Round 1 - Broncos Vs Sea Eagles - Post Game Thread

I'd be more than happy for Norman to stay at fullback for a little while longer.

He showed some glimpses of what we've been missing back there since 'K' left.

I also thought Hoffman seemed to play a lot more freely on the wing ..... maybe that really is his best position.

We can bounce back with this side i'm sure :thumbup1:

I didn't think Norman was bad at fullback. His paced looked to have improved as well. I still can't believe we let DCE run over 4 blokes like he was Tony Williams FFS. Manly scored 3 soft tries and that was the difference.

Absolutely right, the tries we let in we're soft and it definitely wasn't the position of players that let us down. Maranta's em experience and some poor defensive reads along with Reed dropping the ball were the reasons for the loss. I know a lot of people are taking the loss hard, and that's fair enough, but I prefer to look at the positives. We looked much better in attack than we have in the last two years and it wasn't until we kept handing over possession early in the second half that we looked 2nd rate. You can't give a quality side like Manly, a lot of ball and expect to win. I, for one, hope we stick with the same team for a for a few weeks. I think we could be devastating.

Bond? GTFO. Fullback's not the problem

Norman?? He has always been fcken rubbish.
The whole idea of playing him at fullback was so that it gave us an extra playmaker at the back. This was never going to work when he's a softcock with an average running game.
He doesn't commit the defenders and would always throw the pass a good couple meters before the line.
The defenders can read him like a porno mag as they know he's not going to carve them up with his awesome running game.

Macca needs 80 minutes, I'd persist with the halves and fullback at the moment but pressure is definitely on Wal.

Why is it when we need to score points is when the ruck plays come out?

Boys just needed to guts it out a bit.

That fantastic long kick from Wallace pretty much sums up the night. That could have turned the game for us but instead of capitilising the boys were all on their haunches.

50% completion rate in the second half too.

Plenty to work on and I don't think playing fantasy coach is going to fix those.

Bond, Berryman and Timu ROFL!!! Did you watch them play in the trial match with the Warriors? They are not ready for NRL just yet. Yes, we got beat, not unusual for us to lose against Manly, (I think it's 2 wins from our past 11 matches), yes, we were not up for the match and faded badly in the second half. Certainly didn't apply enough pressure at the right end of the field, but lets also look at some of the facts. Our mistakes gifted them better field position and they played most of their attacking football deep in our half. We had to keep bringing the ball off our line and always seemed to be on the back foot because of it. Sure not much to like about the game as a whole but I'm not going to slit my wrists and demand the wholesale changes to the team or the coach based on the first game of the season. No it doesn't look good, but then how many games did the Bulldogs win at the start of last season and the were in the GF? Lets see how the next few weeks pan out before we start to panic.

the biggest thing that worries me as the same problems from last year seemed evident again last night and it seems like a coaching problem.

im not going stupid over the loss but i think we need someone up front who will rip in. thaiday just doesnt look like he has it anymore. i dont know if we have the answer in the squad though.

What I'd like to see for the next 5 rounds

1. Bond
2. Berryman
3. Hoffman
4. Hodges
5. Kemp
6. Wallace
7. Prince
8. Hannant
9. McCullough
10. McGuire
11. Glenn
12. Thaiday
13. Parker

14. Baptiste
15. Gillett
16. Gibb
17. Timu

Small but speedy back 3, some good size on the bench.
It's time to change it up

Gawd...I hope not!

The Rally Towels were awesome, they just had to pick their spots. After a try, great time to do it, when they boys come out, great time to do it. After Manly score? eh not so much.

yeah they tried it too much. it felt a bit weird at first to take a prompt from a screen but i thought what the hell i'll get into it and it was a bit of a laugh and a pump up for most of the people around who joined in. hopefuly it can build into something that helps sike the team up because at hte moment suncorp seems like a pretty enjoyable place for opposing teams to come and play.

I thought we looked really good in the first half. The defence was savage and there was some brilliance with the ball. The second half was shit, but consider two things:

1. Manly are one of the best sides of the last few years.
2. Without Jack's loose carry and the resulting try, the score is 14-16, not 14-22.

Calls to cut players and the coach after a first-round (!) loss are incredibly premature.

Yeah, you wont see those towels ever again unless they keep handing them out.

No one's going to the second home game thinking "oh yeah gotta remember to bring my rally towel!"

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts.

The fact is we made those dumb errors and they're going to continue to happen.
