Why delayed games are good for the sport.

Having Rugby League only on foxtel would destroy league IMO. Some people choose not to waste money on foxtel when they have far more important priorities. Union might not be dying if it was on FTA TV.

This is exactly right.
It's the reason union is dying, and why the A-League has never been able to properly cash in on Socceroo-mania. They're hidden from public view. Put the NRL out of reach of 4/5 households and it will go the same way.

I don't see what the big issue is? Yes the first Friday night game started earlier than usual due to the double header, and channel 9 didn't want to change their schedule, but in fairness they did televise it like the normal first friday night match (short add breaks etc).

I could undrstand the frustration if they televised both matched like the do the second Friday night game (long ad breaks every 10 minutes etc), but they way they handled it, if you didn't know the game kicked off early, you would have been none the wiser.

Except for people at the game and news feeds giving you the score ahead of what you are seeing. This is my biggest gripe about delayed coverages - no matter how hard I try to avoid it, somehow I always end up at some point finding out the score ahead of what I'm seeing.

And I'd be more for putting everything on Foxtel if I could buy a Sports Only package and not have to pay for crap I am not going to watch or even consider watching.ever

I have Foxtel but I think it's ridiculous I have to pay for all that shit, all I want is sport, nothing else.

They should release a $30 sports only package IMO.

Yeah, but they wouldn't make any money if they did that!

Perhaps, I think they could make money from it because they would potentially tap a new market of customers who otherwise would not have subscribed to any of Foxtel's services.

Another point worthy of note is the range of IPTV services becoming readily available at much cheaper prices than Foxtel with a similar set of channels. Customers on these services may never sign up to Foxtel due the price difference, however they may consider a sports package as this is arguably the main differentiator between Foxtel and other pay TV services.

This would also include multicultural pay TV services which has a sizable amount of subscribers who may also be only interested in sports. I could name many people I know who would fit in this category actually.

The only catch being they may have some customers drop off from basic+sports to just sports however if they have confidence in the value their service offers then that shouldn't be an issue.

There would also have to be a pricing restructure as currently the sports package is listed at $16 however they could easily just go *Only applicable when combined with starter package.

My 2 cents worth.

That's the whole thing with foxtel though. You can never get away with buying just one of their packages as they split similar channels up in to different packages so they know people will have to buy multiple packages to get what they want.

People seem to think this new TV deal is going to be some kind of magic bullet for NRL coverage. If anything, I think it will go the other way. If networks are going to pay more for the rights, they've got to recoup that money somehow.

If it's pay tv paying for it, then it's going to be passed on to the consumer. If it's FTA paying for it, then it will be via more advertising. Either way, I can't see the fans winning out of any of it.

Didn't seem to affect Foxtel.

They get all their games simulcasted live and a dedicated AFL channel. Bloody fantastic deal if you ask me.

If we get the same deal then I would be very happy

Time will tell whether that's actually a good deal or not (the dedicated AFL channel). They had one a little while ago and it was a fail. They thought it'd be a gimmy that people would pay extra to get it but they eventually just had to make it part of the basic package because a very small percentage of subscribers actually purchased it.

Imagine if they had more exposure, look at the Waratahs, Brumbies and force... Amazing that fans show up when a team is on the top of the table. [icon_drun

Ahhhh so it's not part of the basic sports package? They would still have to show all 8 games live though even if they did cancel the channel.

I would like to have a deal where we could at least get the Sunday game live so it's only the delayed 2nd Friday game. I would actually prefer MORE FTA coverage, if there was 4-5 games on FTA I would cancel Foxtel, NRL has a lot of power here so they should play hard ball with Foxtel and get them to pay up.

3 Monday night games this year have had record ratings in the top 10 highest rated pay TV programs EVER. That's incredible and the Origin this year is so far the highest rated show of the year with a average of 3.45M and a p peak of 4.05M so it's looking good so far.

Its a hard choice between them and the 32,000 beer belly bogans on friday night right? icon_thumbs_u

Since when did only Bogans follow Rugby League??

Since the Gold Coast entered the comp.

You think the whole 32000 at the game friday night went to cheer the broncos?

We had the Lebs for the bulldogs there, and the bogans for Titans and Manly.

Plus some of the broncos fans i have seen at games are indeed bogans, you said so yourself talking about those ones who kept going for food icon_thumbs_u
