Where does Benji Marshall fit in?

Already have for yonks

Then simply put the poster on ignore or make a report and the staff will handle it.

The other way just derails the thread and takes it off topic.

Are we so sure that Marshall won't start in the halves?

i know WB has come out publicly and backed them but I'm not so sure.

I picked up the Big League season review the other day. According to them, Hunt missed 99 tackles - the second-most in the competition.

Unless Benji was first (the magazine didn't say), why are we criticising him for his defence? This myth that Hunt has great defence needs to be knocked on the head I reckon.

Ben Hunt - 582 tackles, 99 missed tackles
Benji Marshall - 197 tackles, 47 missed tackles

So if Benji Marshall stands in the exact same spot Ben Hunt stood in all year and is forced to attempt 681 tackles, how many will he have missed?

I'm not sure of the point you're trying to make.

They're both halfbacks right? Aren't they already standing in the same spot? I'm not a maths whiz so if you calculate the percentages Hunt might be better

I will concede though that halfback for the Brisbane Broncos is a bit different to any other club. Kinda like that article I read years ago that said Lockyer missed more tackles than any other player in the NRL era. You could easily make the case that no other player was targeted more heavily. I don't know if Hunt is quite there yet.

Hunt had to make 3 times the amount of tackles. So that means on percentages his defence was better then Marshalls

The point Cult3 is making is that replacing Hunt for Benji because of Hunt's defence is taking 2 steps backwards.
From his stats, Hunt missed 14.54% tackles attempted. Benji missed 19.26%.

If Hunt is not quite there yet in the context of defence, the Benji is much worse and not getting better now.
If you're trying to make an argument to replace Hunt, you'd best make it using other points.

Percentages don't work that way...

There's a million variables when it comes to tackles made and missed tackles that wouldn't be shown in those stats.

Tackle efficiency etc, the Dragons also have a completely different defensive system which would affect the numbers, but with that being said, Benji isn't a good defender and it shouldn't really be used as a net positive for starting him over Hunt, they're both equally poor imo.

Anyone watch Hunt's defence? About half way through the year I was concerned with the stats too, so I watched more closely. There would be 3-4 tackles a game where Hunt deliberately makes first contact with the runner, hard, to halt their momentum. He'll bounce off while the others wrap him up a half second later. I'd say it's a deliberate ploy - the opposition targets him to wear him out, but if he doesn't have to get involved with the ruck and the wrestling, it doesn't tire him as much. It ***** up his stats as it's be counted as a missed tackle every time.

Does anyone notice when Hunt tackles he sticks his leg/knee up at them when tackling.

Yeah I agree with this and believe the stats weren't telling the whole truth. Hunt makes first contact up top with Gillette taking the legs. However hunt wouldn't always get involved in the ruck instead he'd retreat back the 10 to get onside.

It was as if they claimed that as a missed tackle because he would retreat. He would at times get bumped off (game against t Rex comes to mind) but for a large part his initial contact would halt the runner's momentum. It's not as though he was getting completely run over or missing legs tackles 5 times a game

I don't know if that's purposeful. I typically saw his technique as him jumping up to make contact around the chest and ball and the impact of the tackle brings his legs up.

Yes I have noticed that a lot.

He also tends to go for the strip a lot as well, sometimes it pays off, other times it doesn't and the player makes more metres than if Hunt had attempted a generic tackle rather than trying to play for the strip.

Does everyone forget Benji's 220 shit games??

Apparently they do here, I like to look at positives with any signing but Benji?

Seriously? Have we reached that level?

Apparently so.

I would rather eat a bucket full of human turds (not diarrhea, no way I could drink that shit) than watch Benji run around in a Broncos Jersey.

You're super fucking negative man.. chill

Another key stat in defence is the amount of effective one on one tackles Hunt was forced to made this season....he is right up there in the top 5 or 6. Teams definitely target him.

Cool, turn the game off and eat that bucket of shit whilst we enjoy our 100k ex-international halfback possibly playing a few minutes off the bench. I'll put it simply for you.

Salary cap- $100,000 + Backup halfback = Good
Salary cap - Backup halfback = $100,000 of unused money which is dumb.

Unless you're happier with Zach Strasser running around in a Broncos jersey which would just make you seem more stupid, Benji is a good option. There's plenty of positives and your reaction just makes me believe you didn't look for any of them at all.

Well go support another team then

You won't be missed

Seriously?

It would seem the bucket of diarrhoea would be the easier option to me. Pinch your nose and scull, much easier than chewing solids.
