It's now do-or-die for the Broncos: Lockyer

Darren Lockyer says if the Broncos can’t beat the Roosters tomorrow night, the road to the grand final “will be a mountain too big to climb”.

And the last man to lead Brisbane to a premiership in 2006 also delivered his verdict on what is wrong with struggling young halves Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt.

After losing six of their last eight games, most experts point to Milford and Hunt’s sharp decline in vital attacking statistics as the Broncos’ biggest issue.

But Lockyer believes it is more to do with overall attitude, and he spotted two worrying signs in last week’s shock loss to Penrith involving Milford and Hunt.

Lockyer noted how Milford gave up too easily with his chase on a runaway Waqa Blake after that controversial no knock-on call that led to Penrith’s first try in the 9th minute.

Then in the countdown to halftime Hunt attempted a short goal line drop out when the Broncos were only trailing 12-0.

That landed out on the full and gifted Penrith a penalty shot directly in front of the posts.

“You don’t win premierships doing that,” Lockyer said.

“I just think at the moment they are not prepared to grind the game out.

“They are probably looking for some easy options and it is bringing them undone.

“I just think it is the mentality of the team and obviously the halves are the ones who control the game.’’

Lockyer said he could see parallels to what the Broncos are going through now and what happened to his team in 2006.

After losing five straight games between round 18 and 23 that year, the Broncos recovered to win their last three games of the regular season — and despite dropping their first finals game still charged home to win the grand final.

This year they started the season on fire but have dropped seven of their last 10 to slip to sixth spot on the NRL ladder.

With six rounds of the regular season remaining, Lockyer said it was vital for them to finish in the top four.

“If they don’t get the two points against the Roosters I just think it will be a mountain too big to climb,” he said.

Asked if he thought they could still win the premiership, he added: “Obviously on current form no.

“The key is always getting all your players fit and healthy at the right time.

“But it is very difficult to win it outside of the top four.

“The teams they are playing between now and round 26, they are capable of getting there.

“But you’d have to think this week is a winnable game, even though the Roosters are going better than is suggested on the ladder.

“But if they can’t get this one, gee it puts a lot of pressure on them.”

Our season is already over in my opinion. We had our chance to take the form and run with it after we beat Souffs, but....

And I'm pretty sure this is the worst year for injuries in the clubs history, so that doesn't help.

2007 was worse.

We had Tonie Carroll playing in the halves..

If Milf and Hunt can't learn from Locky and Alf...then wtf?

The parallels to 2006 are uncanny though.

Would like to see more of Lockyer on the training paddock sorting our halves out than talking to the courier or his w%$ker mates at channel 9

I think there is a reason why Hunt and Milford can't learn from Locky.

It's because Locky's playing style doesn't suit Hunt and Milford.

Locky was all about control. That's not Hunt's and Milford's strong point.

Langer was more ad lib, but I don't think he is very good at teaching players. I think Walters was better at that and Hunt and Milford responded to him better.

Lockyer has been out there on the training paddock.

What more do you want him to do?

1989, 2001, 2007, 2010...

The Broncos haven't always been lucky.

Even years like 2009 and 2011 came down to injuries.

When I look at this team, I can't help but think too much too soon.

They're choc full of talent, but with all that talent comes attention and they don't know how to deal with it.

Everytime I think about the game against Penrith, I seem to find something new to be upset about. At this second, I agree with Lockyer, the short restart maybe the biggest blight of the night.

It really sums the Broncos up at the moment. It came off once, so they've been doing it to death. Sooner or later, it isn't going to come off, so you've got to have that commitment to each other if you want to get through.

It's cliche, but the Broncos have to forget about winning tomorrow night. What they need to do is put forward a committed 80 minute performance. No trick shots, or anything spectacular, just go out there, follow a gameplan and stick through it thick or thin.

It may not be enough but it will put them in good stead for the remaining weeks of the competition.

Yeah but look at our forward pack from that 2006 side. It was a monster of a pack. Full of internationals. Then you had the likes of Lockyer, hodges Tate and berrigan. Karmichael hunt as well. Jesus how did we not win more premierships.

Exactly. That entire era will forever stink of the dead taint of the cheating Storm. Brian Waldron essentially made about 6 years worth of football completely meaningless.

The Broncos season...

More than a token session or 2 ...They need some help
How do you know what Lockyer is or isn't doing for the team? Does he need a specific title, like "Backs Coach" or "Halves Specialist Consultant" to be helpful around the club? There is no quick fix here. A simple call out to Walters or Lockyer wont change how they are playing. They have the best coaches and staff available at their disposal. Only the players can change what they are doing. The processes haven't changed, it's the application to the process and attitude that has. If they decide to turn up, this competition is wide open, and we are as good a chance as any other team to come home strong for the last section of the season.

Looks like the team isn't having fun anymore and I only hope that doesn't lead to players hating each other...
