I disagree. We already have our future half, he is just 4-5 years away. We just have to keep him, and keep him from serious injury. Coby Black.

What games make you so confident?

I've seen the name floated quite a bit but haven't seen any of him, have you followed him in the lower/under grades?

For me the main thing I look for from a 7 is their kicking game combined footy IQ/game awareness (knowing when to do what). It's critical for a 7 to take advantage of the gains made by our middles and to make the best 5th tackle option 9 times out of 10, otherwise the forwards are just busting their ass for nothing.

Yes Cleary has shown he is the full package, but I think where he stands above the rest is his elite kicking game. He always has his opposition on the back foot, starting them off in a bad position at the start of nearly every set. I also think how great his kicking game has become, has actually opened up his running game alot more because the opposition underestimate his running ability thinking he will kick or pass.
This isn't a fair thing to say: but we needed a premiership winning performance from our halfback to win the title last season. Penrith got that.

Reynolds has been the better of the two on a number of occasions, but two times he wasn't were in Grand Finals.

Reyno choked .
It's hard to hold it against him given we wouldn't have got there without him, but yes he sure did and would be beating himself up over it. If we're to plan for a rematch, our halfback/tactical kicker is the one area that needs to improve. So this talk of Madden is good enough, Walsh can do it all, etc, isn't all that compelling.

What isn’t fair to say?

I'm loathed to blame Adam Reynolds for us losing the Grand Final, but he kind of did. Or to be kinder, Cleary won it for Penrith.

That is what puts Cleary in immortal discussions already though, that ability to come up clutch when the moment calls for it. It is why he is a better halfback than anyone else running around at the moment, including Reynolds.

I wonder how much that early injury affected him though as well. His performance was definitely not up to scratch and both he and Capewell let the side down when the pressure was at its highest but even so, I do wonder how bad that early injury was.
I think every Broncos fan is eternally grateful that Reynolds has taken us from crayons to perfume, but the brutal assessment is he's put in some distinctly ordinary performances along the way. The Grand Final was one of them. The answer isn't dropping him, but if he's to be succeeded, his replacement will have to hit the ground at an impressive pace.

Yeah I don’t know if I’m looking into it too much but after that 3rd Mam try you can see Reynolds was screaming as if we’d already won, which he never usually does. I thought it was a bit out of character for him.

Usually he’s the more serious one in the try celebrations keeping the boys composed.

I'm quietly confident that will be Madden (even though I really rate Lam) and if it isn't, hopefully he buys us enough time to nurture Black and allow both Walsh and Mam to mature and take over the reigns while Black comes along (and this is putting a lot of faith into a kid who could end up anywhere between an immortal and a brick layer).

I’ve only seen this and a few other highlights of him.

I’ve seen a few people compare him to Mitchell Moses, but going off the very little I’ve seen of him it seems like he has a nice foundation to build on as long as he’s willing to work hard.

Execution in the big moments .
Difference between good and great . Walsh and Capewell also failed when it was their time to do what was required .

Well Jock got a lesson in what not to do . Hopefully he learns from it . Reyno got lucky more than once with hail Mary kicks over the last cpl of seasons . Bad decisions by the apposition making him look good . I thought he wasn`t always taking the best options but got lucky more than once . Got found out when it mattered .
I never said Jock was good enough already. He has much to learn . But with good coaching and more experience he could be serviceable for future seasons . How he reacts when teams have more video of him and their analysis and counters to his idiosyncrasies are the true test for young players like him .

Perry played 20 games in 2006 and only another 23 in the two years after that season. if you're after 20 games pick Rogers. The Broncos are after a 300-game half back. Perry really isn't an example of what they want.
Great point @1910.
For clarity, I don’t think we should set the bar for a Shane Perry. The bar should be a player better than Cleary. However, can we thrive with a Perry like worker IF the 9,6 and 1 are stars?!

Still need the #7 to be a threat in his own right . He will be the one making space for the #6 and #1 . Also needs to be a good defender as that channel is where a lot of breaks are made . Reyno got beaten a cpl of times on the outside last season .[Nicho and Kaylin left him grasping at air .] Look for more set plays trying to exploit his older legs next season . Dropping a few KGs might help . But he may not be as physical in tackles as he has been during his Broncos stint . He has roughed up a few blokes when he got a good shot on them . Which I admire from the little fellas
