Where does Benji Marshall fit in?

Benji still has speed to burn and he can tackle 1 on 1 it would be his decision making that would hurt him.

For those of us who may not be quite up to the same lvl of indepth rugby league analysis as you, Can you please explain how hunt single handedly cost us the grand final?

Hunt didn't cost us the GF, and he had an infinitely better season than Benji.

I posted this earlier in the thread, but I'll post it again, it's debatable that Hunt had a better 2015 than Marshall. He probably did, because the Broncos as a whole performed a lot better than the Dragons, but Marshall's stats were actually quite impressive, he finished 2nd to Thurston in Try Assists.

Marshall 2015 - 23 games, 22 try assists, 3 tries, 5 line-breaks, 18 line-break assists, 31 tackle busts, 52 missed tackles.
Hunt 2015 - 26 games, 16 try assists, 12 tries, 11 line-breaks, 16 line-break assists, 51 tackle busts, 73 missed tackles.

Unbreakable, Ben Hunt, I get the feeling you really dislike him.

That isn't even debatable. Hunt's stats and season were obviously better. What I find absolutely hilarious and I'm sure you will too, is that when Marshall finishes 2nd in try assists you think it's up for debate that he had a better season than the half back that was integral to his teams charge towards the Grand Final. But here's the best bit. In 2016 Hunt came 3rd in try assists, only to be beaten by Thurston and Cronk and has been constantly chastised by you.

I for one am curious as to which relative of yours he slept with to bring on this hostility.

Ok just to bring it back to Benji I read Alex Glenn said something about him playing centre. Wtf?

2016 has nothing to do with this conversation, as I'm sure you'd be aware of if you could read. I simply posted those statistics to show that Marshall had a better season than a majority of people believe he did in 2015, statistics don't show the full story obviously. (As proven by Hunt in 2016, where he was extremely average but still managed a lot of Try Assists)

I've got nothing against Hunt, he's a great runner of the football, you'll never see me question his ability as a running half, I just don't think he's a good compliment for Milford, who is as good of a running half, if not already better than Hunt.. And at such a young age I believe we should be pairing Milford with someone in the Halves who has a proven track record of getting repeat sets, tries from kicks and generally just knowing how to play Rugby League on 5th tackles. (This person isn't Marshall for the record, I doubt he plays a single game in the halves in 2017 unless we have injuries)

Of course I can read. I'll make it easier for you to understand.

Benji Marshall + 2nd in try assists = good
Ben Hunt + 3rd in try assists = bad
Unbreakable - consistency = bad.

Understand?

Ok ok stop now before things get nasty. Just keep the thread about Benji and where he will play. It's going to be a long tedious off season otherwise

Would you mind showing me where I said that Marshall was good because he was 2nd in Try Assists? I don't recall doing that.

I quoted a comment stating that Hunt had an "infinitely better season than Marshall", I then followed that up with a logical and statistically proven comment that Marshall had a comparable season to Hunt in 2015, with arguably better overall "Halfback" stats, in less games, with a worse supporting cast. If you misconstrued that as me saying that 2015 Marshall was better than 2016 Hunt, or whatever you think my agenda is, then you've only got your lack of perception to blame for that.

Look, I'm not a Hunt basher as most on these boards would certainly know. I love the guy and the fact he bleeds maroon and gold. I also defend him regularly. However, to say he was single-handedly responsible to lose the grand final, which may or may not be fair in some people's eyes, is certainly applicable when you consider the spear tackle that matched NQ up field at a time when all we had to do was tackle as quickly and easily as possible to win the game. Then of course THAT drop.

At at the same time, while I will still probably be considered unfairly to be a Hunt basher, I also want it noted that I have long said McCullough is just as much if not more to blame. All he had to do was pass the ball to Parker who would have walked in under the posts untouched and decided a dummy would be a better option. Sorry to de-rail the thread, I shan't do it again. :sorry:

Benji also ran 2nd in the Dally M in 2015. Ben Hunt 5th. Still think Hunt was a much better half that year. Don't write Benji off though.

I don't believe that Marshall is a "depth" signing.

We went through this with Scott Prince a few years ago. Prince signed a two year deal. He was always going to be in the side and the proof was when he was told he was not part of our plans going forward. He chose to retire at the end of the season rather than fight his way back from reserve grade.

Benji is on a shorter deal so it might be just for depth after all but I don't think that's the case. It wasn't for Prince but maybe Benji is in a different headspace.

There just seems to be no logic in it. Why sign a half if you have complete faith in your existing ones?

Put him on the bench and we sacrifice the hard earned development of Nikorima. I don't like the idea of him in the centres but maybe Wayne has a plan.

I fear there's a bit of wishful thinking in regards to our halves. Looking at it objectively, are they honestly the pair to take us forward? I think highly of both of them and Ben Hunt was a revelation in seasons where we didn't make much of an impact.

They also got us a breath away from a premiership...but as Jack Gibson said ... The only time close enough is good enough is when you are throwing hand grenades. You don't have to hit the target, just get somewhere near it. With everything else there is no success unless you actually hit the target.
