Hodges' hit on Morris under NRL scrutiny

im completely biased about it. i would call any of the manly players a dog for doing it :)

in no way would i be calling for a charge or suspension no matter who it was.

I thought nothing of it at the game - he was on the ground, he had the ball, ref hadn't called time off, he had every right to tackle him.

But watching the replay, it wasn't the best thing to do.

And this is just it. Exactly. At the game it looked fine. On replay, perhaps he could have done something different.

But guess what folks? Hodges didn't make a decision to tackle Morris having watched a fu**ing replay

He did it in a split second in the heat of battle and there's no way he did anything wrong (and I'm not really a fan of his)

Other posters trying to draw an anology between this and next week - with preplanning - Manly players striking Locky in the head, need to rethink things somewhat

Hodges Hit:Brisbane centre Justin Hodges has been condemned in some circles of the media for a shot he laid on Dragons winger Brett Morris with the worst coming from Morris’ father “Slippery” Steve, who called Hodges a “grub” and the hit a “low act”.
There is no doubt the shot was unsavoury. Morris lay prone on the ground while teammate Ben Creagh stood above him with his hand out as if to stop.
But can Hodges really be called a grub for the act? I don’t think so. In an era when players like Issac Luke make it okay to lay down, players simply have to play to the whistle. Hodges did just that. If grubs like Luke get away with their gutlessness, stuff like this happens. How did Hodges know Morris wasn’t feigning? Hodges wasn’t going to be fooled by any chicanery. He made the tackle and then moved on. This is the rugby league world we now live in where it can’t automatically be assumed that you play by manly ideals and when you are down, you are legitimately hurt.

Agree, except for saying it was unsavoury. There's nothing at all unsavoury about it. Again, watch the video, Morris was trying to get up. He even said after the game he was trying to get up to play on, so it was fine for Hodges to tackle him.

Everyone trying to make out this incident is anything out of the ordinary is an absolute joke.

If Morris was that bad, the medical taff should have taken him off. (they didn't)

Morris did the major injury, leaping for a Lockyer bomb.

As said earlier, Morris was trying to get up.

Just say, Hodges didn't tackle him & Morris gets up & passes the ball & Dragons score, people would be b!tching that Hodges should have tackled him.

you cant compare the sandow "incident" to this - sandow was already tackled when he lay down, whereas morris was 15+ metres away from the nearest defender.

I'd like to clutch at straws and say it was bad, mainly because that's one less thing for a Manly fan to worry about, but to be honest, I was painting my daughters room and only heard it on the radio.

One of those situations where you are damned if you do, damned if you don't, if a player surrenders, they should be well and truly smashed IMO, how is a player, of whom the average IQ is likely only above ######ation level (all players, not hodges, just to be clear) meant to determine the difference between an injured player and a surrendering player. Especially if it were say a forward, who is flat out trying to remember the coaches instructions of "catch ball, run forward"

now i know hodges isnt the sharpest tool in the shed - hes proven that time after time over the years - but deaf dumb and blind joe blow could see that morris was in a world of hurt. its not like he suddenly just forgot how to stand up and ben creagh was calling for the referee to tell him how to do it. he went down to catch the ball, didnt come back up, and was physically showing pain with no intent of playing on. the icing on the cake was that creagh had a hand on him and had a hand in the air to the referee telling him that morris was goneskis.

i mean, imagine for a second that lockyer caught that bomb instead of beale, and was layed out on the ground clutching at his broken face with one hand with no defenders for a few metres around him..........and then Weyman comes charging in and drops the shoulder into him Sandow style (which is what hodges did). it would be a VASTLY different discussion going on on this forum, to say the least.

Watch the replay again and it's clear Morris was trying to get up to play on. Morris even said so after the game. But of course, you know better than Brett Morris himself, right?
