Re: Round 16 Discussion
Actually, LOL@5(c)uff$ typed that way, is a very 2012 thing, since it refers to Souths 5 captains.
Regardless of what you think about the idea or phenomenon, calling someone a dickhead for it, is taking it to a personal level. As I said before, I meant nothing else
by it than to throw a joke in, that was relevant to the discussion at hand...
Oh well, I am sorry if you are offended by the term "dickhead". The concept of the joke is still from 2011 and though it may have a 2012 addition to it, it is no longer funny. If you want to seem fresh and new make up one for Parramatta or even the Panthers for this year. Plus it goes from originally being a piss take on how our supporter base are supposed to say Souths due to the whole missing teeth myth, to saying scuffs.
There is nothing wrong to be proud about your heritage and history, but there is a lot to hate about using it to try to demonstrate superiority to clubs who have achieved so much more than yours in the last 40 years. I don't see supporters from any other team act so foolish about their team's hopes and chances.
People take the history too far for the simple reason we have nothing else, because we have been shit. While the admin of the club continued to piss away and not update to the current Rugby League landscape, which took until Russell and Peter came on board. No other supporters in the game have the same history of both great times and shits times like we do. All the supporters long for is a return to that greatness that almost every club has been able to experience but due to how poorly run the club was off the field and how the game changed with correct payment of players, we lost a lot of great players and the club fell behind in the late 80's never to recover. A reason we were kicked out and due to the fact we wouldn't merge.
Under McGuire this year, Souths has as good a chance as any to finally break the hoodoo of putting together a positive season. While I acknowledge that, they are not the world beaters most supporters claim they are, and I'd love nothing more than to see those supporters put back in their place with another 9th place this season. And trust me, I would definitely LOL!
Under McQuire we have looked the best in some time. I still think we need to bring back our 2007 defence which was the most dominating it had been in 20 years. Yet after that finals experience we turned to mush. The last few years have also been tarnished by some long term injuries to key players and the kids that stood up almost helped produce the goods but when it came to the crunch games we needed to win to stay alive and make the finals again, we choked.
It's one thing to be positive and believe in your team, which every supporter should do. It's an entire different thing to act like your team is finally going to get what "they're entitled to", because they are the pride of the league, blah blah.
Most other teams who haven't won anything in a long time have supporters who can be as passionate as any other, but most will be humble and realistically hopeful about their team's chances. It's what I do, and my team IS an NRL powerhouse!
I don't think any Souths fans think that. If they do think like that they are stupid. Rugby League is all about earning it on the field, it isn't handed on a silver platter. The only way that is earned is by playing for 80 mins every game and playing consistent football and we haven't done that for years.
You support the Broncos, a team who yes is currently the NRL powerhouse, no denying that. A team with 20 years of success and only 4 failed years, with this year possibly shaping up to be another successful year. As a supporter of such a successful club, I think it is really hard for you to judge the merits of fans of losing teams as you have never faced the mindset of failure like we have.
I respect the second ones a lot, and totally despise the first. They remind me of soccer supporters who live in the past and refuse to acknowledge their team is no longer at the top of the food chain.
If people think like that then it is the wrong mindset. As I said earlier, we crave success so bad that for some people it comes across wrong. However I try to word it the correct way and whatever you are wanting to achieved needs to be earned. We earned the right to call ourselves "Pride of the League" back in the 40's - 70's during our dominate eras. Fast forward to now and we are only the "Pride of the League" on paper, in the history books.
We can call ourselves that but we are not that, we won't be that until we start winning again and win premierships again. How long that will take remains to be seen and if any of us or the club will still be around for it to actually happen is the next thing.
Gotta love "the media did it" excuse for the fans outrageous claims,
I don't know if you are based in NSW or QLD. NSW media likes a Souths story because it sells papers. I know the Rabbitohs media manager personally and have asked him about various articles and he says the journos ring him up say "we heard this, we are going to run it". He replies with "none of that is actually true". He then processed to tell me how it actually unfolded. The journo replies with "That is what our sources say, so we are running it anyway".
