That was my thoughts too. He's well past his peak age and level of physical fitness and once that happens, time away from the game can pretty rapidly accelerate the level of match fitness that drops off.

Staying match fit playing Queensland Cup and dragging a mountain of media hype along with him is likely to be one of the very, very small number of avenues he still has left available to him that have any possibility of getting him back into the NRL.
