Webcke in Action

I see a lot of people these days rate Petero above Webcke and although I love Petero, I just can't see how. Maybe it's because Petero retired later? I used to do 3-2-1s with my friends back in the day and Webcke was in the mix every week.

He was the best prop of my lifetime.

Gallen played 80 in Origin the same year they got done for peptides. In no way does that count. He’s not even in touching distance of those guys.

I'd agree. He is a self confessed drug cheat who took peptides to enhance his performance. That easily should be enough to exclude him from any debate about the great forwards of our game. He isnt fit to lace Webcke's boots.

Big Pete posted a lot of the old forward stats a while back, from memory, Petero was significantly more impactful than Webcke statistically.

However, Webcke did a lot of the hard work and 1%ers obviously.

For reference sake.

I think if Petero stayed and didn't play his best footy at the Panthers, he'd possibly be higher rated on here than Webcke.

Petero Civoniceiva's Penrith Panthers Stats

2008:
21 Games, 1 Try, 23.1 Tackles, 87.4% Tackle Efficiency, 16.6 Runs Avg, 142.6m Avg, 3 Line-Breaks, 14 Offloads

2009: 12 Games, 26.4 Tackles, 89.8% Tackle Effiency, 17.3 Runs Avg, 139.7m Avg, 13 Tackle Breaks, 18 Offloads

2010: 19 Games, 22.8 Tackles, 90.8% Tackle Effiency, 15.7 Runs Avg, 139.3m Avg, 18 Tackle Breaks, 1 Line-Break, 15 Offloads

2011: 22 Games, 2 Tries, 22 Tackles Avg, 14.4 Runs Avg, 122m Avg, 31 Tackle Breaks, 1 Line-Break, 27 Offloads

Honestly, comparing Petero and Webcke is really getting down to splitting hairs. They were both phenomenal players, two of the best Props of the modern era, and any difference in quality between them is realistically so small it's almost insignificant. Maybe by a nose most would say Webcke, but there would be honestly bugger all in it.

Curious that Lazarus doesn't rate much in this conversation?

Lazarus is clearly the best prop I have seen.

I tend to agree. I think he had as much determination and work ethic as the other two, but he was just a little more naturally gifted in physique and ability, which probably put him just a little bit higher.

If you were building the perfect NRL Front Rower from the ground up before Payne Haas came along, you'd have very likely come up with someone who looked and operated exactly like Glenn Lazarus.

Which, once again, shows how insane Haas is. Lazarus' biggest plus was he had such a big motor, he could keep it up all day. Haas can do the same, but can also break the line and score freakish tries at will.

Lazarus has the Premierships, Test and Origin jumpers and the longevity of success over a decorated career. All signs point to Haas exceeding that, but until it's proven in the long run, you'd have to say Lazarus remains the benchmark.

Because he only played two seasons in the modern era, and it's debatable if 1998-2000 should really count as the 'modern' era.

Otherwise he's one of the first players picked in an all-time Broncos line-up and deservedly so.

Andrew Johns is an immortal.

The NRL doesn’t give 2 hoots if you took drugs, so long as you’re one of the poster boys.

Does anyone really give a **** that AJ took recreational drugs? Great player and great analyst. Deserved immortal in my books.

I think it's an issue. I remember watching him being interviewed by Sterlo I think it was and him saying he used them at times to help him cope with the pressure of playing games, even though a lot of his drug use was supposed to mainly be in the off season. Couldn't help thinking that in some ways it was helping his performances as he needed to take them to play.

I've heard credible first hand accounts of heaps of players being regular users. Inclding a very big name from a certain Qld club people on this forum might support.

If AJ made it his whole career playing high yet never recording a positive reading then he's a genius mastermind, which we all know he isn't.

Immortal all day.
