MELTDOWN Wayne Bennett - Moves to Souths

Should Wayne Bennett's Contract be Extended?

Really... fmd does wayne go around and tuck them in at night as well...thats the lamest shit I've heard. Maybe St Wayne should sit them all down and tell the all about the realitys of the real world, and about being professional fucking footballers. Considering they're in their early 20s, do they expect that wayne will be coaching all three at the same club into his 80s. As disappointing even devastating as it will be if they move on what can the club do to appease them. Even if Wayne had an extension it sounds like these players will still follow wayne when that contract expires. Wayne should be teaching them all that the club is bigger than the coach and bigger than the individual players.
This has been answered a hundred times but like usual on here, it is intentionally avoided so you can continue to make this bullshit argument. Nobody expects that, a lot of people think he deserves to go out on his own terms. Which would have been one year later.

I would say that this falls into a `storm in a teacup', much ado about nothing scenario. There were similar comments made by players (as an earlier poster noted) when Griffin got moved. Nothing happened, nobody left. I believe that the same thing will happen here. There is much more to a decision about where a player plays than just the coach. If they are happy with their role, happy with their team mates, they family and a friend support base, kids going to school here, bought a house etc, all of these things tie the player to the club. You are seeing some chest thumping to show support for Wayne, but I will be surprised if we lose many players.

There is a reason why they have done this though. It must be tied to who they are targeting and when they are off contract (Seibold). If it fitted into their plan that the person they wanted was only available in 2021, then I think you will find Wayne would have got his extension.

For the all the crap we give Melbourne at the end of the day this is a huge reason they win premierships. Hoffman 18th man. Guy is a club and league legend but at end of day no favouritism. He hasn’t performed or doesn’t meet what they think will win so he may not play. Tough but puts team first.

Similarly young halves weren’t coddled. Storm couldn’t have been ready to lose Cronk when they they did (like we lost Hunt) but they had a few in the pipeline and made do. When they didn’t meet what team needed they got sent back to reserve grade till found a combo that got them to a gf (admittedly Smith, Munster, Slater covered a lot but we supposedly have an origin 1,6,9 that is worth millions and unmovable or undropable because they are so brilliant) while we got spanked in week 1 by the biggest choker in Broncs history when the team is supposedly playing to save their beloved coach. Despite being tough players all seem to still want to play for Bellamy.

As much as I hate to say it, Smith is a more influential version of Lockyer, JT, or Johns. If we had him in our side we'd be playing this weekend. As long as he's around the storm will be good, after that they'll probably collapse into a heap and their crowds will dwindle to about ~5k.

EDIT: I hope they pay Munster and Croft huge dollars, because we know for a fact that Munster is quite average without Smith (Origin this year when he tried to be the number 1 play maker and failed spectacularly). I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Croft won't be great without a legend of the game jumping into first receiver and taking pressure off him.

EDIT 2: Worst case we lose TPJ and Oates from this. We can go and throw money at Arrow if we want (Tits have to be running low on cap space after their shopping spree) or promote Carrigan to FG. We have a plethora of talent coming through and TPJ, whilst undoubtable a freak of nature, was perpetually injured this year.

I have to disagree with this Lockyer, JT and Johns are all as influential as Smith in their own rights. Lockyer's influence cannot be underestimated, take the 2011 finals series of his final season, Lockyer gets his jaw broken in a tight finals game against the Dragon's. Despite that Lockyer guides the team home with a winning field goal and it will go down as one of the most remarkable efforts of a Bronco's player to carry on during a game despite a major injury. The confidence and leadership aura the Broncos lost when Lockyer could not backup for the Grand Final qualifier proved too much and IMO with what he provided to the Broncos as the senior playmaker and leader, he would have got us home in the 2015 grand final at a similar age to he was in 2011.

No, a player's career is his own to make and he should do all he can to make it a long and prosperous one. Normally, I would argue that the broncos is the perfect place to do that and that might still be true, after Bennet goes. However because these players have no idea who their next coach will be, what plans he has, and even if he would have a place for them in the long term, let alone develop them.
Blaming players for wanting to make career decisions, with some insight on the direction their employer might take is hardly reasonable. They are people first, players second.

Wayne will never say nothing like that to any of his players these days because there is more to life than football and better bbq’s to attend.

I don't see anyone chucking a tanty. They just like the bloke they are playing for.

Threatening to not sign unless Wayne is coach isn’t that very thing?

Threatening to leave if he isn’t re-signed, etc?

This attitude stinks and will infect the club for the worse...

I think Locky helped make Smith (and all the QLD greats really) the leader he is today, but Smith perfected the art. The guy has gotten his side into the GF playing a hybrid hooker/ halfback role, is able to make the refs bow to him like a siren to a sailor, acts as an on field coach to the point where Bellamy has like a sub 30% win rate without him, and is bullet proof in that he does what he wants in the ruck.

That said, if you offered me either one at 18 years old knowing how their careers would pan out I would be stuck on who to pick.

Smith in a heartbeat. Lockyer is almost every bit as good but Smith playing the position he does, does not need anyone else. He sets up every set, he is the master puppeteer, he starts EVERYTHING and coaches those around him as well.

The fact that as a Qlder, he is a Storm legend will always irk me.

It irks me that as far as I know of he hasn’t really helped the Qld side move on with out him. I was hoping he’d be in camp with Macca.

Anyone who wants to leave because Wayne wasn't given one extra year should be sacked on the spot. Good riddance. We don't have any use for players that are that fragile mentally. That's probably the reason our defense has gradually turned to shit since 2015, we've gone from having professional men to a bunch of kids in their early 20's who have been brought up believing that as long as Wayne is coach nothing bad will happen to them.

I'm worried. They better have a replacement asap, or next decade could get ugly. I don't want our club to end up like Newcastle.

Having said that, we are somehow equal 2nd favourite to win the 2019 premiership according to TAB. Only Roosters are ahead at $5.50. We are $8 with Melbourne. TAB anticipating a Bennett storyline? EDIT: Just saw Souths are also $8.

I haven't seen a single player that's said they won't sign if Bennett doesn't. I honestly don't know where you have got that from. I've seen players though who have stayed for unders or who have come to the Broncos because of Wayne Bennett.

There is a huge difference between our players wanting their coach to be treated with a little more dignity and respect and what you are suggesting is their attitude. There are a fair few on here who seem to ignore its not Bennett leaving that's the issue, it's the manner in which it appears he is being pushed out the door.

Plenty of top, proven players have also stayed at the Broncos because of Wayne Bennett.