Earlier in the year. I think Broncoman put up an article from the Daily Telegraph - this thread -
http://broncoshq.com/showthread.php/20086-Souths-are-dreaming-AGAIN I looked at the article and laughed at how much they were reaching to find the typical "our year" story and I commented on it in that thread.
The Daily Telegraph likes to go to 5 people for comment - George Piggins, John Sattler, Mario Fenech, Craig Coleman and Sean Garlick. George Piggins bags Russell and Peter when they are doing a trash piece or come back to the club piece and they go to the past players for a "our year" stories, because these people give them the comments they want. Fans do want it to be our year. We see some glimmers of light throughout the season for the past few years and then see it fall into the heap and then the comments made by the former players makes us the laughing stock again.
I believe Mario and Satts had a story about a month ago talking up how good we are playing under Macguire. Maguire told those guys to tone down their excitement because it was unwarranted. Yes Maguire does seem to getting something out of the players we haven't seen before but we only just finished round 16. We still have a long way to go and if anything happens, well it very much happens. If we make the finals it is good and if we fail again it is another bad year to add to the collection.
Just like Dave Taylor's loose tongue last year "I can see us winning it," Taylor told The Daily Telegraph. "I definitely think we can have a good crack at the finals, and once you're there it's open slather". Comments like that over hype our year when we have disappointing end to it, but it still opens to the fact that DT probably meant "I can see us making the finals. Once we get into the finals we can give it a good crack due to it being open slather". Either way he said it the way he did and it looks bad at seasons end.
and now also for the Inglis saga, or the Luke Lewis saga in a recent past.
You can believe what you want... Me, I see a club poaching players who have committed to clubs, but just haven't put pen to paper. To me that is simply of the lowest
moral and ethical values you can think of. This goes for the club's leaders as much as for the players in question. Inglis is a footballing freak, but a crappy human
being as far as I'm concerned. And yes, I will trust the word of Andrew Gee, Hook or Paul White a 100 times over Inglis or Rusty's word!
This is where I think the Broncos ability to produce quality juniors clouds your judgement a bit. If you actually look back since Richo came to the club as CEO, you will notice a very big pattern of signings, players he has dealt with in the past. Luke Lewis is another example. Why are we not allowed to try and sign him again? He was off contract wasn't he? That is what we are allowed to do in rugby league now and every team does it, some teams more than others. Are we really any worse than other teams that makes you resent us more? The whole reason we fell behind the rest of the teams was because we failed to pay the right prices for players and they left weaken what was a strong team in the late 80's.
I don't know what the story with the Inglis signing is, I just know that the truth is in there somewhere. Some of it happened as it was said in the papers and some of it didn't happen. Are Andrew Gee's comments there to just discredit Inglis similar to how Russell came out with a tweet about how much Sandow was actually getting and not the reported $300k Parra were saying only to discredit Parramatta.
And to answer your question about what is wrong with buying players in droves... I call it cheque book rugby league, and find it despicable.
You must hate the Bulldogs, Parra, Titans look at the huge leg up they had in their first year, the difference of team the Titans were allowed to sign in their first year compared to our first year after being kicked out, no wonder we sucked. Manly, Roosters, Storm, Cronulla etc. The only team you can really say that don't buy a great deal of players are the Broncos and Warriors, otherwise almost every other team does. Why is it chequebook rugby league when Souths try to buy talented players to help their up and coming juniors get to the level they need to be? Most of the players we signed were off contract anyways. I can remember when we had trouble getting the talented players or had to pay huge overs to even get them thinking about coming.[/quote]
To make a long story short, my reasons are very valid and strong for me. Souths is a clear example of what I hate in sports!
Fair enough. I still think you are being very generic in your hatred for a team when these elements work with every other team but it is what you feel and you are allowed to stand by it. This is not put forward however when you use the lol@souths joke as it is an outdated joke that was funny but is not stale to the majority of supporters who saw the humour in it, even used it for a while but have since moved on.
Either way another rant down the drain. Enjoy the Souths hatred and hopefully we can prove your opinions wrong over this year and the next few years on the field and at some point your hatred may change.
