Player Movements and Rumours 2012

That's not true, Gagai did everything asked of him and succeeded as I already pointed out. It wasn't until he was overlooked for Copley that he started missing sessions and was subsequently dropped.

Even during that time, Gagai was re-signed to a two year deal so obviously his attitude wasn't considered a problem until it was torn up later.

Also just because Gagai wasn't as consistent as Maranta doesn't mean he never stepped up.

It's odd and I'll leave it at that.

I read an article at the time that said that if it wasn't for his poor attitude he would have likely been selected over Copely.

Agree fully with Pete. There were other ways of disciplining Gagai and frankly I'm not sure what it achieved. Through being released, Gagai is now playing first grade... hardly a punishment on his end. Forcing him to sit out the year IMO would have been a much more effective punishment.

It also doesn't sit well with me that Bennett picked him up. I'm not the biggest fan of WB these days but the fact he was willing to overlook Gagai's indiscretions makes it a little alarming that hook was not.

It's a completely different situation. Hook had to maintain the high standards and culture of the broncos, a team renowned for this. IMO hook and others at the broncos realise how quick a tantrum throwing little s*** can poison a team environment. WB was at that stage working in an environment where a culture Diane exist. He probably thought "he's only late to training? Wow he could teach these other blokes something". He was also in a position that he could give him a starting spot. So uncle Wayne becomes his savior and gagai will probably be another Boyd, and griffin is the evil step dad that preferred Copley

Can I just add too from personal experience similar to what Renouf went through when your presented a hurdle in your life the easy thing is to make an excuse for not working on overcoming it, I myself have epilepsy diagnosed at the age of 21 and for a while I used it as an excuse to effect my life, it was easier to do that then face what really needs to be done, I used to drink heavily to eaise the pain, I even drove despite the advise of my specialist but it wasn't until I got a massive kick up the backside from my parents that I responded, then I realised the reality, it was time to face the truth and I did, wasn't easy but it could be done. I'ts been a tough 9 years and I have had my fair share of setbacks, injuries from seizures etc but I'm starting to make real progress.

For me in all aspects of life attitude towards everything is important, even more so then success imo. I'm still not driving a car yet but I have recently got clearance to drive my forklift at work again because of the progress I have been making.

Frankly I just wanted Gagai to clean up his act, if that took leaving the club then so be it, better then wasting his talent all because of his attitude, sometimes you need that kick up the backside to see the truth.

Very good points and well done for having such a good attitude and doing the hard yards

Gagai was dealt with appropriately, you didn't hear the full story and never will, unless Gagai releases a bio at the end of his career telling all. Broncos are not telling the full story about Gagai, but it's for his benefit. Have faith in the Broncs and coach.

And how do you know that?

Because he is thinking logically. He has done more than miss a couple of training sessions, you dont get dropped for missing a couple of training sessions.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think the club makes mistakes from time to time, without the full story it's fair to assume either way whether he was dealt with appropriately or not. I'll give the club benefit of the doubt but without real reasons I can't say I'm not upset about letting such a talented player go. I'd be pretty disappointed if one of my mates got let go from work because he missed a few days of work which is far as information released is all we know that happened.

The only thing you can do in the absence of the full story is to weigh it up against similar cases with the club previously.

Julian O'Neill: booted out after several high profile, public drunken disgraces.
Brett Seymour: booted out after several high profile, public drunken disgraces.
Neville Costigan: booted out after several high profile, public drunken disgraces.
John Te Reo: booted out after a serious assault.
Ian Lacey: booted out after a serious assault.
Joel Clinton: effectively booted out after something very secretive went on with someone on a team camp.

In all cases except Clinton, it was a case of either repeated infringements or a serious infringement. With Clinton, the nature of the incident was deemed extremely sensitive and so confidentiality was maintained, both from the club and Clinton. The fact Clinton hasn't complained suggests he accepts he was in the wrong.

