OFFICIAL Xavier Coates Leaves Broncos

This is what i mean as well Mchunt, and the exact same thing applies to Dearden.

This profession of love for the club, and supposed dedication to making things right, only to turn around and take a huge steaming shit on the club by defecting to our most hated enemy.

**** Coates, he is a dog and any assholery is warranted.
If he came out and was honest from the start, this shit wouldnt hit home so hard, but to give the fans and the club hope, then tear it down and defect to the fucking Storm is unforgivable.

The only bloke to commit so far is Staggs, he gets a huge rap from me for actually sticking by his word.

Also puts the Fifita defection into perspective.

We can rip into Fifita as much as we want (myself included) but at least he openly went for the money that was an eye watering $300-$400k more than what we could offer which would be extremely hard to turn down especially as he didn’t even have to relocate. He also didn’t openly declare to be a Bronco for life and has maybe left the door ajar for a return in the future.

I really like Xavier and wanted him to succeed and stay here, unfortunately defecting to arguably our most hated rival in an AFL dominated city for reportedly ‘less’ money therefore making the Storm squad even more harder to split up mere months after declaring you want to stay for life and be part of the rebuild is worse than the Fifita scenario (if you ignore the Bali incident where we bailed him out)

He might be replaceable but just wait until you see him don that fucking purple jersey against us and is out leaping our wingers and helping the Storm continue to pummel us on every occasion. Let that sink in

Unfortunately knowing the Suncorp crowd there will be a handful of us booing drowned out by the cheering of the most passive fanbase in the entire competition.
Passive fanbase is dead right. That's why other teams love playing here. The facilities are great and the 'home' crowd roar like kittens. I've been to louder wakes in Glasgow.

I dont think we could afford all 3.

Arey for $750-$800k
Hodgson probably $600k
SJ probably $700-$800k

Should be able to afford 2. If they get Lodge off the books entirely then maybe all 3.

But that is a large investment for 3x 30yr olds and the loss of Lodge starts to see us become vulnerable in the middle.

It would suddenly provide us with a formidable spine though

we could probably pick up SJ for 600k. unless the Sharks up their offer if they miss out on Reynolds

100%.

Coates could grab the mic and call all Broncos fans hillybilly ***** and they would still cheer him and comment on how proud they are of him stringing a sentence together.

I think sharks will go hard if they dont get Arey.

They will go with an SJ + Moylan pairing as a worst case scenario.

I don't think that combo works, but there is a dearth of halves available.

Croft's manager really should be hunting hard in this market, because once Arey and SJ make a decision there's basically only Brookes and Atay left.

Croft is somewhat limited but I think you can park him next to an attacking half like SJ, Cody Walker, Wighton, etc. and just get him to do all the kicking and boring stuff to get them around the field.

Attacking, ball running halves are reasonably common so having a cheap Chad Townsend knock off can provide a complementary halves pairing at a decent price... you would need to have the other spine spots pretty well sorted out to provide the attacking threats though.

Eh I beg your pardon! Croft is a real good organizing half. He can kick long, and short. He gets the team around the park with ease. His defence is solid, he passes sweetly right to left and left to right. As a playmaker he's well undervalued at $500K.

In addition, Pies thinks he would make a great Fullback given half the chance.

I'm just over here seething that the Tigers refused to trade Talau to the Storm for JAC. If they did that deal the Storm wouldn't have gone after Coates as hard. Stupid Tigers.

Let's invest in the spine first and then worry about what a teenage Winger wants to be paid for his services.

This is the one thing that actually makes me feel less disillusioned about Coates leaving.

A good and cohesive spine can make average outside backs into great players. Look at Reimis Smith and George Jennings.

True. We are the most insufferably entitled fans in the NRL. No one else is even close. We expect to pick the eyes out of every other team, and have them grateful just to wear our jersey. We tire of our own senior players, treat like them like refuse, and mercilessly dump on others who leave.

We would be kidding ourselves if we think our club didn't rort the salary cap through third party payments during our glory years. We are like the USA of the NRL.

The vast majority of posters here have a very balanced perspective and don't think anything like this.
Honestly this is just mindless drivel that makes a Badel article look accurate.

They might still get him yet too.

Ever played an online game? Kids throw out death threats on chat constantly
Death threats from people who don't know who you are would feel a bit different to this.

I doubt any of the threats would be credible, but I don't think it's weak of Coates to be effected by them.

It's all the more reason though to get off the Gram.

I hadn’t considered that angle.
Is it not possible to just set your account to private? I don’t have Instagram 🤷🏼‍♂️

You are 100% accurate, I like to engage in other forums where it's a more open discussion (not full of Brisbane only fans) and our club is easily one of the most hated, everyone who I have seen saying which teams they hate the most.. Brisbane usually is in their top 3 and I think you'll find the entitlement of your average Brisbane fan has a lot to do with that.

What's so balanced about those wishing injury on Coates for leaving the club to better himself? It's obviously not ideal for us as Brisbane fans but you can't blame the guy.

He is going to a club that probably has a 1-2 year window to win the comp, however long Bellamy stays on for.

Wish him all the best really.

Happy we aren't overpaying for a winger, but he'll go to a club that will develop him into a very good player.

He's only signed for 2yr and storm don't overpay for outside backs so likely he comes back on the market for 2024 and we may be able to go back in.

I think he looks more like Folau than GI... so I think he becomes a really good outside back in the future, but probably limited to center or wing for his career. He'll be a luxury buy to finish off a team wherever he ends up, but not really what we need just now.

I've felt for awhile that we basically had to make a decision between Staggs, Coates and Niu, but more so between Staggs and Coates, as Niu has fallen out of favour a little.

I think Staggs was the right choice though.. he's already a gun outside back and will be our strike weapon moving forward. Along with TPJ if we can extend his contract.

I think Coates is a little further away from being a legitimate strike weapon and needs a little more from the inside men to be brought into the game compared to Staggs who can create his own space once given the ball.

Niu could become a fullback, but needs more time in ISC... maybe we go with a 1-2 year extension at a lowish deal to let him develop and see where we get to with him. He could also develop into center or wing depth (a lot of small wingers in the comp nowadays). On the wing he could become our version of To'o (likes to get on the ball, fast, strong, tackle breaker, etc.), but it would all come down to his ability under the high ball against those big opposing wingers.

Trying to keep Staggs and Coates would be too much investment when trying to revamp our spine and probably costs us Herbie in the future as well.
