Should Wayne Bennett's Contract be Extended?

The sad thing about this whole thing is you can tell Wayne didn't want to leave his Broncos. He wanted to finish his career here but I guess fairytales are hard to come by in our game. Wayne didn't want to leave, the Broncos simply didn't answer the door while Wayne was knocking.

I think Bennett now wants more time to convince some players to go with him.

He did, and they gave him 2 more years for him to retire as was the plan all along, but I guess because he didn't win the premiership he wants to continue on, which is not the Broncos fault.

I never wanted Wayne gone to start with. I am pretty unhappy about the whole situation but granted I am not privvy to what it has been like behind the scenes.

Out of the available replacements though, Seibold would have been my first choice so at least that is some consolation.

As much as I want Wayne to stick around for his final year for sentimental purposes, surely it’s in the best interest of both clubs to make the swap as soon as possible.

Wayne wants the money, he is not going to up and leave the cash, he want the broncos to be the one to pull the pin so they have to pay him out.

Coming from an unashamed Wayne supporter........I truly believe he wanted to stay, the club didn't want him so he moved on, but now his commitment to 2019 is about the money, and he hopes both clubs want to swap right now and Bronx will have to pay WB out

Most of us can only dream on a 1 million dollar salary

Who wouldn't want to collect two at once?

I can totally understand he wants the cash, you don't just walk away from $1M, its really up to the Broncos to make the call.

Wayne Bennett is a pretty influential man and has the potential to to cause quite a bit of damage to the playing group and club over the next 12 months, and I'm not saying he will but the potential is there and Wayne is not adverse to upsetting people who don't agree with him.

Is it better to just suck it up, pay the cash, take the social media hit and move on to limit the possible damage? I think it probably is.

I think the money thing is bullshit tbh. He's not going to get paid out, he's not delusional.

If the Souths agree to release Seibs early, we do the same in return. The club is not going to pay him, the only way they release him is if it's a mutual agreement between both clubs to release. At most he may get paid the difference assuming his current salary is higher.

Well it's just a sad way for this to end for the guy who basically made us who we are. I understand Wayne can't live on his past achievements but I just wish there would of been a way to keep Wayne with us until he retires in a few years.
Looking at it with a little hindsight this whole situation should've been sorted out back in 2016/17 when Wayne signed the contract extension.

At that point they should've been talking to Wayne about what the exit strategy will be.

That way in the presser for the contract extension they could've promoted that it would be Wayne's last contract before retirement and outline where Wayne will transition to at the completion of the contract.

The contract extension a few years back looked very rushed in the first place... I don't really recall any rumours that it was happening it was just announced all of a sudden.

I fully understand why the Broncos were looking for a new coach now... continuing to re-sign Wayne on extensions is not great forward planning because at any stage Wayne can could call it quits.

It depends how badly the Broncos want to get rid of him, if they want him gone, Wayne won't just walk away he wants them to have to pay. It a power play man.

*EDIT* Its the same thing that happened with the BBQ incident earlier on, he pit the players against the club, its all about power and flexing his influence, an 'up yours' to the Broncos board because they dared to make plans that didn't involve Wayne.

Maybe I'm not understanding it, but why would the club sack him? The way I understand it is they're pretty happy for him to finish the year out, they trust him, they're not going to let him make any recruitment decisions for the future, and just get ready for 2020.

The only scenario I see the club willing to sack him, is if Souths sack Seibold and the club just takes a hit to get things started a year earlier, but I don't know, that's a bit of a stretch. I don't think either club wants to pay big money to sack their coaches.

As much as it's all a game now, I just see it as a professional business. Players sign early elsewhere all the time, I wouldn't doubt their commitment to the team for the rest of the season.

Surely the club would understand giving him a swansong would get huge crowds, big marketing opportunities, players doing it for Wayne one last time, NRL fairytale.

I'll be okay if they just swap and get it done a year early, but I'm also happy for him to finish the year.

I don't see Souths taking the risk of sacking Seibold, because if we don't sack/release Bennett, they're stuck with a caretaker for 12 months, which they wont want.

they'll either coach their current clubs for 2019 or there will be a mutual agreement between the clubs and coaches to make the swap a year early ... there won't be any sackings from either club

Do they trust him tho? He has already tried to make the board look like fools through the media.

I reckon adding an extra $1 Million to the off field cap might also cost them that crazy NRL tax too.

To be fair, the board have no idea either

I'll tell you exactly what the board were thinking ...

They were thinking that Seibold has what it takes to be a long term coach at the club.

they were thinking that Seibold was off contract at South at the end of 2019

they were thinking that if they gave Bennett the extra year he wanted they would miss out on their Plan B to succeed Bennett (Bellamy of course was plan A).

If Seibold was off contract at the end of 2020, instead of 2019 ... then Bennett would have gotten the extra year.

This pretty much nails it.
