TV Rights Worth $1b

IMO the negotiation of the TV rights contract has been one of the weakest areas all of the NRL CEO's have shown. It is time for Gallop et al to really play hard ball and get the money the game is worth

$1b sounds like a stretch. Not surprising to hear the television game is surging in Sydney given the crowds aren't too spectacular.

I think one of league's problems is the fact it is so good to watch on TV, the structure of the game allows a viewer at home to not miss a thing. AFL crowds will always be better because it is SOOOO much better to watch live than on TV, you miss so much in a match watching the TV coverage. I think the NRL needs to add 1 more day match per round on Saturdays because (especially in Sydney) the crowds like the day match and are more likely to go especially in the colder part of winter. Having said all that the NRL really need to get a comparable deal to the AFL because at the moment the difference is unjustifiable.

The current expenses relating to going to the footy are too high for families facing unemployment and redundancies. Lower crowd figures, much like a reduction in retail and tourism is to be expected when people don't have the spare cash to go to the footy. This makes watching it at home a far cheaper option (and the only option for those who live regionally).

AFL seems to be a good game to watch live, but Victorians would watch paint dry if a comp was made out of it.
