OFFICIAL Tom Dearden lost to Cowboys

The Cowboys have offered Tommy Dearden a paltry three-year deal worth a mere $1 million sealed with a dubious promise to be mentored by some guy named Jonathon Thurston. According to Dobbo, that works out to be cool $1 million dollars a year, maybe more if you count it in potatoes, but you might want to double check his maths.

Thurston's single premiership pales beside Dearden's current brains trust of Langer & Walters who've each won more premierships than Dobbo can count.

Greedy Cowboys football-operations baron Michael Luck said:

“Now that we’ve got Chad, we haven’t ruled out Tom at all. We would still love to have him here and we believe they could work well together as a halves pairing. He is still coming through and learning the ropes and we think Tom can do a wonderful apprenticeship riding shotgun with Chad and then potentially take over from him and be a long-term playmaker at our club."

“It would be great news if Tom accepts our offer. Tom has shown some things we like, so we would love for him to be here. Tom grew up in Mackay, he was part of our junior academy five or six years ago and then he went to Palm Beach Currumbin (on the Gold Coast) to finish school."

“He has done a great job coming through the ranks during a trying period for the Broncos as a club. I know it’s a big decision from Tom so we will give him time and space. We know he is a wonderfully loyal kid, he has come through the system at the Broncos and if he leaves it’s a big decision for him, so we’re not putting any deadlines on him.”

Let's hear it for Townsville!

Meanwhile local legend Kevin Walters is having none of it:

“Tom is part of our system so at this stage we are not looking outside the circle. We don’t anticipate losing Tom. He has been a good player for us in our systems and he’s still learning the game but we see little bits of improvement in Tom each week and we expect that again tomorrow night from him… no problems there with Tommy."

"We have been through everything with Tommy, he has a nice clear picture in his head about his job in the side and we are confident he can do that job for us (on Friday night) and moving forward as well.”

“If you wear a seven jumper these days you are linked to the Broncos, so that part of it… we are a big club, we are a strong club. It’s great to know other players want to come and play at the Broncos, that’s what it is all about. For us, we have our structures around what we will be doing and won’t be going outside those structures.”

“Adam Reynolds is a good player and there is some interest in him, but we need to tie up Kotoni Staggs first and if and when we do that, we will look at our other scrumbase options."

Mitchell Moses, another rumoured player of interest said:

“I‘d love to stay at the Eels, that’s my main thing, I’ve made that clear to them but that’s up them now if they want to keep me or if my management will sort it all out. When a contract is ready to go my management will let me know.”

“The ultimate goal is to get a premiership. But everyone is different Everyone is in a different situation and different ages, all those types of things. The premiership pact gets tossed around every now and then but nothing in depth. The way footy is at the moment everyone looks after themselves and that‘s how it is.”

Then why is Kevvie coming out saying he is the future of club? Seems strange to me.
Yeah there are mixed signs all over the place, maybe Kev thought that, maybe he wanted to see if Dearden was going to be loyal, maybe he wanted him to perform on field before renewing him. These kids are not wanting to develop, they want to be in the bigs right now. I say let him walk, go up there and prove your worth mate.
I want blokes who actually want to be here, Dearden has not earned the right to just be given the spot and now has shown he would rather not be here or work hard enough to demand attention.

He kind of said that, kind of. I remember quoting KW from the article because I was highlighting the fact that he separated himself from the club when talking about Dearden. To me, it was like KW was told by the club that Dearden was the future and they kind of painted KW into a corner. By that I mean he was obliged to endorse the view that Dearden was the future but I'm not so sure it was genuinely his view too. No matter what happens this year KW will be there next year I believe.

If he can’t make an impact behind our forward pack, he’s got zero chance of making it behind the NQC pack. Good riddance. Throw the money at SJ or Moses with Croft who at least puts his body on the line.
Cronk, Smith and Harry Grant all did time in the lower grades before flourishing in the big league but Dearden thinks he is above that, good riddance.

a quick look on the Cowboys forum and quite a few on there think they'll re-sign Drinkwater to partner Townsend in the halves with Dearden playing in the ISC to develop and take over from Townsend in a couple of years ... lol

he's not leaving us to play reserve grade

He’s their plodder now

A halves spot at the Broncos comes with a massive amount of pressure and expectation, its just too much for a 20 year, particularly right now as we've been so poor for a while.

I think part of Tom leaving is him getting away from that, you can see its effected his performances this year, $1.1Mil over 3 years says to me he is escaping.

Its going to take a player who is very strong mentally to come here wear the 7 and cope with the expectation.

Milf used to be able to but the last few years we've seen how it has impacted on him.

Problem is, any more senior half like a Reynolds would seriously be jeopardising their legacy by coming here.

Correct, so it has to be financially worth their while. Reynolds legacy isn't Thurston or Smith's though, and a million bucks a year might actually be enough to tempt someone like him to roll the dice.

Send him straight to the ISC and leave him there as a depth player. Don't where we are at now with a long term halves strategy. Looks like we will have to pay overs for an experienced half next year. I'm not sold on the Courier Fail line that he wasn't offered a contract. I'd say the Broncos management have said this is what we are prepared to pay for a rookie 7 and Dearden took a much better offer from the Cows and ran. If this is the case I'm ok with him leaving as paying for potential is what got us into this mess.

We need to be into the market for a fullback and also a half that has at least 50 + games experience.

There is probably an argument to be made that we'd actually be advantaging him by letting him get away from us to go and play Queensland Cup and probably win more regularly at this stage.

I would not be surprised if Deardon is released to join the Cows this year, I think we should be looking to swap for Drinkwater.

But it really depends tho what promises we've made to keep Staggs and where he will be playing.

lol yeah absolutely. We’d forcing him to develop properly for a year like he always needed.

Agree with the above sentiments.
Time for Broncos to play ruthless hardball with everyone.
You want a player release, it will cost you.

I disagree, if a **** doesn’t want to be here **** him off and get someone in who does
