Want to Own an NRL Club?

Get Rusty on the phone. He loves buying shit clubs that should be kicked out of the NRL!

Sharks will die because they don't have a rich benefactor like Rusty. Neither should still be in the NRL. Neither are huge junior areas and neither has produced anything in the last 20 years to suggest they're a powerhouse in the game or ever will be again.

As bad financially as Parramatta are, that area of western sydney is important to retain a presence and control over their juniors. Maybe merge with Penrith? Ha, like that'd happen.

Souths and Sharks go, and in 5 years or so look at Central Coast and somewhere else.

This clearly demonstrates the Sharks are no longer sustainable. Their fans are more fickle than most and there is no way they will draw a 10k+ crowd to Toyota Stadium if their form continues the way it is. My guess is the NRL is simply waiting for the club to fall over. If as they've said they receive that injection of funds from the development lot adjacent to Toyota Park surely that cash will only go so far. IMO it's only prolonging the inevitible.

Cronulla's problem along with the fact there are too many clubs in Sydney is also due to marketing. As a club they've relied too much on the Shire and haven't marketed themselves beyond that area.

I'll buy it for a dollar.

The Cronulla Loch Ness Monsters...has a ring to it.

group buy anyone. I'll throw in 50.

Mate, i reckon they way the sharks are going, you could get some change back from that 50 [icon_razz1

I just got my stimulus payment - maybe I shouldn't have been so quick to pay off my credit card, I could've got the Sharks cheap.

You could have spent $899 on your bill & had enough to buy the Sharks & had 50c left over.

They should just hurry up and move to Central Coast before Rabbitohs do. They could sure do with $8 million dollars.

Or sell thier franchise to the bears, who change the team to the Central Coast Bears and Sharkies becomes extinct??? CC will get $8million for the move and they should be free to call their team whatever they want if they move them and own the franchise?

CC makes the most sense. The CC public will show up. No matter what they say, give it a season or so and people will be there.

Central Coast Sharks.

IMO the Bears would (should) be worried right now!

Now they are talking to Rockhampton. They can become the Central Sharks :)

Cronulla aren't the only ones in trouble. Manly is another one. They can talk up CC all they like but best choice would be in either Perth or Adelaide, and yes I am aware of the battle ahead if they make those choices. But with a sustainable business plan in place with a time frame of 10 years then it can be very successful. Rockhampton or Mackay are silly choices. Mackay wholeheartedly support the cowboys and a lot of them travel the 3.5 hours to see the cows, not only that the population up here goes up and down due to mining demand. Rocky might work but a little bit of a backward town (trying to be conservative here).

More teams in NSW screams trouble, especially with the revised pokie laws.

I love how Souths claim they will now survive forever due to Rusty and Holmes Le Court. Last I heard John is about to pull out as he won't continue to sustain a dying club, and Rusty eventually will do the same. No point investing hundreds of thousands of dollars to see little return.

It looks like we are back to the point of just before superleague was introduced, where many clubs were in dire trouble and were bailed out due to superleague injections. Cronulla was a big example of this, the funds have gone and no fans to keep it going.

Like it or not the NRL is a business now and if a club cannot sustain itself on it's own two feet without any forseeable advantage then it should not be there. Or make moves elsewhere in order to survive.

I personally think manly is a team that is unrelocateable, to many people hate them!
Including myself

And broncosil i dont agree with you on the rocky point you may think there a backward town... but they sure as hell can support a football team, they would have the financial backing to provide the facitlites needed, the fan base to put bums on seats and at grass roots they have a lot of kids playing the game... so they have the abilty to produce there own players, all of those things combined would have sydney clubs salvating, Its also the reason IMO why they deserve there own club

Fair enough rissi, but I don't think it should be a new team but a relocated one. You can take your pick, so many Sydney teams are in dire financial trouble.

I still stand by my point with Mackay. The word around town is that most will not change allegiances from the Cowboys, just like many won't change from the Broncos to support an Ipswich team.

The Matthew Johns sex scandal pushed Cronulla closer to the abyss when four key sponsors informed the club they had withdrawn their financial support.

As further details emerged of the night seven years ago that has cost Johns his career and caused irreparable damage to the Sharks, chief executive Tony Zappia confirmed the club had lost $150,000 worth of sponsorship and more could follow pending meetings with major backers next week.

Cronulla are already sagging under an $11 million debt and only last week the club announced plans to move five home games to the New South Wales Central Coast for the next five seasons in an attempt to guarantee its future.

The club's major sponsor LG is among the companies Zappia will hold talks with next week. Should LG withdraw its support, Cronulla's immediate future would be under threat.

As it stands, LG's sponsorship is over at the end of the season and it appears unlikely to be renewed given the damaging headlines surrounding the club.

"It's disappointing," Zappia said. "The fact is the club is being damaged by something that happened seven years ago."

Zappia said the sponsorship withdrawals would place more pressure on the club to attract supporters to games.

The Sharks have averaged fewer than 10,000 fans to their games this season, well down on their budget of 13,000.