The fact Gagai hasn't complained and accepts what happened also suggests he knows he deserved it.

I don't know about silence indicating guilt, maybe in Clinton's case though. No matter how much I disliked a former employer or if I felt I was mistreated I would never go on record to voice my dislike because it just comes off an unprofessional and at best limits chances of future employment. If Gagai came out and trashed the club, unless it was something extremely bad, he would just come off as unprofessional.

I would prefer the club said nothing than to just basically say he missed a few training sessions and we don't want him anymore because I find it hard to believe missing a few sessions, unless it was very common is something that would cause a player to be let go. How come he seems to be fine in Newcastle?

If we're going off actions and facts we know, Gagai missed a few session, was let go due to that and has been great for Newcastle with no reported or rumoured misbehaviour there. If they just said we've mutually agreed to release him because Gagai feels he would be better served elsewhere and we respect that decision, or something along the PC lines I would have more readily accepted it.

Maybe I'm just having a sook about the situation but our most talented back by a long Margin is 31 next year so letting go our most promising junior that we've spent time, money and effort developing only for another club to pick him up and benefit from it a few weeks later doesn't sit well with me.

I think the key thing we don't know (But has been speculated) is WHY he missed "a few" sessions.

In either case Big Pete, anyone that has a tantrum and starts missing training sessions because someone was promoted ahead of him has no place in a broncos jersey, regardless of talent.

You're right, that's the key piece of information that would make sense of the situation. We don't really know what happens with players/player interaction with the staff at the club. I am however a football fan who is disappointed we let go our most promising player who is also a junior and fed a BS reason by the club. If this wasn't the NRL I wouldn't care so much but in this game clubs should be sacking players only for major incidents. What was really achieved from sacking Gagai? He'll probably never come back and a few weeks after being let go he finally gets a regular first grade role for another team.

The club does make mistakes. All I am saying is I believe there is more to the story. Regardless, as I have said previously whether gagai is talented or not is besides the point. Any player that starts acting like a little s*** because he has been overlooked for someone HE believes he is better than has no place in a broncos jersey. That's not what this club has ever been about and it is not something that I would ever want it to become. Gagai is not the first bronco to have to 'wait his turn' and IMO his attitude stinks.

IMO the reason he is not 'misbehaving' in newy is because he has waltzed into a starting line up, what does he have to complain about? It's like if an employee at work thinks he deserves a higher position, goes around slacking off, coming in late, bad mouthing the CEO - but then somehow gets the higher position so the behaviour stops, that doesn't mean is a better employee, he just got what he wants.

What else could the club do. The had dropped him to q cup, the fins had dropped, how else do you make him see sense but to drop him completely? When it all happened Griffin said that the door was not closed and if he improved his attitude he would be welcomed back. Reading between the lines you can see the club hoped this would be the wake up call and he would work his arse off to proof he had learnt a listen. The fact that an opportunistic coach swooped in and picked him up didn't help gagai learn a lesson

Ok, put the shoe on the other foot, what do you suggest the club should have done. You have a guy going around bad mouthing the coach, turning up late etc - do you risk that attitude rubbing off on others or do you cut him loose hoping he will learn a lesson? If he was left out in the cold for a few months he would probably learn his lesson pretty quick, but Bennent swooped and that's what happened. I won't say anymore about WB because as I have already been told all his actions are noble because he is a successful coach.

The fact that Gagai isn't misbehaving at Newcastle, is because he moved to a place where he doesn't have his "buddies" to party with all night long before training or even games. Getting a starting NRL spot didn't hurt either.

I for one, am not willing to compromise on the club's standards and values for the sake of a talented kid with no clue about work ethic and professional conduct. Besides, the reason he didn't get the spot ahead of Copley was his behavior of the field for which he was warned numerous times, as well as even being dropped from Qcup. Instead of learning from that, he threw a tantrum and magnified the issue.

More than anything, Gagai needed a change of environment, which is what the Broncos and Hook recognised when they let him go.
