to be put in that position with his lack of experience.

Looks to me like it's Macca calling the shots, and that's just to pass it to whoever is standing beside him.

Milford is still a good player, but I don't exactly have confidence in him organising the side. Dearden seems like he has a better footy brain and can read a game situation. Still ridiculously early, and he didn't come in looking like Johns off the bat, but I think he's already more suited to organisation than Milf. It'll allow Milf to hopefully play with a bit less of a burden and rekindle his running game.

Milford is our best player, but a proven failure at five-eighth. We are talking about having a kid who's barely had a run in the QLD Cup telling him what to do. That's desperation.

Seibold has to move him back to fullback and see if he still has it. Fucked if I know who should be five-eighth and hooker. I don't have the answer. I think Tanah Boyd should be given a run, but we can't expect him to be a drop in match winner.

Nikorima in my opinion was not better than solid.

Also what more could you want from a kid under that sort of pressure. He was really as good as can be expected.

Young Dearden had a fine debut. Well done. I realised later in the game that he'd been told to not to go for broke and to play a very contained style of game. It looks to me that by the 60 minute mark he said ,**** this, I'm going to try a bit of shit because the game was a shot duck. I liked that, a bit of Alfie.

If you read this young fellow, don't let Seibold dictate how you play, that's your job. You already know everything you need to know on how to run the show. Set your sights on the captaincy in the long term but from last night on, you own this team. Make it Dearden's Broncos and back yourself with unrelenting faith that you will wear down every obstacle. Don't let Milford try and run things, he's had his shot. Make him just another soldier in Dearden's platoon. If your team mates let you down, be economical with your displeasure, just use the glare and tell them quietly later on that you're disappointed. If you're successful you'll play for Qld and Australia, make the Broncos your springboard.

I don't want to get carried away, but geez he looked comfortable out there. Especially for an 18-year-old playing his first NRL match in one of the most important positions on the field.

I thought the kid did well in his first game. Solid defence, and completed the job expected of him in a debut. Yes he was quiet in attack and didn't kick much but he tried to up his involvement late in the game.

I don't even think we need a spectacular or showy halfback. This team needs a solid game manager/leader to structure our sets, get us where we need to be for our kicks to dominate field position. Look at the 2018 GF. Cronk wasn't as involved in attack much but directed the team and I don't think they would have won without him.

I hope this kid can be the game manager we need, allowing Milford to play eyes up footy, roam, count numbers and call when something is on.

Gday. Good first post and pretty much agree on all of it. It's also nice that the written word is not a challenge for you.

Nikorima has played 13 international matches for NZ, so he's better than solid.

Like I've said numerous times, Dearden had a better than could be expected debut, but the Broncos need more than that standard to turn their season around. It's not his fault.

Yeah, thanks to injuries and having very few options. He was just the back up option when the first choice went down injured.

At one stage there he was partnering Peta Hiku in the halves, that's how spread thin they were.

I don't think anyone expected him to turn our season around. It's about getting the best out of Milford starting this season and into the next few years.

so a player playing rep footy is how we determine if a player is decent or not ... interesting.

Well going by your logic the Andrew McCullough must be better than solid as well ... after all, he has played for QLD
