Brisbane Bombers NRL Bid

Re: Official Brisbane Bombers thread

Suncorp is also home to the Reds, Roar, State of Origin, Rugby internationals, Socceroos friendlies and the occasional concert.

There is also the issue that arose recently that the stadium development approval allowed for X number of fixtures per year. Adding another 12 Bombers home games into the mix will be no mean feat.

"best rugby league stadium" in the world apparently. home to one league team that doesn't own the ground. is a joke.

the govt will amend that no problems if the bid is successful

Making a forum is actually pretty easy old mate, get on your way.

Taking off the blinkers - best rectangular stadium maybe, rugby league doesn't have a monopoly on it.

Of course the Broncos don't own it - I don't see your point.

You'd hope the Government doesn't make arbitrary decisions for its own benefit. The Government rushing an exception through for 1 or 2 out of the ordinary and unforeseen fixtures is a different proposition to a guaranteed 12 additional home games a year for the foreseeable future. The residents would oppose such an application. The current number of fixtures puts a massive burden on parking and movement in and around the stadium on match days. That plus all the unwanted Caxton Street rubbish, up to 3 times a week.

As much as it seems a minor point, the perceived advantage the Bombers say they have over other bids that it has a stadium is not as straightforward as it seems.

We don't sell out all of our games and don't even come close. Therefore there is no need for a 2nd Brisbane side.

Besides most rugby league fans in Brisbane either go for the Broncos or another NRL team. It's going to be very difficult for them to grow a fan base.

Then you have the neutrals....Tickets to games are already expensive for families so they will only go to select games. Why will they go to see the Beatles tribute band one week when the actual Beatles are playing at the same venue the next?

The residents around the area have a big say on what happens with Suncorp stadium thats for sure. And why would you build a stadium in the modern era for it to be a single purpose arena. That just doesnt make sense when I put my Sport facility management hat on

Re: Official Brisbane Bombers thread

Bombers fans will be drawn from interstate ex-pats or other Broncos haters.

The Bombers would never be a team Broncos fans will associate with. Much like the Crushers. Which failed. Dissect why it failed, and differentiate yourself from that and you might have a chance.

If the business model is simply: buy Cam Smith, profit, there's a long way to go.

CQ on the other hand - a bit like Broncos fans affection for NQ. Big brother/little brother.

Re: Official Brisbane Bombers thread

Honestly, the worst thing in the world would be if the NRL gave another licence to a second generic Brisbane team.

However, it's a dumb decision ready for the plucking to be made by a dumb Sydney centric NRL executive with dollar signs in his eyes (oh, 30,000 PAX times two, every week, it can't fail!).

If it's another Qld team it has to be Ipswich/Logan/Western corridor, Sunshine Coast or Central Qld. Somewhere that will own it and give its own identity. Niche stadium (20,000 tops) with blockbusters at Suncorp.

Spot on

I am not against another QLD team

In fact I am all for it as long as a Sydney team is shut down

What I am against is another team where there is already a successful one, while other areas have nothing

And I am also against expansion, as in growing beyond 16 teams

This, there isn't room for another team out of Suncorp at this point.

successful? lol

you've missed the finals 2/3 seasons now and are hemorrhaging our best local talent by the bucketload thanks to this exact example of complacency resulting from self grandeur

Re: Official Brisbane Bombers thread

suncorp deserves a game a week. if the broncos didn't exist, and it was a clean slate today, that would be a no brainer

Personally If I had to base a 2nd Brisbane team I would set them at QE2 and put temporary seating on the race track and behind the dead ball line on game day and give them the name of a past Brisbane team (Diehards came to mind).

1: The Brisbane river being the boundary like it was during the Crushers days making it a Northside V Southside rivalry
2: A name of a Brisbane local team would connect with Brisbane people a lot more and make the brand more appealing.

You're right .... 6 premierships in 25 years is a terrible strike rate.

Besides the Bombers is a terrible name.

we don't have our own site yet, so this will do.

cam smith inaugral captain 2015

what are your thoughts on this bid?

Good luck with the bid, I got no problems with a second Brisbane side myself, provided they aren't a half arsed Crushers or similar Gold Coast failure certainty job.

only 1 of those achieved in the modern salary era. 2000 still carried hefty super league contracts.

massive underacheivement for a one town team in the capital of rugby league.

Besides the Bombers is a terrible name.
Who was the genius who thought it was a good idea to steal the emblem of an iconic australian club and incorporating the initials of their potential cross town rivals who are also an iconic sporting brand. The bid should be rejected on that basis alone.

If you say so.

They still count in the record books though.

Stop trying to bring down the Broncos and try and tell us how good the Bombers are gonna be 'eh ?

it goes hand in hand, the underperformance of the broncos at the moment and the untapped saturation of the brisbane market opens up the need that people like gyngell have been crying for.

like all startup operations, the goal won't be to conquer rome from day 1. it is to take up the natural market that is there as its foundation and work co-operatively with the broncos to penetrate the market that the broncos clearly can't by themselves at the moment (and for a long time)

And the Broncos would want to be a part of any co-operative with the Bombers because .....??

If the Bombers think that they'll be able to start up a franchise here in Brisbane, and not be successful from the get-go ... then i can assume that you either weren't born, or didn't hear about the Crushers debacle ??
