IMO, channel 9 is responsible for all of this controversy surrounding the bunker. The footage of video ref decisions, that the viewers see on the channel 9 coverage (and the coverage on Foxsports where the footage is provided by ch 9) is not the same footage that the video refs are using to make their decision.

the audio from the bunker also seems to be restricted to when they have made their decision, but not how they came to their decision.

all of this means that the ch 9 viewers are not seeing the whole picture, only the picture that ch 9 want them to see. Vossy was reportedly going off about this on Thursday nights Fox coverage

Fox sports on the other hand, show the images that the bunker see as well as the audio of them making their decisions.

ch 9 are a stain on rugby league, i wish they would lose the damn rights.

It's nothing new that Nine wants to attempt to shit on the game again. I wish the people making these sorts of dumb shit decisions would come out and tell us how their stupid brain came to make the call.

It's not all Nine though. The bunker has made some pretty ordinary calls.

Maybe I've got a selective memory, but I can only remember two referrals that were howlers.

The Gillett No Try vs North Queensland.

And the James Tedesco try vs Cronulla.

Outside of that the only issue is them getting involved in general play. As Bennett said, it's too inconsistent and even intrusive. Players and coaches are willing to wear the decisions that go against them try line to try line, what they find difficult is the referrals.

I've said it before and it happens like clockwork. It only takes about 6-7 weeks before coaches decide to kick up a major fuss and Gus Gould jumps on board because that's the persona he's carved out for himself. Gus hates the video referee because it's a product of a competition he was vehemently against - Super League.

So far the criticisms directed at the bunker seem to be more about the rules (eg. obstruction), the referees being afraid to use the sin bin or the incorrect footage we're shown. 9 did a poor job the other night, but so has Fox. In fact, Fox has been so bad at times they haven't even shown the correct play. I've seen games where they've shown an irrelevant play in the tackle, so obviously the tech is confusing the producers.

I do agree. But I don't think 9 has access to the exact feeds the bunker uses (as in, it can't just automatically show the same split 4-screen view that the bunker is watching). Unless they literally stick a camera over the operator's shoulder. So they use the best vision that they can grab at the time (with technology that is obviously inferior to the bunker).

That's as far as I'll defend 9 though. They love to **** their whore.

I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to. The fans deserve to know how they come to their decisions. Let them complain, then publicly answer them. Transparency is a good thing.

Completely agree that the fact Nine doesn't show the bunker footage is an absolute disgrace. In all honesty cannot think of their justification to reverting to picking their own angles rather than the bunkers? Giving Gus a pedestal to go on one of his rants perhaps? God I miss Vossy....

As for recent commentary from channel nine, especially Gus, regarding the obstruction rule needing more 'common sense' it is ridiculous. The obstruction rule needs to be as close to black and white as possible. The video refs can't be asked to make a decision as to whether an obstructed defender would have saved the try or not.... If a players obstructed it needs to be a no try every time. It's the only way to make it fair and minimise the subjectively of decisions.
