Most of our issues last Night came from Albert Kelly in the 30 minutes he was on. 2 or 3 knock ons, and one or two kicks giving them 7 tackle sets and some terrible defence. Even the try where Cobbo got burnt on the edge, the 3 on 2 was because of Kelly rushing up and not making the tackle. He was terrible and shouldn’t be anywhere near our starting team. Made too many errors last year too.

when Ezra came on, that edge was terrible. Not solely his fault, but he wasn’t good in his defensive reads and didn’t seem to get too involved in many of the plays. Basically just sat out there. I think he needs another season in Qcup before a call up.

frustratingly, Billy Walters has been our best 6 and also our best 9 I believe from the trials. Given kevvie seems to love turpin, Turpin will play 9 and Walters at 6. Which whilst not my ideal, I’m okay with as it probably is the best play from a defensive standpoint. I definitely Want to see Paix get more game time though as he brings a lot more in attack than Turpin.

as bad as Gamble and his haircut were last night, he has more energy than our entire team combined it seems. He just gets out there shouting and screaming and I think because of that he is such a perfect 14 because he can come on and change a bit of momentum by being a pest and just bringing energy.

The issue with Paix is still stamina and how long he can go with no quality drop- he is largely untested.

2021-14 games at hooker- twice 80 minutes and average of 54 minutes. (10 ISC and 4 NRL)

He has to find another 10 minutes at least. He was gassed for Souths at the end of his first stint- normally Souths rested him just after half time and then had to get him back on because they were leaking points.

His improvement has been massive since 2019 and he's done a great job learning the role but hooker is still a massive problem.

Brenko has to be there. If we've learned anything from the last 2 years it's defence wins game and our defence sucks. We need someone like Brenko for his maturity and defence.

Choo Choo !

1. Herbie
2. Pereira
3. Brenko
4. Staggs
5. Cobbo
6. Walters
7. Reno
9. Paix
Based on trials thus far, 100% agree this should be our backline, even after Niu is fit.

What did Herbie do that confirmed him as FB ?

No one in the trials thus far has done anything to suggest they should be, so he cannot be any worse than them.

What we do know already is that he is a strong ball runner and he competes on everything, so he’s already well ahead of Isaako in that regard.

If it’s not Herbie though, it should be Mead.

I would want to see him catch bombs under pressure and how he links with the 5 / 8 th and centres / wingers before I consider him in a position I haven`t seen him play .
The simple fact he is not known for his passing game means he has to show he can execute one fundamental of the position before leap frogging even Isaako .

My biggest disappointment from the game is that all the players that are fighting to be part of Reynolds supporting cast have been so far below the standard we need.

We're in the position where the least worst player will probably get the nod (Billy)... and the guy who probably had the best form in the trial (Paix) will miss out of the starting side because of seniority and because he's not really ready for starting in first grade just yet.

Even at fullback Isaako is likely to get the nod because he wasn't as bad as Mead, and no one else has been or is set to be trialled there.

It's not a great way to start the year when 2/4 of the spine are there simply because they are the least worst in their position and Turpin gets a jersey because he wasn't as bad as Macca 3yrs ago, I'd argue he is now worse than Macca.

Expecting there will be churn and instability in the spine again this year, because it doesn't seem like anyone wants a jersey there.

Well let’s hope he gets a chance in the final trial to do just that.

That said, I wouldn’t say Isaako has even gone close to demonstrating he can execute the link play. At the very least, Herbie has time to prove one way or another, whereas Isaako has had 5 seasons of first grade to show what he’s got and we’re still left wanting.

then i have to ask if you've watched the trials because Billy and Mam have both done really good jobs.
I've watched both trials.

Mam was great in the first game... started slowly in the second game, but became more comfortable as it went on. I'd not be shocked to see him get the call up for round 1, but I think that would be away from Kevvie's original plans for him and he would prefer to start him in Qcup and pressuring for a first grade call up at some point through the year. Kevvie indicated after the first game that he would get 2 trial games... that suggests he doesn't want to start him in first grade from round 1. If he suddenly picks him for trial 3 then it would appear to be away from his original plans and that would be because Albert and Gamble have completely shit the bed.

Billy has also been good... although Wynnum was against a depleted Qcup team that then put their BRL and development players on (according to BP in that thread). Titans he got the try assist, but that was adlib play that may not be expected at typical NRL level and then the linebreak came straight after a linebreak on the play before, but he failed to get the ball into the supporting players hands to finish it off.

Billy has earned his spot in the side, but to me it's more the complete failure of Albert, Gamble, Turpin, Isaako and I guess Mead, to at least get to the level of a 19yr old that only started playing against men last year and a 28yr old Billy who played a handful of games last year off the back of an ACL injury.

I'd imagine Kevvie would be somewhat disappointed that his choice has effectively been made for him more so due to poor form from others, rather than exceptional form from one.

Mam is way too poor defensively. He was abysmal last night. I was at the game and he looked like a headless chook. Has talent no doubt but he needs some time in Qcup. Billy has been by far the most solid out of the 6 candidates.

What part of cup is going to fix his defence. Nothing. You saw how atrocious it was last week and even in previous years. It might improve the slightest bit but if you seriously think he will be any better (/much better) in 12 months because of defending in cup your kidding yourself. I agree Billy should be 6 but your fucken kidding yourself if you think he will grow that much in cup. May as well chuck him in now and he would grow just as much in 5-10 games next to Capewell than he would a year in reserve grade. If Brenko gets the left centre spot I think you chuck him in and if not you go Billy.

I just don’t think he’s shown anywhere near enough. Did basically no kicking, huge liability in defence. He’s too young and needs more experience. Billy is the better option.

It's called physical development.

Thought he got pushed of the ball a bit in his time with gamble partnering him in the halves,i agree tho at this stage walters should be at 6 but i think mam should be considered for 14 with walters going to 9 when paix blows his wad and mam to 6.
But im a bit of a wind sock could all change after the cowpats game.

Going in to bat for my boy here.

We all know Paix is a good attacking dummy-half, but so far all I see him do is run. Haven’t seen him do anything else

He also shies away from defensive work. Now does that make him ‘smarter’ so he has energy to attack? Perhaps, but it also burdens forwards with doing that work so he has to keep that attack up for him hiding in defence to remain a net positive for the team.

Also, Paix had the fortune of coming on to the field against a third-string side or teams that have been worn down in the past in NRL.

Give him a season or two getting slogged for 80 and I think you’d find he’d end up in a similar situation to Jake, who was the same when he came in over Macca.

It’s funny how no one’s had a go at Paix for getting held up the first time. Guarantee if it was Jake he’d be drawn and quartered on here. Sure Paix did get over eventually - against a single marker in an 18yo defensive line with 5 mins to go in a trial. Any player could’ve scored that one.

No one praised Jake for his constant readiness for offloads and that shoelaces catch-and-pass but hey, people see what they want to see I guess
